A facultatively anaerobic bacterium, designated strain 1MBB1T, was isolated from basaltic breccia collected from 341 m below the seafloor by seafloor drilling of Rigil Guyot during Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 330. The cells were straight rods, 0.5 μm wide and 1–3 μm long, that occurred singly and in chains. Strain 1MBB1T stained Gram-positive. Catalase and oxidase were produced. The isolate grew optimally at 30 °C and pH 7.5, and could grow with up to 12 % (w/v) NaCl. The DNA G+C content was 40.5 mol%. The major cellular fatty acids were C16: 1ω11c (26.5 %), anteiso-C15: 0 (19.5 %), C16: 0 (18.7 %) and iso-C15: 0 (10.4 %), and the cell-wall diamino acid was meso-diaminopimelic acid. Endospores of strain 1MBB1T oxidized Mn(II) to Mn(IV), and siderophore production by vegetative cells was positive. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene indicated that strain 1MBB1T was a member of the family Bacillaceae, with Bacillus foraminis CV53T and Bacillus novalis LMG 21837T being the closest phylogenetic neighbours (96.5 and 96.2 % similarity, respectively). This is the first novel species described from deep subseafloor basaltic crust. On the basis of our polyphasic analysis, we conclude that strain 1MBB1T represents a novel species of the genus Bacillus, for which we propose the name Bacillus rigiliprofundi sp. nov. The type strain is 1MBB1T ( = NCMA B78T = LMG 28275T).

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, non-sporulating, motile and moderately halophilic bacterium, designated strain H96B60T, was isolated from a saline soil sample of the Qaidam basin, China. The strain was facultatively anaerobic. Major end products formed from glucose fermentation were acetate, ethanol and lactic acid. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The isoprenoid quinone component was menaquinone-6 (MK-6). The predominant cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0, anteiso-C13 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain H96B60T was 36.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on comparative 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain H96B60T represented a novel phyletic lineage within the family Bacillaceae and was related most closely to Halolactibacillus species (96.1–96.4 % similarity). Based on the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data presented, strain H96B60T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Streptohalobacillus salinus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Streptohalobacillus salinus is H96B60T ( = DSM 22440T  = CGMCC 1.7733T).

A novel, Gram-positive, non-motile, endospore-forming and moderately halophilic bacterium, strain GrbiT, was isolated from a traditional Korean fermented seafood. The organism grew optimally in the presence of 10–15 % NaCl, at 37 °C and pH 8.0. The peptidoglycan of the cell wall consisted of meso-diaminopimelic acid, and the predominant menaquinone was MK-7. The major fatty acids of strain GrbiT were iso-C16 : 0 (36.4 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (30.3 %) and iso-C14 : 0 (18.2 %). The polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified glycolipid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 42.5 mol%. Strain GrbiT was most closely related to the type strain Lentibacillus kapialis JCM 12580T, with which it shared 97.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The DNA–DNA hybridization value between strains GrbiT and L. kapialis JCM 12580T was 8 %. Based on phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic data, strain GrbiT should be classified as a novel species within the genus Lentibacillus, for which the name Lentibacillus jeotgali sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GrbiT (=KCTC 13300T=JCM 15795T).

A Gram-stain-positive, spore-forming, rod-shaped, motile, strictly aerobic bacterium, designated CAU 1183T, was isolated from marine sand and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. The bacterium grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 8.5 and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain CAU 1183T formed a distinct lineage within the genus Oceanobacillus and exhibited the highest similarity to Oceanobacillus chungangensis CAU 1051T (97.6 %). The strain contained MK-7 as the predominant isoprenoid quinone and anteiso-C15 : 0 was the major cellular fatty acid. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The polar lipid pattern of strain CAU 1183T consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and unidentified lipids, including two phospholipids, two glycolipids, a phosphoglycolipid and two lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 37.5 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain CAU 1183T should be assigned to a novel species in the genus Oceanobacillus, for which the name Oceanobacillus arenosus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 1183T ( = KCTC 33037T = CECT 8560T).

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming, aerobic bacterium (FJAT-14571T) was isolated from a soil sample in Taiwan. Strain FJAT-14571T grew at 20–40 °C (optimum 35 °C), pH 6–10 (optimum pH 8) and 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain FJAT-14571T was a member of the genus Bacillus and was most closely related to Bacillus oceanisediminis DSM 24771T (96.2 %). DNA–DNA relatedness between strain FJAT-14571T and B. oceanisediminis DSM 24771T was low (32.0 % ± 0.88 %). The diagnostic diamino acid of the peptidoglycan of strain FJAT-14571T was meso-diaminopimelic acid and the predominant menaquinone was MK-7 (96.6 %). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (46.4 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (7.6 %), iso-C17 : 0 (8.2 %) and iso-C16 : 0 (10.0 %) and the DNA G+C content was 40.8 mol%. Phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic properties clearly indicated that strain FJAT-14571T represents a novel species within the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus taiwanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FJAT-14571T ( = DSM 27845T = CGMCC1.1 2698T).

A novel actinobacterium, designated strain C4-31T, was isolated from soil collected from a cave. Cells were aerobic, Gram-reaction-positive, oxidase-negative, catalase-positive and non-motile cocci. Comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the organism occupied a distinct phylogenetic position within the suborder Frankineae, with sequence similarity values of less than 93.2 % to members of this suborder. The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside, an unknown aminophospholipid and an unknown phospholipid. The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω6c and C16 : 0. The G+C content of the DNA was 62.8 mol%. On the basis of morphological and chemotaxonomic data as well as phylogenetic evidence, strain C4-31T ( = KCTC 39556T = DSM 100065T) is considered to represent the type strain of a novel species of a new genus in the suborder Frankineae, for which the name Antricoccus suffuscus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-stain-variable, rod-shaped, non-motile and endospore-forming bacterium, designated strain HZ1T, was isolated from a sample of bank side soil from Hangzhou city, Zhejiang province, PR China. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain HZ1T was closely related to members of the genus Paenibacillus, sharing the highest levels of sequence similarity with Paenibacillus agarexedens DSM 1327T (94.4 %), Paenibacillus sputi KIT00200-70066-1T (94.4 %). Growth occurred at 15–42 °C (optimum 30–37 °C), pH 5.0–9.5 (optimum pH 7.0–8.0) and NaCl concentrations of up to 6.0 % (w/v) were tolerated (optimum 0.5 %). The dominant respiratory quinone was MK-7 and the DNA G+C content was 40.1 mol%. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The major polar lipids of strain HZ1T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and several unknown lipids. The diagnostic diamino acid found in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. Based on its phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics and phylogenetic data, strain HZ1T represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus ripae sp. nov. (type strain HZ1T = CCTCC AB 2014276T = LMG 28639T) is proposed.

The taxonomic position of an actinomycete isolated from deep-sea sediment from the Indian Ocean was determined by using a polyphasic approach. The presence of iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0 as the major cellular fatty acids, ll-diaminopimelic acid as the characteristic diamino acid, and MK-9(H4, H6 and H8) as the major menaquinones supported the affiliation of strain IH32-1T to the genus Streptomyces. Comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain IH32-1T exhibited highest similarities to the type strains of Streptomyces globosus (97.6 %) and Streptomyces toxytricini (97.6 %). However, DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain IH32-1T and the type strains of S. globosus and S. toxytricini were determined as 55.2±4.7 and 38.3±2.5 %, respectively. Based on its chemotaxonomic, phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, strain IH32-1T is considered to represent a novel species in the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces indicus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is IH32-1T ( = DSM 42001T = CGMCC 4.5727T).

A novel, moderately halophilic bacterium belonging to the genus Salinicoccus was isolated from crabs preserved in soy sauce: a traditional Korean fermented seafood. Colonies of strain CrmT were ivory and the cells were non-motile, Gram-positive cocci. The organism was non-sporulating, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. The major fatty acids of strain CrmT were iso-C15 : 0 (22.0 %), anteiso-C15 : 0 (40.6 %) and anteiso-C17 : 0 (12.1 %). The cell wall peptidoglycan contained lysine and glycine, and the major isoprenoid quinone was MK-6. The polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified glycolipid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 47.8 mol%. Strain CrmT was closely related to the type strain of Salinicoccus halodurans, with which it shared 96.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The DNA–DNA hybridization value between strains CrmT and S. halodurans DSM 19336T was 7.6 %. Based on phenotypic, genetic and phylogenetic data, strain CrmT should be classified as a novel species within the genus Salinicoccus, for which the name Salinicoccus carnicancri sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CrmT (=KCTC 13301T =JCM 15796T).

A novel halophilic bacterium, designated strain MSS4T, was isolated from the solar salterns of Mesolongi, Greece. The micro-organism, a motile, Gram-stain-positive, aerobic rod, proliferated at salinities of 1.0–4.0 M NaCl, with optimal growth at 2.5 M NaCl. Endospores were not observed. Strain MSS4T showed optimal growth at 37 °C and pH 8.0. The G+C content of its DNA was 47.2 mol%. The polar lipid pattern of strain MSS4T consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidic acid and phosphatidylethanolamine. It possessed anteiso-C15 : 0, C18 : 0, C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0 as the major fatty acids (altogether representing 84.7 % of the total). The predominant isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the new isolate has 96.1 % similarity to Bacillus qingdaonensis CM1T and Bacillus aidingensis 17-5T, 95.5 % to Bacillus salarius BH169T and lower similarity to other Bacillus species. These results justify the assignment of strain MSS4T to a novel species within the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus halochares sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MSS4T (=LMG 24571T =DSM 21373T).

Two novel filamentous bacteria, strains SCSIO 11157T and SCSIO 11154T, were isolated from a deep-sea sediment sample. Strain SCSIO 11157T grew optimally at 55–60 °C, while strain SCSIO 11154T grew optimally at 40 °C. Both strains produced aerial and substrate mycelia. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences of strains SCSIO 11157T and SCSIO 11154T showed that the isolates were affiliated to the family Thermoactinomycetaceae. The two isolates contained ll-diaminopimelic acid as the cell-wall diamino acid, and did not have diagnostic sugars. The major polar lipids of strain SCSIO 11157T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol, and the major polar lipids of SCSIO 11154T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine. The predominant menaquinone of both strains was MK-7. The major cellular fatty acids of strain SCSIO 11157T were iso-C15 : 0, C18 : 1ω9c and iso-C17 : 0, and strain SCSIO 11154T contained iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 as major fatty acids. The DNA G+C contents of strains SCSIO 11157T and SCSIO 11154T were 54.2 and 51.8 mol %, respectively. On the basis of its phenotypic and phylogenetic properties, strain SCSIO 11157T represents a novel species in the new genus, for which we propose the name Marinithermofilum abyssi gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain of Marinithermofilum abyssi is SCSIO 11157T ( = CGMCC 1.15179T = NBRC 109939T). Strain SCSIO 11154T represents a novel species of the genus Desmospora, for which we propose the name Desmospora profundinema sp. nov. The type strain is SCSIO 11154T ( = DSM 45903T = NBRC 109626T).
