A Gram-stain-positive, spore-forming, rod-shaped, motile, strictly aerobic bacterium, designated CAU 1183T, was isolated from marine sand and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. The bacterium grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 8.5 and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain CAU 1183T formed a distinct lineage within the genus Oceanobacillus and exhibited the highest similarity to Oceanobacillus chungangensis CAU 1051T (97.6 %). The strain contained MK-7 as the predominant isoprenoid quinone and anteiso-C15 : 0 was the major cellular fatty acid. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The polar lipid pattern of strain CAU 1183T consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and unidentified lipids, including two phospholipids, two glycolipids, a phosphoglycolipid and two lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 37.5 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain CAU 1183T should be assigned to a novel species in the genus Oceanobacillus, for which the name Oceanobacillus arenosus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 1183T ( = KCTC 33037T = CECT 8560T).

A yellow-pigmented, motile, Gram-stain-negative, moderately halophilic and strictly aerobic bacterium, designated BA42AL-1T, was isolated from water of a saltern of Santa Pola, Alicante, Spain. Strain BA42AL-1T grew in media containing 5–20 % (w/v) salts (optimum 7.5 % salts). It grew between pH 6.0 and 9.0 (optimally at pH 7.5) and at 15–45 °C (optimally at 37 °C). Phylogenetic analysis based on the comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain BA42AL-1T is a member of the genus Aquisalimonas . The closest relatives to this strain were Aquisalimonas halophila YIM 95345T and Aquisalimonas asiatica CG12T with sequence similarities of 99.4 % and 97.0 %, respectively. DNA–DNA hybridization between the novel isolate and Aquisalimonas halophila YIM 95345T revealed a relatedness of 54 %. The major fatty acids of strain BA42AL-1T were C18 : 1ω6c/C18 : 1ω7c, C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c and C16 : 0, and lower contents of C12 : 0 and C18 : 0. The polar lipid pattern of strain BA42AL-1T consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, two glycolipids, a lipid and four unknown phospholipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of this strain was 65.0 mol%. Based on the DNA–DNA hybridization, phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data presented in this study, strain BA42AL-1T is proposed as a novel species of the genus Aquisalimonas , for which the name Aquisalimonas lutea sp. nov. is suggested. The type strain is BA42AL-1T ( = CCM 8472T = CECT 8326T = LMG 27614T).

A moderately halophilic bacterium, strain BH169T, capable of growing at salinities of 3–20 % (w/v) NaCl was isolated from a saline lake in China. Strain BH169T was strictly aerobic, short-rod-shaped and non-motile (non-flagellated). Its major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The genomic DNA G+C content was about 43 mol% and the predominant quinone was MK-7. The cell-wall peptidoglycan was of the A1γ type, containing meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolate formed a distinct phylogenetic line within the spore-forming rods of the genus Bacillus. The levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the type strains of Bacillus species were below 93 %. On the basis of phenotypic and molecular properties, strain BH169T (=KCTC 3912T=DSM 16461T) represents the type strain of a novel species within the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus salarius sp. nov. is proposed.

A novel Gram-positive, slightly halophilic bacterium, designated strain B48T, was isolated from soil around the hypersaline lake Aran-Bidgol in Iran and characterized taxonomically using a polyphasic approach. Cells of strain B48T were non-motile rods and produced ellipsoidal endospores at a central or subterminal position in swollen sporangia. Strain B48T was a strictly aerobic bacterium, catalase- and oxidase-positive. The strain was able to grow at NaCl concentrations of 0.5–10.0 % (w/v), with optimum growth occurring at 2.5 % (w/v) NaCl. The optimum temperature and pH for growth were 35 °C and pH 7.5–8.0, respectively. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain B48T was shown to belong to the genus Bacillus within the phylum Firmicutes and showed the closest phylogenetic similarity to the species Bacillus foraminis CV53T (97.4 %) and Bacillus purgationiresistens DS22T (96.9 %). The DNA G+C content of this new isolate was 40.1 mol%. The major cellular fatty acids of strain B48T were iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0, and its polar lipid pattern consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, an aminophospholipid and two unknown phospholipids. The only quinone present was menaquinone 7 (MK-7). The peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. All these features confirm the placement of isolate B48T within the genus Bacillus . DNA–DNA hybridization experiments revealed a low level of relatedness between strain B48T and Bacillus foraminis IBRC-M 10625T (8.1 %). On the basis of polyphasic evidence from this study, a new species of the genus Bacillus , Bacillus persicus sp. nov., is proposed, with strain B48T ( = IBRC-M 10115T = DSM 25386T = CECT 8001T) as the type strain.

A Gram reaction-positive, moderately halophilic bacterium, designated H57B72T, was isolated from subsurface saline soil of Qaidam basin in the Qinghai province, China. Cells were rod-shaped, strictly aerobic, spore-forming and motile. The isolate grew optimally at 9 % (w/v) NaCl, pH 7.5 and 30 °C. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of strain H57B72T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (59.97 %) and anteiso-C17 : 0 (17.14 %). Phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and a glycolipid were found to be the predominant polar lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain H57B72T was 37.1 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain H57B72T was a member of the genus Virgibacillus and was most closely related to Virgibacillus salinus DSM 21756T (98.3 % gene sequence similarity). The level of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain H57B72T and V. salinus DSM 21756T was 8.5 %. Based on the phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic data presented, strain H57B72T represents a novel species, for which the name Virgibacillus subterraneus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is H57B72T (=DSM 22441T =CGMCC 1.7734T).

A Gram-staining-positive, moderately halophilic bacterium, designated strain BH097T, was isolated from solar saltern soil of Bigeum Island in south-west Korea. Cells were motile rods, producing spherical endospores at a terminal position in swollen sporangia. Strain BH097T was strictly aerobic, grew at pH 5.5–9.5 (optimum, pH 8.0), at 10–52 °C (optimum, 37 °C) and at salinities of 1–22 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 7 % NaCl). On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain BH097T was shown to belong to the genus Gracilibacillus within the phylum Firmicutes , and showed closest sequence similarity to Gracilibacillus saliphilus DSM 19802T (95.8 %), Gracilibacillus thailandensis TP2-8T (95.6 %), Gracilibacillus boraciitolerans DSM 17256T (95.5 %), ‘Gracilibacillus quinghaiensis’ DSM 17858 (95.4 %) and Gracilibacillus halophilus DSM 17856T (95.2 %). The DNA G+C content of this novel isolate was 37.9 mol%. The major cellular fatty acids of strain BH097T were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0, and its polar lipid pattern consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol two unknown phospholipids and a glycolipid. The isoprenoid quinone was MK-7, and the peptidoglycan type was A1γ, with meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. On the basis of polyphasic evidence from this study, strain BH097T represents a novel species of the genus Gracilibacillus for which the name Gracilibacillus bigeumensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BH097T ( = KCTC 13130T = DSM 19028T).

A Gram-stain-negative, moderately halophilic, strictly aerobic bacterium, designated YIM 95161T, was isolated from brine of a salt well in Yunnan province, China, and subjected to a taxonomic study using a polyphasic approach. Cells of strain YIM 95161T were short rods, approximately 0.9–1.4 µm long and 0.4–0.6 µm wide. Strain YIM 95161T grew at 15–40 °C (optimum, 25–30 °C), 6–29 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 14–19 %) and at pH 5.0–8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0). The predominant isoprenoid quinone was Q-8. The major fatty acids (>10 %) were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω6c and/or C18 : 1ω7c) and C14 : 0. The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, one unknown phosphoglycolipid and two unknown lipids. The DNA G+C content was 69.5 %. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain YIM 95161T was a member of the genus Salinisphaera and exhibited sequence similarities of 96.7 %, 95.6 % and 95.4 % to Salinisphaera shabanensis E1L3AT, Salinisphaera dokdonensis CL-ES53T and Salinisphaera hydrothermalis EPR70T, respectively. On the basis of phylogenetic, physiological and chemotaxonomic analysis, strain YIM 95161T represents a novel species of the genus Salinisphaera , for which the name Salinisphaera halophila sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIM 95161T ( = CCTCC AB 2011132T = JCM 17431T).

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, non-sporulating, motile and moderately halophilic bacterium, designated strain H96B60T, was isolated from a saline soil sample of the Qaidam basin, China. The strain was facultatively anaerobic. Major end products formed from glucose fermentation were acetate, ethanol and lactic acid. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The isoprenoid quinone component was menaquinone-6 (MK-6). The predominant cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0, anteiso-C13 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain H96B60T was 36.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on comparative 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain H96B60T represented a novel phyletic lineage within the family Bacillaceae and was related most closely to Halolactibacillus species (96.1–96.4 % similarity). Based on the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data presented, strain H96B60T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Streptohalobacillus salinus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Streptohalobacillus salinus is H96B60T ( = DSM 22440T  = CGMCC 1.7733T).

A novel Gram-stain-negative, slightly halophilic bacterium, designated strain GASx41T, was isolated from soil of the coastal–marine wetland Gomishan in Iran. Cells of strain GASx41T were curved, ring-like or horseshoe-shaped rods and non-motile. Strain GASx41T was strictly aerobic, and catalase- and oxidase-positive. The strain was able to grow at NaCl concentrations of 1–10 % (w/v), with optimum growth occurring at 2.5–3 % (w/v) NaCl. The optimum temperature and pH for growth were 25–30 °C and pH 7.5–8.0. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain GASx41T was shown to belong to the genus Cyclobacterium within the phylum Bacteroidetes and showed closest phylogenetic similarity to ‘Cyclobacterium jeungdonense’ HMD3055 (98.0 %). The DNA G+C content of strain GASx41T was 48.1 mol%. The major cellular fatty acids of strain GASx41T were iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 4 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c), anteiso-C15 : 0 2-OH, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, and its polar lipid pattern consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine and 12 unknown lipids. The only quinone present was menaquinone 7 (MK-7). All these features confirmed the placement of isolate GASx41T within the genus Cyclobacterium . On the basis of evidence from this study, a novel species of the genus Cyclobacterium , Cyclobacterium halophilum sp. nov., is proposed, with strain GASx41T ( = IBRC-M 10761T = CECT 8341T) as the type strain.

A novel Gram-staining-positive, rod-shaped, motile, strictly aerobic, endospore-forming bacterium, designated WCC 4585T, was isolated from a pharmaceutical production line. The organism grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 8 and in the presence of 0.5 % (w/v) NaCl. Oval endospores were formed subterminally and terminally in swollen sporangia. The cell-wall diamino acid was meso-diaminopimelic acid (type A1γ) and the genomic DNA G+C content was 38.7 mol%. The major menaquinone was MK-7. The cellular fatty acid profile contained major amounts of iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0, and the cellular phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and aminophospholipid. The isolate was most closely related to Bacillus oceanisediminis H2T, Bacillus infantis SMC 4352-1T, Bacillus firmus NCIMB 9366T, Bacillus circulans ATCC 4513T and Bacillus horneckiae DSM 23495T with which it shared less than 98.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain WCC 4585T and five type strains of related species were ≤27 % and sequence similarity values based on groEL sequences were ≤88.7 %. On the basis of the characteristics presented, strain WCC 4585T is proposed to represent a novel species, Bacillus gottheilii sp. nov. The type strain is WCC 4585T( = DSM 23668T = CCUG 59876T = LMG 25856T).

A Gram-positive, halophilic bacterium, strain CAU 9536T, was isolated from a tidal flat sediment in the Yellow Sea, Republic of Korea. Strain CAU 9536T grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 9.0 and in the presence of 13.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain CAU 9536T belonged to the genus Serinicoccus, and showed sequence similarity levels of 99.0 % to Serinicoccus profundi MCCC 1A05965T and 98.0 % to Serinicoccus marinus JC1078T. DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain CAU 9536T and the above two type strains were below 45.0 %. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of strain CAU 9536T was based on meso-diaminopimelic acid, in contrast to those of S. profundi and S. marinus. The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylinositol. Whole-cell hydrolysates contained mainly glucose and ribose. The major isoprenoid quinone was menaquinone MK-8 (H4), and the predominant cellular fatty acid was iso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C content of strain CAU 9536T was 73.5 mol%. Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic data, strain CAU 9536T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Serinicoccus, for which the name Serinicoccus chungangensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 9536T ( = KCTC 19774T = CCUG 59777T).
