An aerobic, yellow-pigmented, Gram-staining-negative bacterium, designated strain H7T, was isolated from sediment of Gazwa stream in Jinju city, South Korea. Cells of strain H7T were non-motile, straight rods that produced flexirubin pigments and showed catalase- and oxidase activities. Strain H7T contained iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) as the main fatty acids and menaquinone-6 (MK-6) as the major isoprenoid quinone. The DNA G+C content of strain H7T was 37.2 mol%. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain H7T formed a distinct phyletic line within the genus Flavobacterium. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, the novel strain was most closely related to Flavobacterium limicola ST-82T and Flavobacterium resistens BD-b365T with 97.2 % and 97.0 % gene sequence similarities, respectively. The DNA–DNA relatedness of the novel strain with these species was only 18 % and 14 %, respectively. On the basis of phenotypic data and molecular properties, strain H7T represents a novel species within the genus Flavobacterium, for which the name Flavobacterium fluvii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is H7T (=KACC 12818T=DSM 19978T).

A bacterial strain, SPC26T, was isolated from a sediment sample of the Southern Ocean off Antarctica. The strain was Gram-staining- and catalase-positive and contained lysine and alanine in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (54.92 %), iso-C15 : 0 (11.47 %), anteiso-C17 : 0 (6.48 %) and anteiso-C15 : 1 (6.38 %) and the major menaquinones were MK-8, MK-9 and MK-10. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and diphosphatidylglycerol. The G+C content was 68±0.5 mol%. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, the nearest phylogenetic neighbours of strain SPC26T were identified as Arthrobacter gangotriensis Lz1yT (98.8 %), A. sulfureus DSM 20167T (98.6 %), A. psychrophenolicus DSM 15454T (97.9 %) and A. kerguelensis KGN15T (97.5). With these strains, strain SPC26T exhibited DNA–DNA relatedness values of 36, 21, 12 and 10 %, respectively. Therefore, on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons, phylogenetic analysis, phenotypic characteristics and DNA–DNA relatedness, it is proposed that strain SPC26T represents a novel species of Arthrobacter, for which the name Arthrobacter antarcticus sp. nov. is proposed, with strain SPC26T (=LMG 24542T =NCCB 100228T) as the type strain.

Strain B538T is a Gram-positive, motile, rod-shaped bacterium, which was isolated from Xinjiang province in China. This organism grew optimally at 30–35 °C and pH 8.0–8.5. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain B538T belonged to the genus Paenibacillus and chemotaxonomic data (DNA G+C content, 47.0 mol%; major isoprenoid quinone, MK-7; cell wall type, A1γ meso-diaminopimelic acid; major fatty acids, anteiso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0) supported affiliation of the isolate with the genus Paenibacillus. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses showed that the isolate was most closely related to Paenibacillus glycanilyticus DS-1T, with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 98.1 %; sequence similarities to other members of the genus Paenibacillus used in the phylogenetic tree were less than 96.5 %. The DNA–DNA relatedness between strain B538T and P. glycanilyticus DS-1T was about 8.0 %. On the basis of physiological and molecular properties, strain B538T (=KCTC 3952T=DSM 16970T) is proposed as the type strain of a novel species within the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus xinjiangensis sp. nov. is proposed.

A moderately halophilic bacterium, strain YIM 70202T, was isolated from a desert soil sample collected from Egypt and was subjected to a taxonomic investigation. In a phylogenetic dendrogram based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain YIM 70202T was affiliated to the Salinicoccus clade, showing 94.5–96.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the recognized species of the genus Salinicoccus, in which Salinicoccus roseus CCM 3516T was the nearest neighbour. The DNA–DNA relatedness value of the novel isolate with S. roseus CCM 3516T was 12.7 %. The novel isolate grew at temperatures between 4 and 45 °C and at pH values ranging from 7.0 to 11.0, with an optimum of 30 °C and pH 8.0–9.0, respectively. Strain YIM 70202T grew optimally in the presence of 10 % NaCl (w/v) and growth was observed at NaCl concentrations in the range 1–25 % (w/v). Chemotaxonomic data revealed that strain YIM 70202T contained MK-6 as the predominant respiratory quinone, possessed l-Lys–Gly5 as the cell-wall peptidoglycan, had phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and an unknown glycolipid as the polar lipids and contained i-C15 : 0 and ai-C15 : 0 as the predominant fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 49.7 mol%. The biochemical and chemotaxonomic properties demonstrate that strain YIM 70202T represents a novel species of the genus Salinicoccus. The name Salinicoccus luteus sp. nov. is proposed with strain YIM 70202T (=CGMCC 1.6511T=KCTC 3941T) as the type strain.

Four Gram-stain-negative, catalase- and oxidase-positive, rod-shaped and motile strains (Y26, Y57T, ZJ14WT and RP18W) were isolated from mariculture fishponds in PR China. Comparisons based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains Y26 and Y57T share 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities in the range of 95.1−98.5 % with species of the genus Bowmanella , and strains ZJ14WT and RP18W share 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities in the range of 96.7 −98.8 % with species of the genus Amphritea , respectively. The genome sizes of strains Y26, Y57T, ZJ14WT and RP18W were about 4.85, 5.40, 4.70 and 4.70 Mbp with 49.5, 51.7, 51.2 and 51.3 mol% G+C content, respectively. The calculated pairwise OrthoANIu values among strains Y26, Y57T and species of the genus Bowmanella were in the range of 72.6−83.1 %, but the value between strains Y26 and Y57T was 96.2 %. The pairwise OrthoANIu values among strains ZJ14WT, RP18W and other species of the genus Amphritea were all less than 93.9 %, but the value between strains ZJ14WT and RP18W was 99.3 %. Q-8 was the major respiratory quinone of strains Y26, Y57T, ZJ14WT and RP18W, and the major fatty acids of these strains were all C16 : 1 ω7c, C16 : 0 and C18 : 1 ω7c. The predominant polar lipids of strains Y26 and Y57T included phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol, but strains ZJ14WT and RP18W only contained phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. Combining phenotypic, biochemical and genotypic characteristics, strains Y26 and Y57T should belong to the same species and represent a novel member of the genus Bowmanella , and strains ZJ14WT and RP18W should belong to the same species and represent a novel member of the genus Amphritea , for which the names Bowmanella yangjiangensis sp. nov. (type strain Y57T=GDMCC 1.2180T=KCTC 82439T) and Amphritea pacifica sp. nov. (type strain ZJ14WT=GDMCC 1.2203T=KCTC 82438T) are proposed.

Two Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacteria, isolated from metal working fluids were investigated to determine their taxonomic positions. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence phylogeny, both strains (MPA 1113T and MPA 1105T) formed a distinct cluster with 97.7 % sequence similarity between them, which was in the vicinity of members of the genera Methylobacterium , Camelimonas , Chelatococcus , Bosea , Salinarimonas and Microvirga to which they showed low sequence similarities (below 94 %). The predominant compounds in the polyamine pattern and in the quinone system of the two strains were spermidine and ubiquinone Q-10, respectively. The polar lipid profiles were composed of the major compounds: phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, major or moderate amounts of diphosphatidylglycerol, two unidentified glycolipids and three unidentified aminolipids. Several minor lipids were also detected. The major fatty acids were either C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c or C18 : 1ω7c. The results of fatty acid analysis and physiological and biochemical tests allowed both, the genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of the isolates from each other, while the chemotaxonomic traits allowed them to be differentiated from the most closely related genera. In summary, low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities and marked differences in polar lipid profiles, as well as in polyamine patterns, is suggestive of a novel genus for which the name Pseudochelatococcus gen. nov. is proposed. MPA 1113T ( = CCM 8528T = LMG 28286T = CIP 110802T) and MPA 1105T ( = CCM 8527T = LMG 28285T) are proposed to be the type strains representing two novel species within the novel genus, Pseudochelatococcus gen. nov., for which the names Pseudochelatococcus lubricantis sp. nov. and Pseudochelatococcus contaminans sp. nov. are suggested, respectively.

A Gram-negative, non-motile bacterium, designated MJ17T, was isolated from sludge at the Daejeon sewage disposal plant in South Korea. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain MJ17T belonged to the genus Paracoccus in the family Rhodobacteraceae of the class Alphaproteobacteria. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between strain MJ17T and type strains of species of the genus Paracoccus were 94.1–97.4 %. The highest similarities were between strain MJ17T and Paracoccus homiensis DD-R11T, Paracoccus zeaxanthinifaciens ATCC 21588T and Paracoccus alcaliphilus JCM 7364T (97.4, 97.2 and 96.3 %, respectively). Strain MJ17T exhibited <22 % DNA–DNA relatedness with P. homiensis KACC 11518T and P. zeaxanthinifaciens JCM 21774T. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 58.7 mol%. Strain MJ17T contained ubiquinone Q-10. The major fatty acids were C18 : 0 (11.3 %), C16 : 0 (10.2 %) and summed feature 7 (containing one or more of C18 : 1ω7c, C18 : 1ω9c and C18 : 1ω12t; 54.3 %). Poly-β-hydroxybutyrate granules are formed. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain MJ17T should be classified in a novel species of the genus Paracoccus, for which the name Paracoccus caeni sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MJ17T ( = KCTC 22480T  = JCM 16385T  = KEMB 9004-001T).

Limit-dilution procedures were used to isolate seven, helically coiled bacterial strains from faeces of swine that constituted two unidentified taxa. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed highest similarity values with species of the genus Treponema indicating that the isolates are members of this genus. Strain 7CPL208T, as well as five further isolates, and 14V28T displayed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with Treponema pectinovorum ATCC 33768T (92·3 %) and Treponema parvum OMZ 833T (89·9 %), respectively. Polar lipid profiles distinguished 7CPL208T and 14V28T from each other as well as from related species. Based on their phenotypic and genotypic distinctiveness, strains 7CPL208T and 14V28T are suggested to represent two novel species of the genus Treponema, for which the names Treponema berlinense sp. nov. and Treponema porcinum sp. nov. are proposed. The type strain for Treponema berlinense is 7CPL208T (=ATCC BAA-909T=CIP 108244T=JCM 12341T) and for Treponema porcinum 14V28T (=ATCC BAA-908T=CIP 108245T=JCM 12342T).

A Gram-reaction-negative, rod-shaped, motile, neutrophilic bacterium, designated strain BH3T, was isolated from wastewater of a sequential batch reactor treating wastewater taken from a leather plant. The isolate grew in 0–8 % (w/v) NaCl, at pH 6–9 and at 4–45 °C. Chemotaxonomic analysis showed that strain BH3T had characteristics typical of members of the genus Sphingomonas, such as the presence of sphingolipids, Q-10 and 2-hydroxymyristic acid and the absence of 3-hydroxy fatty acids. The presence of C18 : 1ω7c (39.2 %) and C16 : 0 (11.2 %) as major fatty acids, C14 : 0 2-OH (20.6 %) as the major 2-hydroxy fatty acid and homospermidine as the major polyamine indicated that strain BH3T belonged to the genus Sphingomonas sensu stricto. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain BH3T was 65.6 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between the isolate and closely related members of the genus Sphingomonas sensu stricto ranged from 92.6 to 97.3 %, the highest sequence similarities being to Sphingomonas melonis DSM 14444T (97.3 %) and Sphingomonas aquatilis DSM 15581T (97.3 %). Based on its phenotypic characteristics and the results of DNA–DNA hybridization studies and 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons, strain BH3T represents a novel species of the genus Sphingomonas sensu stricto, for which the name Sphingomonas rubra sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BH3T ( = CGMCC 1.9113T  = JCM 16230T).

A Gram-staining-negative, motile, agarolytic bacterium, designated M-M1T, was isolated from marine sand obtained from Geoje Island, South Sea, Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Strain M-M1T grew optimally at pH 7.0–8.0, at 30 °C and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. It did not grow in the presence of >7 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain M-M1T fell within the clade comprising members of the genus Thalassomonas, clustering with Thalassomonas agarivorans TMA1T, Thalassomonas loyana CBMAI 722T and Thalassomonas ganghwensis JC2041T, with which it exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 96.4, 96.0 and 94.9 % respectively. Strain M-M1T exhibited 94.7–95.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the other species of the genus Thalassomonas. Strain M-M1T contained Q-8 as the predominant ubiquinone and C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH, C16 : 0 and C18 : 1ω7c as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 44.2 mol%. Strain M-M1T could be differentiated from phylogenetically related species of the genus Thalassomonas by differences in some phenotypic properties. On the basis of the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain M-M1T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Thalassomonas, for which the name Thalassomonas agariperforans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M-M1T ( = KCTC 23343T  = CCUG 60020T).

An orange-pigmented, Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, filament-forming, rod-shaped bacterium (BUZ 3T) was isolated from a coastal mud sample from the North Sea (Fedderwardersiel, Germany) and characterized taxonomically using a polyphasic approach. According to 16S rRNA gene sequence data, it belonged to the family Cytophagaceae, exhibiting low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (<90 %) with members of the genera Spirosoma, Rudanella and Fibrella. The DNA G+C content was 52.0 mol%. The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH), C16 : 1ω5c and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The major polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine and several aminolipids. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, it is proposed that strain BUZ 3T represents a novel genus and species, for which the name Fibrisoma limi gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BUZ 3T ( = DSM 22564T  = CCUG 58137T).
