A non-motile, rod-shaped and aerobic marine bacterium, designated strain KYW314T, was isolated from seawater collected from the South Sea, Republic of Korea. Cells were Gram-negative, catalase- and oxidase-positive and had proteolytic activity. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (17.2 %), C16 : 0 (11.1 %), iso-C17 : 0 (10.5 %) and C18 : 1 ω7c (10.0 %). The DNA G+C content was 56.4 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain KYW314T formed a lineage within the genus Pseudidiomarina (95.4–97.3 % sequence similarity) and a distinct branch within the clade containing Pseudidiomarina taiwanensis PIT1T and Pseudidiomarina sediminum c121T. Phenotypic characteristics could distinguish strain KYW314T from members of the genus Pseudidiomarina. On the basis of the data presented, strain KYW314T represents a novel species, for which the name Pseudidiomarina aestuarii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KYW314T (=KCTC 22740T =JCM 16344T).

A non-motile, rod-shaped, light-yellow-pigmented bacterium, designated strain WPCB159T, was isolated from freshwater samples collected from the Woopo wetland in Korea. The cells were Gram-negative, aerobic and catalase- and oxidase-positive. The major fatty acids were C16 : 1 ω7c (34.8 %), iso-C15 : 0 (24.2 %) and C16 : 0 (9.4 %). The DNA G+C content was 44 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain WPCB159T forms a lineage within the genus Dyadobacter (family ‘Flexibacteraceae’) and is closely related to Dyadobacter hamtensis HHS 11T (97.8 % sequence similarity) and to other members of the genus Dyadobacter (95.2–96.8 % sequence similarity). The phenotypic characteristics and DNA–DNA hybridization relatedness data indicate that strain WPCB159T should be distinguished from D. hamtensis HHS 11T. On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain WPCB159T represents a novel species of the genus Dyadobacter, for which the name Dyadobacter koreensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WPCB159T (=KCTC 12537T=NBRC 101116T).

Two non-motile, orange- or yellow-pigmented bacteria, designated strains KYW48T and KYW147T, were isolated from seawater collected from the South Sea, Republic of Korea. Cells of both strains were Gram-reaction-negative, aerobic and catalase- and oxidase-positive. The major fatty acids of strain KYW48T were C18 : 1ω7c (35.3 %), summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c) (22.7 %), C17 : 1ω6c (19.8 %), C14 : 0 2-OH (7.4 %) and C16 : 0 (5.9 %), and those of strain KYW147T were C18 : 1ω7c (36.0 %), summed feature 3 (18.3 %), C16 : 0 (14.7 %), 11-methyl C18 : 1ω7c (10.7 %), C16 : 0 2-OH (9.1 %) and C18 : 1ω9c (8.0 %). The predominant isoprenoid quinone of both strains was ubiquinone 10 (Q-10). The DNA G+C contents of strains KYW48T and KYW147T were 63.8 and 67.2 mol%, respectively. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains KYW48T and KYW147T were grouped with the members of the family Erythrobacteraceae and formed a distinct clade with the members of the genus Altererythrobacter (<95.7 % sequence similarity). On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, the novel species Altererythrobacter namhicola sp. nov. (type strain KYW48T  = KCTC 22736T  = JCM 16345T) and Altererythrobacter aestuarii sp. nov. (type strain KYW147T  = KCTC 22735T  = JCM 16339T) are proposed.

A Gram-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated CW-E 2T, was isolated from a polluted soil sample collected from Jiangsu Province, China. A taxonomic study of the isolate, including phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and phenotypic characteristics, was carried out. The predominant menaquinone was MK-6 and the major fatty acids were i-C15 : 0, i-C17 : 0 3-OH, i-C17 : 1 ω9c and summed feature 4. The G+C content of the DNA was 37.2 mol%. Based on phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, strain CW-E 2T represents a novel species of the genus Chryseobacterium for which the name Chryseobacterium flavum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CW-E 2T (=KCTC 12877T=CCTCC AB 206147T).

A rod-shaped, yellow and strictly aerobic marine bacterium, designated KYW382T, was isolated from seawater collected from the South Sea, Republic of Korea. Cells were Gram-negative and catalase- and oxidase-positive. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH and anteiso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 32.4 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain KYW382T constituted an evolutionary lineage within the radiation enclosing the members of the genus Gaetbulibacter. The closest neighbour was Gaetbulibacter saemankumensis SMK-12T (96.1 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). A number of phenotypic characteristics distinguished strain KYW382T from the described members of the genus Gaetbulibacter. On the basis of the data presented in this study, strain KYW382T represents a novel species, for which the name Gaetbulibacter aestuarii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KYW382T ( = KCTC 23303T  = JCM 17455T). An emended description of the genus Gaetbulibacter is also given.

A marine bacterial strain, FR1064T, was isolated from a surface seawater sample collected off Jeju Island, South Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolate belonged to the Gammaproteobacteria and was related to the genus Glaciecola with 97.6 % sequence similarity to Glaciecola pallidula, its nearest phylogenetic neighbour. DNA–DNA relatedness between strain FR1064T and G. pallidula ACAM 615T was 55 %. Cells of the novel isolate were Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, motile and halophilic, with an optimum sea salts concentration of 4–7 %. The major fatty acids were straight-chain saturated (C16 : 0), summed feature 3 and monounsaturated fatty acid C18 : 1. The DNA G+C content was 44 mol%. Several phenotypic characteristics differentiated the novel isolate from all previously described members of the genus Glaciecola. The polyphasic data obtained in this study clearly demonstrate that strain FR1064T represents a novel species of the genus Glaciecola. The name Glaciecola nitratireducens sp. nov. is therefore proposed, with strain FR1064T (=KCTC 12276T=JCM 12485T) as the type strain.

The DNA G+C content was 47 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain WPCB133T forms an independent lineage within the genus Mucilaginibacter. Strain WPCB133T was distantly related to Mucilaginibacter kameinonensis SCKT (94.7 % sequence similarity), Mucilaginibacter paludis TPT56T (94.5 %) and Mucilaginibacter gracilis TPT18T (94.4 %). Phenotypic characteristics distinguished strain WPCB133T from members of the genus Mucilaginibacter. On the basis of evidence presented in this study, strain WPCB133T represents a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter, for which the name Mucilaginibacter rigui sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WPCB133T (=KCTC 12534T =NBRC 101115T). An emended description of the genus Mucilaginibacter is also proposed.

A non-motile and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain WM78T, was isolated from freshwater collected from the Woopo wetland (Republic of Korea). Cells were Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 :0, anteiso-C15 :0, C16 :1ω7c and/or C16 :1ω6c and iso-C17 :1 I and/or anteiso-C17 :1 B. The strain contained MK-7 as the major isoprenoid quinone, phosphatidylethanolamine as the major polar lipid and sym-homospermidine as the major polyamine. The genomic DNA G+C content was 62 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain WM78T forms evolutionary lineage within the radiation comprising members of the genus Hymenobacter with Hymenobacter gelipurpurascens Txg1T (97.7 % sequence similarity) as its nearest neighbour. A number of phenotypic characteristics distinguished strain WM78T from related members of the genus Hymenobacter. The evidence presented in this study support the designation of strain WM78T as a representative of a novel species in the genus Hymenobacter for which the name Hymenbactor wooponensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is WM78T ( = KCTC 32528T = JCM 19491T).

A Gram-positive, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped, spore-forming bacterium, designated Gsoil 139T, was isolated from soil from a ginseng field in Pocheon Province, South Korea, and was characterized using a polyphasic approach. Comparative analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain Gsoil 139T belongs to the family Paenibacillaceae. The greatest sequence similarity was found with respect to the type strains of Paenibacillus hodogayensis (95.6 %) and Paenibacillus koleovorans (93.8 %). The strain showed less than 93.8 % sequence similarity with respect to other species of the genus Paenibacillus. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 48.1 mol%. In addition, the presence of MK-7 as the major menaquinone and C15 : 0 anteiso as a major fatty acid (27.9 %) justifies its affiliation to the genus Paenibacillus. On the basis of its phenotypic characteristics and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain Gsoil 139T represents a novel species within the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus ginsengarvi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Gsoil 139T (=KCTC 13059T =DSM 18677T).

A Gram-negative-staining, non-motile, non-spore-forming and strictly aerobic bacterial strain, SC35T, was isolated from tidal flat sediment collected from the South Sea, Korea, and subjected to a taxonomic study using a polyphasic approach. The organism grew optimally at 20–30 °C and with 1–2 % (w/v) NaCl. Strain SC35T contained ubiquinone-8 as the predominant respiratory lipoquinone and C18 : 1 ω9c as the major fatty acid. The DNA G+C content was 48.5 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain SC35T formed a lineage within the genus Psychrobacter (94.3–96.5 % sequence similarity), forming a distinct branch in a clade also containing Psychrobacter pacificensis NIBH P2K6T and Psychrobacter celer SW-238T. On the basis of phenotypic and phylogenetic data, strain SC35T (=KCTC 22503T=JCM 16343T) was placed in the genus Psychrobacter as the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Psychrobacter aestuarii sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, non-spore-forming bacterium, motile by means of single polar flagellum and rod-shaped, designated strain GR12-1T, was isolated from soil of a ginseng field in Yeongju region, Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that this strain is related to members of the genus Pseudoxanthomonas, showing sequence similarity values ranged from 92.3 to 96.2 %. This organism grew at 5–33 °C, with optimum growth at 28 °C. Strain GR12-1T grew optimally in the presence of 0–2 % NaCl. The whole-cell fatty acid profile included iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 1 ω9c, iso-C16 : 0, iso-C11 : 0 3-OH and iso-C17 : 0 as major components. The only isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone 8 (Q-8). The DNA G+C content was 63.4 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, genetic and phylogenetic data, strain GR12-1T should be classified as a member of a novel species of the genus Pseudoxanthomonas, for which the name Pseudoxanthomonas yeongjuensis sp. nov. is proposed, with strain GR12-1T (=KACC 11580T=DSM 18204T) as the type strain.
