A Gram-positive actinobacterium, designated M24DS4T, was isolated from a soil sample collected from Aomi, Tokyo, Japan, using the membrane-filter method. Strain M24DS4T exhibited low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (96.1 %) with Streptomyces scabrisporus NBRC 100760T. Cell hydrolysates contained the ll-isomer of diaminopimelic acid and the predominant quinones were MK-9(H8) and MK-9(H6). The genomic DNA G+C content was 75 mol%. Comparison of the characteristics of strain M24DS4T and related members of the genus Streptomyces with validly published names showed that the strain represents a novel species of the genus, for which the name Streptomyces aomiensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M24DS4T ( = NBRC 106164T  = KACC 14925T).

A Gram-positive, aerobic, rod- or coccus-shaped, non-motile bacterium, designated DMZ1T, was isolated from soil of the Demilitarized Zone, South Korea. Strain DMZ1T grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 7–8 and with 1 % (w/v) NaCl. The isolate showed high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Knoellia aerolata 5317S-21T (98.2 %). The cell-wall sugars were glucose and ribose. The peptidoglycan amino acids were meso-diaminopimelic acid, glutamic acid and glycine. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C14 : 0. The polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and five unknown phospholipids. The isolate did not contain mycolic acids. The DNA G+C content was 72.6 mol%. The isolate showed <28 % DNA–DNA relatedness with members of the genus Knoellia. Phylogenetic, phenotypic and genotypic analysis indicated that strain DMZ1T represents a novel species of the genus Knoellia, for which the name Knoellia locipacati sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DMZ1T ( = KACC 15114T  = JCM 17313T).

A novel actinomycete, designated HM 537T, was isolated from soil in Hamedan Province, Iran. Cell-wall hydrolysates of strain HM 537T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid, and whole-cell hydrolysates contained ribose, glucose, galactose, rhamnose and traces of mannose. The main phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, hydroxyphosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and an unknown phospholipid. MK-9(H4), an unknown MK and MK-10(H4) were the predominant menaquinones. The major fatty acids included iso-C16 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 1 G and 9(?)-methyl C16 : 0. Strain HM 537T had the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Saccharothrix hoggarensis DSM 45457T (99.5 %) and Saccharothrix saharensis DSM 45456T (99.0 %). DNA–DNA hybridization studies showed relatedness values of 13.8 ± 3.3 % with S. hoggarensis DSM 45457T and 16.3 ± 3.5 % with S. saharensis DSM 45456T. Based on the results of phenotypic and genotypic studies, strain HM 537T represents a novel species of the genus Saccharothrix, for which the name Saccharothrix ecbatanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HM 537T ( = DSM 45486T = UTMC 00537T = CCUG 63021T).

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming bacterium (designated strain CC-Bw-5T) was isolated from chopped tomato stems. The isolate grew at 20–40 °C, pH 6.0–8.0 and tolerated 6  % (w/v) NaCl. The most closely related strains in terms of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity were Bacillus isabeliae (95.3  %) and Bacillus oleronius (95.3  %). The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 37.2 ± 3.6 mol%. Strain CC-Bw-5T was determined to possess C16 : 0, iso-C14 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 as predominant fatty acids. The polar lipid profile consisted of predominant amounts of diphosphatidylglycerol, and moderate-to-trace amounts of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, two unidentified glycolipids, an unidentified phospholipid and an unidentified phosphoglycolipid. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid; menaquinone (MK-7) was the predominant respiratory quinone. According to distinct phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic features, strain CC-Bw-5T is proposed to represent a novel species within the genus Bacillus for which the name Bacillus lycopersici sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CC-Bw-5T ( = BCRC 80623T = JCM 19140T).

A novel aerobic actinomycete, designated HA11110T, was isolated from a mangrove soil sample collected in Haikou, China. It formed white aerial mycelium and pale yellow substrate mycelium on Gause's synthetic agar no. 1. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that cells of HA11110T produced straight to spiral spore chains with spiny spores. Chemotaxonomic tests showed that the cell wall contained ll-diaminopimelic acid and the major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C14 : 0.16S rRNA gene sequence similarity showed that strain HA11110T belonged to the genus Streptomyces, most closely related to Streptomyces fenghuangensis GIMN4.003T (99.1 %), Streptomyces nanhaiensis SCSIO 01248T (98.8 %) and Streptomyces radiopugnans R97T (98.8 %). However, DNA–DNA hybridization studies of strain HA11110T with these three closest relatives showed relatedness values of 58.4, 49.7 and 47.2 %, respectively. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic data, strain HA11110T represents a novel species of the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces mangrovi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HA11110T ( = CGMCC 4.7117T = DSM 42113T).

The novel actinomycete strain PWB-003T, which produced fluostatins B and C antibiotics, was isolated from nearshore sediment collected from Panwa Cape, Phuket Province, Thailand. Data from the present polyphasic study indicated that strain PWB-003T represented a member of the genus Micromonospora. It produced single spores on substrate mycelia and contained meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. Whole-cell hydrolysate contained ribose, xylose, arabinose, mannose and glucose. The predominant menaquinone was MK-10 (H4). Cellular fatty acids comprised C18 : 1ω9c, iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity analysis, the novel strain was closely related to Micromonospora eburnea LK2-10T (99.38 %), Micromonospora chaiyaphumensis MC5-1T (99.16 %), Micromonospora yangpuensis FXJ6.011T (98.97 %), Micromonospora echinaurantiaca DSM 43904T (98.97 %), Micromonospora pallida DSM 43817T (98.97 %), Micromonospora sagamiensis DSM 43912T and Micromonospora auratinigra JCM 12357T (both 98.97 %). The G+C content of the DNA was 74.5 mol%. DNA–DNA relatedness values among strain PWB-003T and related type strains ranged from 11.3 ± 1.3 to 38.8 ± 1.1 %. On the basis of these observations, strain PWB-003T could be distinguished from its closely related type strains and is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Micromonospora, for which the name Micromonospora fluostatini sp. nov. (type strain PWB-003T = JCM 30529T = PCU 341T = TISTR 2345T) is proposed.

In 2001, a Gram-variable, facultatively anaerobic, endospore-forming bacterium isolated from biodeteriorated mural paintings in the Servilia tomb of the Roman necropolis of Carmona was deposited as Paenibacillus strain LMG 19508. Subsequently, the strain was characterized in detail using phenotypic and molecular methods. The 16S rRNA gene sequence confirmed that the strain belongs to the genus Paenibacillus and indicated its relationship to Paenibacillus mendelii CCM 4839T (96.7 % sequence similarity). The predominant menaquinone was MK-7. The cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid of the A1γ type. The DNA G+C content (50 mol%) and the major fatty acid (anteiso-C15 : 0) of strain LMG 19508T were also consistent with its affiliation to the genus Paenibacillus. DNA–DNA hybridization distinguished strain LMG 19508T from other phylogenetically related Paenibacillus species. Therefore, the isolate represents a novel species, for which the name Paenibacillus sepulcri sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CCM 7311T (=LMG 19508T).

Abstract A novel bacterium of the Streptomyces genus, designated TRM S81-3T, was isolated from soil in cotton fields of Xinjiang, China. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain TRM S81-3T ismost closely related to Streptomyces naganishii NBRC 12892T (98.96% sequence similarity); however, the average nucleotide identity (ANI) between strains TRM S81-3T and S. naganishii NBRC 12892T is relatively low (86.26%). Strain TRM S81-3T possesses LL-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic cell-wall diamino acid, MK-9(H4), MK-9(H6), and MK-9(H10) as the major menaquinones, and polar lipids including DPG, PE, PC, PI, PME, NPG and PL. The major fatty acids are iso-C16:0, anteiso-C15:0, anteiso-C17:1 ω9c, anteiso-C17:0, iso-C15:0, and C14:0. The genomic DNA G+C content is 72.1%. Based on the evidence from this polyphasic study, strain TRM S81-3T represents a novel species of Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces grisecoloratus is proposed. The type strain is TRM S81-3T (=CCTCC AA 2020002T=LMG 31942T).

Strain B538T is a Gram-positive, motile, rod-shaped bacterium, which was isolated from Xinjiang province in China. This organism grew optimally at 30–35 °C and pH 8.0–8.5. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain B538T belonged to the genus Paenibacillus and chemotaxonomic data (DNA G+C content, 47.0 mol%; major isoprenoid quinone, MK-7; cell wall type, A1γ meso-diaminopimelic acid; major fatty acids, anteiso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0) supported affiliation of the isolate with the genus Paenibacillus. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses showed that the isolate was most closely related to Paenibacillus glycanilyticus DS-1T, with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 98.1 %; sequence similarities to other members of the genus Paenibacillus used in the phylogenetic tree were less than 96.5 %. The DNA–DNA relatedness between strain B538T and P. glycanilyticus DS-1T was about 8.0 %. On the basis of physiological and molecular properties, strain B538T (=KCTC 3952T=DSM 16970T) is proposed as the type strain of a novel species within the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus xinjiangensis sp. nov. is proposed.

An actinomycete that developed sporangia containing four spores in a single row at the ends of short sporangiophores on branched aerial hyphae was isolated from subtropical forest soil. The isolate contained menaquinone MK-9(H4), glutamic acid, alanine and meso-diaminopimelic acid as cell-wall amino acids and madurose in the whole-cell hydrolysate. The 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the isolate formed a monophyletic cluster with Planotetraspora mira. On the basis of morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness data, a novel species of the genus Planotetraspora is proposed, Planotetraspora silvatica sp. nov. (type strain, TT 00-51T=NBRC 100141T=DSM 44746T).

A Gram-stain-positive, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium, designated XJ259T, was isolated from a cold spring sample from Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. The isolate grew optimally at 20–30 °C and pH 7.3–7.8. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that isolate XJ259T belonged phylogenetically to the genus Paenibacillus, and was most closely related to Paenibacillus xinjiangensis B538T (with 96.6 % sequence similarity), Paenibacillus glycanilyticus DS-1T (96.3 %) and Paenibacillus castaneae Ch-32T (96.1 %), sharing less than 96.0 % sequence similarity with all other members of the genus Paenibacillus. Chemotaxonomic analysis revealing menaquinone-7 (MK-7) as the major isoprenoid quinone, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and two unknown phosphoglycolipids as the major cellular polar lipids, a DNA G+C content of 47.0 mol%, and anteiso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids supported affiliation of the new isolate to the genus Paenibacillus. Based on these data, isolate XJ259T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus algorifonticola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is XJ259T ( = CGMCC 1.10223T  = JCM 16598T).
