A Gram-positive, halophilic bacterium, strain CAU 9536T, was isolated from a tidal flat sediment in the Yellow Sea, Republic of Korea. Strain CAU 9536T grew optimally at 30 °C, at pH 9.0 and in the presence of 13.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain CAU 9536T belonged to the genus Serinicoccus, and showed sequence similarity levels of 99.0 % to Serinicoccus profundi MCCC 1A05965T and 98.0 % to Serinicoccus marinus JC1078T. DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain CAU 9536T and the above two type strains were below 45.0 %. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of strain CAU 9536T was based on meso-diaminopimelic acid, in contrast to those of S. profundi and S. marinus. The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylinositol. Whole-cell hydrolysates contained mainly glucose and ribose. The major isoprenoid quinone was menaquinone MK-8 (H4), and the predominant cellular fatty acid was iso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C content of strain CAU 9536T was 73.5 mol%. Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic data, strain CAU 9536T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Serinicoccus, for which the name Serinicoccus chungangensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 9536T ( = KCTC 19774T = CCUG 59777T).

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming bacterium, strain CAU 9038T, was isolated from a tidal-flat sediment of DaeYiJac Island, Republic of Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol, the major isoprenoid quinone was MK-7 and the dominant cellular fatty acid was anteiso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 51.6 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the strain belonged to the genus Paenibacillus, with <96.1 % sequence similarity to type strains of Paenibacillus species with validly published names. The most closely related type strains to CAU 9038T were Paenibacillus thailandensis S3-4AT (96.1 % similarity) and Paenibacillus agaridevorans DSM 1355T (95.3 %). The phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic data clearly indicated that strain CAU 9038T represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus chungangensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CAU 9038T (=KCTC 13717T =CCUG 59129T).

A Gram-strain-negative, coccoid or oval-shaped, non-motile bacterial strain, designated MDM-1T, was isolated from a tidal-flat sediment on the Korean peninsula. Strain MDM-1T was found to grow optimally at pH 7.0–8.0, at 30 °C and in the presence of 2–3 % (w/v) NaCl. A neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain MDM-1T falls within the clade comprising species of the genus Algoriphagus, clustering with the type strains of Algoriphagus halophilus, A. lutimaris, A. chungangensis and A. machipongonensis, with which it exhibited 97.2–98.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. Sequence similarities to the type strains of the other recognized species of the genus Algoriphagus were 92.8–97.6 %. Strain MDM-1T was found to contain MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c) as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids were identified as phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine and two unidentified lipids. The DNA G+C content of strain MDM-1T was determined to be 42.7 mol% and the mean DNA–DNA relatedness with A. halophilus KCTC 12051T, A. lutimaris S1-3T, A. chungangensis KCTC 23759T, A. machipongonensis DSM 24695T and A. ratkowskyi CIP 107452T was 19.7–5.2 %. Differential phenotypic properties, together with the phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, revealed that strain MDM-1T is distinguishable from recognized species of the genus Algoriphagus. On the basis of the data presented, strain MDM-1T is proposed to represent a novel species of the genus Algoriphagus, for which the name Algoriphagus aestuarii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MDM-1T ( = KCTC 42199T = NBRC 110552T).

A Gram-staining-positive, endospore-forming, motile, rod-shaped bacterium, strain AD-1T, was isolated from a tidal flat sediment of the coast of Hwangdo on the Yellow Sea, Korea. Strain AD-1T grew optimally at pH 7.0–7.5 and 40 °C and in the presence of 5–10 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain AD-1T was most closely related to Thalassobacillus devorans G-19.1T (98.0 % sequence similarity) and Thalassobacillus cyri HS286T (97.8 %). The cell-wall peptidoglycan was based on meso-diaminopimelic acid and MK-7 was the predominant menaquinone. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and two unidentified lipids. The major fatty acids (>10 % of total fatty acids) were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C content of strain AD-1T was 45.2 mol%. It appears reasonable to classify strain AD-1T as a member of the genus Thalassobacillus. There were differences in fatty acid profiles and phenotypic and genetic characteristics between strain AD-1T and the type strains of the two Thalassobacillus species. On the basis of the data presented, strain AD-1T represents a novel species within the genus Thalassobacillus, for which the name Thalassobacillus hwangdonensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AD-1T (=KCTC 13254T =CCUG 56607T).

A Gram-negative, motile and pleomorphic bacterial strain, SMK-146T, was isolated from a tidal flat sediment of the Yellow Sea, Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated. Strain SMK-146T grew optimally at pH 7.0–8.0 and 30 °C. It contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C18 : 1 ω7c and 11-methyl C18 : 1 ω7c as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine. The DNA G+C content was 68.4 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain SMK-146T belongs to the genus Jannaschia. Strain SMK-146T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 95.3–97.0 % to the type strains of the five recognized Jannaschia species. The mean DNA–DNA relatedness value between strain SMK-146T and Jannaschia seosinensis KCCM 42114T, the closest phylogenetic neighbour, was 17 %. Differential phenotypic properties also revealed that strain SMK-146T differs from the recognized Jannaschia species. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, strain SMK-146T represents a novel species of the genus Jannaschia, for which the name Jannaschia seohaensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SMK-146T (=KCTC 22172T =CCUG 55326T).

A moderately halophilic, aerobic, Gram-negative bacterium was isolated from a tidal flat area of Dae-Chun, Chung-Nam, Korea. The strain, designated mano11T, comprised rod-shaped cells that were motile by means of polar flagella. It grew with 3–12 % NaCl and at 4–37 °C and pH 5.3–9.3. The predominant menaquinone present in this strain was MK-7 and diaminopimelic acid was not found in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain mano11T belongs to the genus Marinobacterium. Strain mano11T exhibited 92.8–98.3 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity when compared with the type strains of three other species of the genus Marinobacterium. DNA–DNA hybridization between strain mano11T and Marinobacterium georgiense DSM 11526T, its closest relative in terms of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, was 13 %. On the basis of the phenotypic, genetic and phylogenetic data, strain mano11T represents a novel species of the genus Marinobacterium, for which the name Marinobacterium halophilum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is mano11T (=KCTC 12240T=DSM 17586T).

A novel beige-pigmented, Gram-staining-negative, coccoid, motile and facultatively anaerobic bacteria, designated strain CJ24T, was isolated from the tidal flat sediment of the Yellow Sea in South Korea. Characterization of this strain was performed on the basis of polyphasic taxonomic methods. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA and gyrB genes revealed that strain CJ24T belongs to the genus Ferrimonas , sharing the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 96.9 % with Ferrimonas marina DSM 16917T. Strain CJ24T was able to grow optimally at 30 °C, at pH 6.0 and in the presence of 2 % NaCl (w/v). As an isoprenoid quinone, menaquinone (MK-7) was predominantly identified from this strain, while ubiquinone (Q-7) was also present as a minor component. The DNA G+C content of strain CJ24T was 60.2 mol%. The most abundant cellular fatty acids were C15 : 0 iso, C18 : 1ω9c, C16 : 0 and C17 : 0 iso. Therefore, strain CJ24T represents a novel species in the genus Ferrimonas for which the name Ferrimonas gelatinilytica sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is CJ24T ( = KACC 17065T = JCM 18720T).

A moderately halophilic bacterium, strain BH169T, capable of growing at salinities of 3–20 % (w/v) NaCl was isolated from a saline lake in China. Strain BH169T was strictly aerobic, short-rod-shaped and non-motile (non-flagellated). Its major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The genomic DNA G+C content was about 43 mol% and the predominant quinone was MK-7. The cell-wall peptidoglycan was of the A1γ type, containing meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolate formed a distinct phylogenetic line within the spore-forming rods of the genus Bacillus. The levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to the type strains of Bacillus species were below 93 %. On the basis of phenotypic and molecular properties, strain BH169T (=KCTC 3912T=DSM 16461T) represents the type strain of a novel species within the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus salarius sp. nov. is proposed.

A novel actinomycete, designated strain VN05A0561T, was isolated from plant litter collected at Ba Be National Park, Vietnam. The substrate mycelia and spore chains fragmented in a manner similar to nocardioform actinomycetes; the spores had smooth surfaces and were rod-shaped. Strain VN05A0561T had the following chemotaxonomic characteristics: meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan, arabinose and galactose as characteristic sugars, MK-8(H4) as the major isoprenoid quinone, phosphatidylcholine as the diagnostic phospholipid and iso-C16 : 0 as the major cellular fatty acid. Strain VN05A0561T shared low levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (<97 %) with the type strains of recognized species of the genus Pseudonocardia and could be differentiated from its closest phylogenetic relatives based on phenotypic characteristics. These results suggested that strain VN05A0561T represents a novel species of the genus Pseudonocardia, for which the name Pseudonocardia babensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is VN05A0561T (=VTCC-A-1757T=NBRC 105793T).

An aerobic, spore-forming, moderately halophilic bacterium, strain BH260T, was isolated from a salt lake in China. Cells of this strain were found to be motile rods with flagella. The organism grew optimally at 30–32 °C and pH 8·0 in the presence of 12–15 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolate formed a clade with the type strains of the genus Lentibacillus. The levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity for strain BH260T with respect to Lentibacillus salsus KCTC 3911T, Lentibacillus juripiscarius JCM 12147T and Lentibacillus salicampi KCCM 41560T were 96·0, 95·5 and 95·3 %, respectively. Chemotaxonomic data (a DNA G+C content of 44 mol%; MK-7 as the major isoprenoid quinone; A1γ-meso-diaminopimelic acid as the cell-wall type; phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol as the major polar lipids; anteiso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids) also supported assignment of the isolate to the genus Lentibacillus. On the basis of physiological and molecular properties, the isolate represents a novel species within the genus Lentibacillus, for which the name Lentibacillus lacisalsi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BH260T (=KCTC 3915T=DSM 16462T).

A Gram-negative, motile, pale-yellow-pigmented, oval-shaped bacterial strain, DF-42T, was isolated from a tidal flat sediment in Korea. Strain DF-42T grew optimally at 25–30 °C and in the presence of 2–3 % (w/v) NaCl. It contained Q-8 as the predominant ubiquinone and C16 : 0, C18 : 1 ω7c and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 48.3 mol%. Phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DF-42T falls within the evolutionary radiation enclosed by the genus Photobacterium. Strain DF-42T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 93.8–97.9 % to the type strains of Photobacterium species with validly published names. DNA–DNA relatedness data and differential phenotypic properties made it possible to categorize strain DF-42T as representing a species that is separate from previously described Photobacterium species. The name Photobacterium lutimaris sp. nov. is proposed, with strain DF-42T (=KCTC 12723T=JCM 13586T) as the type strain.
