A Gram-staining-positive, filamentous bacterial strain, designated A-T 0308T, was isolated from soil of a tropical mangrove forest in Thailand. Strain A-T 0308T developed spherical sporangia containing non-motile spores on aerial mycelium. The novel strain contained meso-diaminopimelic acid, N-acetyl-type peptidoglycan and madurose, mannose, ribose, galactose and glucose as whole-cell sugars. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9(H4) and MK-9(H6); a small amount of MK-9(H2) and MK-9 was also detected. Mycolic acids were not detected. The diagnostic phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside and phosphoglycolipid. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0 and 10-methylated C17 : 0. The G+C content of the DNA was 72 mol%. Phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses showed that the novel isolate had characteristics typical of members of the genus Sphaerisporangium. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis also indicated that the strain belongs to the genus Sphaerisporangium and that it represents a clade distinct from other members of the genus with sequence similarities ranging from 96.3 to 97.8 % between the novel strain and its closest relatives. Based on the results of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic studies, strain A-T 0308T ( = BCC 21702T  = NBRC 107571T) represents a novel species of the genus Sphaerisporangium, for which the name Sphaerisporangium krabiense sp. nov. is proposed.

Two novel bacterial strains were isolated from tropical rain forest soil from Thailand. Strains A-T 0875T and A-T 1383T stained Gram-positive and were filamentous bacteria that developed cylindrical sporangia containing four oval- to rod-shaped spores at the ends of short sporangiophores on branched aerial mycelium. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid, glutamic acid and alanine as cell-wall amino acids; whole-cell hydrolysates contained rhamnose, madurose, glucose, galactose and 3-O-methylmannose as whole-cell sugars. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4). Mycolic acids were not detected. The diagnostic phospholipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0 and 10-methyl-C17 : 0. For both strains, the G+C content of the genomic DNA was 71 mol%. Phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses showed that the characteristics of the two isolates were typical of members of the genus Planotetraspora. Furthermore, 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis also indicated that the strains belonged to the genus Planotetraspora but as representatives of two novel species. Following an evaluation of our phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic studies, two novel species are proposed, Planotetraspora kaengkrachanensis sp. nov. (type strain A-T 0875T=BCC 24832T=NBRC 104272T) and Planotetraspora phitsanulokensis sp. nov. (type strain A-T 1383T=BCC 26045T=NBRC 104273T).

A rod-shaped Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, aerobic and fucoidan-digesting strain, designated TC2T, was isolated from marine algae collected from the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk at Abashiri, Hokkaido, Japan. The bacterium formed yellow, translucent, circular and convex colonies. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the strain belonged to the genus Flavobacterium, with the highest sequence similarities of 97.1 to 97.3 % to the type strains of Flavobacterium frigidarium, Flavobacterium frigoris, Flavobacterium limicola and Flavobacterium psychrolimnae. DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain TC2T and the above-mentioned species were lower than 28 %. The genomic DNA G+C content was 33.9 mol%. The major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6 and the predominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (which comprises iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1 ω7c). Strain TC2T could be differentiated from related species by several phenotypic characteristics. Thus, on the basis of these results, strain TC2T represents a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium, for which the name Flavobacterium algicola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TC2T (=NBRC 102673T =CIP 109574T).

A Gram-reaction-positive, rod-shaped, non-motile, non-spore-forming bacterium (strain BX5-10T) was isolated from the soil of a ginseng field on Baekdu Mountain in Jilin district, China. The taxonomic position of this bacterium was determined in an investigation based on a polyphasic approach. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain BX5-10T was shown to belong to the family Nocardioidaceae and to be most closely related to Nocardioides plantarum NCIMB 12834T (96.5 % sequence similarity), Nocardioides dokdonensis KCTC 19309T (96.2 %) and Nocardioides fonticola NAA-13T (95.1 %). Strain BX5-10T was characterized chemotaxonomically as having ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid in its cell-wall peptidoglycan, MK-8(H4) as the predominant menaquinone and C18 : 1ω9c, C16 : 0 and C17 : 1ω8c as its major fatty acids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 70.3 mol%. The novel strain could be differentiated genotypically and phenotypically from all recognized species of the genus Nocardioides. Based on the results of the phylogenetic analyses and the genotypic and phenotypic data, a novel species, Nocardioides ginsengagri sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is BX5-10T ( = KCTC 19467T = DSM 21362T).

A novel actinomycete, designated strain NEAU-FHS4T, was isolated from the root of black false hellebore (Veratrum nigrum L.). Strain NEAU-FHS4T formed single spores with smooth surfaces on substrate mycelium. The novel strain contained meso-diaminopimelic as amino acid of the peptidoglycan and xylose and glucose as whole-cell sugars. The predominant menaquinones were MK-10(H6) and MK-10(H8). Mycolic acids were not detected. The diagnostic phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C16 : 0, C18 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. Phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analysis showed that the novel isolate had characteristics typical of members of the genus Plantactinospora . 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis also indicated that strain NEAU-FHS4T belonged to the genus Plantactinospora , with highest sequence similarities to Plantactinospora mayteni YIM 61359T (98.88 %) and Plantactinospora endophytica YIM 68255T (98.85 %). The results of DNA–DNA hybridization and physiological and biochemical tests allowed genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of the novel strain from the most closely related strains. Based on morphological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain NEAU-FHS4T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Plantactinospora , for which the name Plantactinospora veratri sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NEAU-FHS4T ( = CGMCC 4.7143T = DSM 46718T).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-motile, rod- and coccus-shaped bacterium, designated strain B6-12T, was isolated from sediment collected from the River Geumho in South Korea. In comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the novel strain appeared to be affiliated with the class Alphaproteobacteria and to be most closely related to Kaistia adipata KCTC 12095T, Kaistia dalseonensis DSM 18800T, Kaistia geumhonensis DSM 18799T, Kaistia granuli KCTC 12575T, Kaistia soli KACC 12605T and Kaistia terrae KACC 12910T, with sequence similarities of 96.2–99.1 %. The predominant ubiquinone in the isolate was Q-10, major fatty acids were C18 : 0, C18 : 1ω7c and C19 : 0ω8c cyclo, and genomic DNA G+C content was 63.0 mol%. Based on the phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic evidence and the results of DNA–DNA hybridizations, strain B6-12T represents a novel species in the genus Kaistia , for which the name Kaistia defluvii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is B6-12T ( = KCTC 23766T  = JCM 18034T).

The taxonomic position of a novel aerobic, Gram-positive actinobacteria, designated strain RB5T, was determined using a polyphasic approach. The strain, isolated from the gut of the fungus-farming termite Macrotermes natalensis, showed morphological, physiological and chemotaxonomic properties typical of the genus Streptomyces . Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the closest phylogenetic neighbour of RB5T was Streptomyces polyrhachis DSM 42102T (98.87 %). DNA–DNA hybridization experiments between strain RB5T and S. polyrhachis DSM 42102T resulted in a value of 27.4 % (26.8 %). The cell wall of strain RB5T contained ll-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic amino acid. Mycolic acids and diagnostic sugars in whole-cell hydrolysates were not detected. The strain produced the following major phospholipids: diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol-mannoside and phosphatidylserine. The menaquinone profile showed hexa- and octahydrogenated menaquinones containing nine isoprene units [MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H8)]. The strain exhibited a fatty acid profile containing the following major fatty acids: 12-methyltridecanoic acid (iso-C14 : 0) 12-methyltetradecanoic acid (anteiso-C15 : 0), 13-methyltetradecanoic acid (iso-C15 : 0) and 14-methylpentadecanoic acid (iso-C16 : 0). Here, we propose a novel species of the genus Streptomyces – Streptomyces smaragdinus with the type strain RB5T (=VKM Ac-2839T=NRRL B65539T).

The predominant cellular fatty acids were unsaturated C17 : 1, C18 : 1, saturated C16 : 0, and C17 : 0. The G+C content of the DNA was 70.8 mol%. Phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses showed that the isolate had the typical characteristics of members of the genus Planobispora . Furthermore, 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis also indicated that this strain belonged to the genus Planobispora but as a putative novel species. DNA–DNA relatedness values that differentiate the isolate from previously described members of the genus Planobispora were significantly below 70 %. Following an evaluation of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic studies, it is proposed that the isolate represents a novel species, Planobispora siamensis sp. nov.; the type strain is A-T 4600T ( = BCC 39469T = NBRC 107568T).

A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacterium, strain GH9-3T, isolated from greenhouse soil, was investigated in a polyphasic study. The novel organism grew at 10–35 °C, 0–3 % NaCl and pH 5–9. It had ubiquinone 8 (Q-8) as the predominant isoprenoid quinone and possessed C16 : 0, summed feature 3, C17 : 0 cyclo and C18 : 1 ω7c as the major fatty acids (together representing 87.4 % of the total). The DNA G+C content was 67.1 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of strain GH9-3T showed that it grouped within the Variovorax cluster, with highest sequence similarities to Variovorax paradoxus IAM 12373T (98.3 %) and Variovorax dokdonensis DS-43T (98.0 %). DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain GH9-3T and V. paradoxus DSM 30034T and V. dokdonensis DS-43T were 38 and 29 %, respectively. Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic features, it is proposed that strain GH9-3T represents a novel species of the genus Variovorax with the name Variovorax soli sp. nov. The type strain is GH9-3T (=KACC 11579T=DSM 18216T).

A Gram-positive, aerobic, coccus-shaped, non-endospore-forming bacterium (Gsoil 633T) was isolated from soil from a ginseng field in Pocheon province in South Korea. The novel isolate was characterized in order to determine its taxonomic position. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, strain Gsoil 633T was shown to belong to the family Propionibacteriaceae. The closest phylogenetic relative was Microlunatus phosphovorus DSM 19555T, with 96.1 % sequence similarity; the sequence similarity to other members of the family was less than 95.4 %. The isolate was characterized chemotaxonomically as having ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan, MK-9(H4) as the predominant menaquinone and anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 69.8 mol%. The morphological and chemotaxonomic properties of the isolate were consistent with those of M. phosphovorus, but the results of physiological and biochemical tests allowed the phenotypic differentiation of strain Gsoil 633T from this species. Therefore, strain Gsoil 633T represents a novel species, for which the name Microlunatus ginsengisoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Gsoil 633T (=KCTC 13940T=DSM 17942T).

A novel Gram-stain–positive, filamentous bacterial strain (A-T 7458T) was isolated from soil collected from hill evergreen forest in Thailand. The strain developed cylindrical sporangia containing a longitudinal pair of motile spores, on short ramifications of aerial mycelia. From a taxonomic study using a polyphasic approach, strain A-T 7458T had typical characteristics of members of the genus Planobispora . 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the isolate was closely related to Planobispora siamensis A-T 4600T (98.5 %), Planobispora rosea JCM 3166T (97.6 %) and Planobispora longispora NBRC 13918T (97.6 %). The DNA–DNA relatedness values, which differentiated the novel strain from the closest species, were significantly below 70 %. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The whole-cell sugars contained ribose, madurose, mannose and glucose. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H2). The diagnostic phospholipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol-mannoside and aminophosphoglycolipid. The predominant cellular fatty acids were unsaturated C17 : 1 and C18 : 1, and saturated C16 : 0 and C17 : 0. Following an evaluation of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic characteristics, the novel isolate is proposed to represent a novel species of the genus Planobispora , to be named Planobispora takensis sp. nov. The type strain is A-T 7458T ( = BCC 48396T = NBRC 109077T).
