An alkaliphilic actinomycete strain, designated YIM 80379T, was isolated from a soil sample collected from the eastern desert of Egypt and subjected to polyphasic taxonomy. The strain produced substrate and aerial mycelia on different media, with an optimum pH for growth of 9·5–10 and scarce or no growth at pH 7. Strain YIM 80379T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid, no diagnostic sugars, type PIII phospholipids and MK-10(H6) and MK-10(H8) as the predominant menaquinones. All of these characters assign isolate YIM 80379T consistently to the genus Nocardiopsis. This was confirmed by 16S rDNA analysis. It can be differentiated from all Nocardiopsis species with validly published names by phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA hybridization results. On the basis of polyphasic evidence, a novel species, Nocardiopsis alkaliphila sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain of the species is YIM 80379T (=CCTCC AA001031T=DSM 44657T).

Phylogenetic analysis of ‘Sarraceniospora aurea’ NBRC 14752 and strain NBRC 15120, based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, revealed that these organisms are related to members of the genus Actinocorallia. These organisms contained glutamic acid, alanine and meso-diaminopimelic acid as cell-wall amino acids and the menaquinones MK-9(H4), MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H8). The chemotaxonomic characteristics of the strains were consistent with those of the genus Actinocorallia. However, DNA–DNA hybridization and phenotypic characteristics revealed that the strains differed from the recognized species of the genus Actinocorallia. Therefore, we propose that ‘Sarraceniospora aurea’ NBRC 14752 and strain NBRC 15120 be reclassified in the genus Actinocorallia as a novel species, Actinocorallia aurea sp. nov. (type strain NBRC 14752T=DSM 44434T).

Two actinomycete strains, designated LIPI11-2-Ac034T and LIPI11-2-Ac042T, were isolated from leaf litter collected from Cibodas Botanical Garden, West Java, Indonesia. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences suggested that both isolates belong to the genus Actinoplanes. These isolates were closely related to Actinoplanes ferrugineus and Actinoplanes durhamensis with similarity values of 98.2 % and 97.7 % respectively, for strain LIPI11-2-Ac034T, and 99.0 % and 97.4–97.7 % respectively for strain LIPI11-2-Ac042T. Both isolates grew well on ISP 7 medium with brown soluble pigment production. Spores were motile and sporangia were irregular. The isolates contained meso-diaminopimelic acid in cell-wall hydrolysates, and mannose, glucose and galactose in whole-cell hydrolysates. The predominant menaquinone of strain LIPI11-2-Ac034T was MK-9(H4) while that of strain LIPI11-2-Ac042T was MK-9(H6). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0 for strain LIPI11-2-Ac034T, and iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0 for strain LIPI11-2-Ac042T. Phosphatidylethanolamine was detected as the diagnostic polar lipid. The DNA G+C contents of strains LIPI11-2-Ac034T and LIPI11-2-Ac042T were 71.5 and 70.7 mol%, respectively. Based on the differential phenotypic characteristics and the results of DNA–DNA hybridization and phylogenetic analysis, it is proposed that strains LIPI11-2-Ac034T and LIPI11-2-Ac042T represent two novel species of the genus Actinoplanes, for which the names Actinoplanes tropicalis sp. nov. (type strain LIPI11-2-Ac034T = InaCC A459T = NBRC 110973T) and Actinoplanes cibodasensis sp. nov. (type strain LIPI11-2-Ac042T = InaCC A458T = NBRC 110974T) are proposed.

A novel strain of the genus Paenibacillus, KFC91T, was isolated from the Kafni glacier of the Himalayas. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain KFC91T clustered with Paenibacillus antarcticus LMG 22078T (98.9 %) and Paenibacillus macquariensis LMG 6935T (98.7 %). The cell wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diamino acid, anteiso-C15 : 0 as the predominant fatty acid and MK-7 as the major isoprenoid quinone. Based on the phylogenetic analysis, chemotaxonomic characteristics and other phenotypic traits, strain KFC91T was assigned to the genus Paenibacillus. DNA–DNA hybridization experiments of KFC91T with P. antarcticus and P. macquariensis showed reassociation values of 39 and 52 %, respectively. Thus, it is proposed that strain KFC91T should be assigned the status of a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus and the name proposed is Paenibacillus glacialis sp. nov., with KFC91T (=NCCB 100252T =DSM 22343T) as the type strain.

A novel actinomycete strain, YIM 001T, was isolated from a soil sample collected from Hebei province, People's Republic of China. The strain was characterized by white to grey aerial mycelium. Long spore chains, borne on the aerial mycelium, were straight to Rectiflexibiles; the spore chains were composed of non-motile and coccoid spores with a warty surface. The cell wall of strain YIM 001T contained ll-diaminopimelic acid (A2pm) and traces of meso-A2pm. Whole-cell hydrolysates contained mainly glucose and small amounts of xylose, galactose and arabinose. The menaquinones were MK-9(H4) (4·6 %), MK-9(H6) (60 %), MK-9(H8) (30·7 %) and MK-9(H10) (4·7 %). Phosphatidylethanolamine was the diagnostic phospholipid. The DNA G+C content of strain YIM 001T was 71·4 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that strain YIM 001T belongs to the genus Streptomyces. Based on its phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, strain YIM 001T (=CCTCC AA 203005T=CIP 107974T=DSM 41837T) is proposed as the type strain of a novel species, Streptomyces hebeiensis sp. nov.

An actinomycete strain (0345M-7T) was isolated from a soil sample from Yilan county, Taiwan. The isolate displayed substrate mycelia, upon which were borne short spore chains. The spore chains were composed of non-motile, smooth-surfaced, oval spores. Strain 0345M-7T had meso-diaminopimelic acid in its peptidoglycan. Whole-cell sugars were galactose, glucose, arabinose and ribose. The only phospholipid found was phosphatidylethanolamine. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4). Mycolic acids were not detected. Major cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0 (38.1 %) and C17 : 1 (25.4 %). The DNA G+C content of strain 0345M-7T was 68.9 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic data, it is proposed that strain 0345M-7T (=BCRC 16802T=KCTC 19116T) should be classified as the type strain of a novel species of the genus Amycolatopsis, Amycolatopsis taiwanensis sp. nov.

A novel lactic acid-producing, Gram-stain-positive, catalase-negative and rod-shaped strain, designated as strain C06_No.73T, was isolated from a traditional Japanese fermented beverage called kôso. According to the results of phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain C06_No.73T belongs to the genus Lentilactobacillus . The closest type strain was Lentilactobacillus curieae CCTCC M 2011381T, with a sequence identity of 98.1 %. The identity values with other strains were all below 97 %. The isolate propagated under the conditions of 18–39 °C (optimum, 27 °C for 48 h incubation) and pH 4.0–7.0 (optimum, pH 6.5). The G+C content of its genomic DNA was determined to be 37.9 mol%. The main fatty acids were C16 : 0, C18 : 1 ω7c, C18 : 1 ω9c and C19 : 0 cyclopropane 11,12. The major polar lipid was identified as phosphatidylglycerol. No isoprenoid quinone was detected. The predominant cell-wall amino acids were lysine, alanine, glutamic acid and aspartic acid. Neither meso-diaminopimelic acid nor ornithine were detected. On the basis of this polyphasic taxonomic study, the isolate is concluded to represent a novel species, for which the name Lentilactobacillus kosonis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is C06_No.73T (=NBRC 111893T=BCRC 81282T).

A salt- and alkali-tolerant actinomycete strain, YIM 90018T, was isolated from a saline and alkaline soil sample collected from Qinghai, China. Aerial hyphae of strain YIM 90018T were only produced on YIM 82 agar. Vegetative hyphae were well developed and did not fragment. Straight or flexuous (rectiflexibiles) spore chains were produced. The isolate grew well with 25 % (w/v) MgCl2 . 6H2O and at pH 10. All of these characters indicated that strain YIM 90018T belonged to the genus Streptomyces. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence, DNA–DNA hybridization and phenotypic characteristics, strain YIM 90018T could be differentiated from all recognized species of the genus Streptomyces. A novel species, Streptomyces sparsus sp. nov., is proposed, with strain YIM 90018T ( = CCTCC AA204019T = DSM 41858T) as the type strain.

A novel Gram-stain-positive, slightly halophilic, facultatively alkaliphilic, catalase-positive, oxidase-negative, endospore-forming, motile, rod-shaped, aerobic bacterium, designated strain JSM 082006T, was isolated from an oyster collected from Naozhou Island in the South China Sea. The isolate grew in 0–18 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0.5–4.0 %), at pH 6.0–10.5 (optimum, pH 8.0) and at 15–45 °C (optimum, 30 °C). meso-Diaminopimelic acid was present in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0. Strain JSM 082006T contained MK-7 as the predominant respiratory quinone and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine as the major polar lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 40.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that strain JSM 082006T should be assigned to the genus Bacillus and that it was most closely related to the type strains of Bacillus barbaricus (sequence similarity 99.1 %) and Bacillus arsenicus (97.5 %), followed by those of Bacillus rigui (96.6 %) and Bacillus solisalsi (96.1 %). Phylogenetic analysis, DNA–DNA relatedness values, phenotypic characteristics and chemotaxonomic data support the view that strain JSM 082006T represents a novel species of the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus nanhaiensis sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is JSM 082006T ( = DSM 23009T  = KCTC 13712T).

Three novel Gram-stain-positive bacteria, designated IY07-20T, IY07-56T and IY07-113, were isolated from soil samples from Iriomote Island, Okinawa, Japan, and their taxonomic positions were investigated by a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons showed that the three isolates were closely related to the members of the genus Agromyces , with similarity range of 95.6–98.7 %. The isolates contained l-2,4-diaminobutylic acid, d-alanine, d-glutamic acid and glycine in their peptidoglycans. The predominant menaquinone was MK-12 and the major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The DNA G+C contents were 70.9–72.9 mol%. The chemotaxonomic characteristics of the isolates matched those described for members of the genus Agromyces . The results of phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA hybridization, along with differences in phenotypic characteristics between strains IY07-20T, IY07-56T and IY07-113 and the species of the genus Agromyces with validly published names, indicate that the three isolates merit classification as representatives of two novel species of the genus Agromyces , for which the names Agromyces iriomotensis sp. nov. and Agromyces subtropica sp. nov. are proposed; the type strains are IY07-20T ( = NBRC 106452T = DSM 26155T) and IY07-56T ( = NBRC 106454T = DSM 26153T), respectively.

Two strains of bacteria isolated from the blood of French domestic cows were found to be similar to Bartonella species on the basis of phenotypic characteristics. Genotypic analysis based on sequence comparison of the 16S rRNA and citrate synthase (gltA) genes and on DNA–DNA hybridization showed that the two isolates represent a distinct and new species of Bartonella. Moreover, the phylogenetic analysis inferred from comparison of 16S rRNA and gltA sequences demonstrated that the new Bartonella species is related to other ruminant-derived Bartonella species. The name Bartonella chomelii is proposed for the new species. The type strain of Bartonella chomelii sp. nov. is A828T (=CIP 107869T=CCUG47497T).
