A novel actinomycete, designated strain FXJ1.034T, was isolated from acidic soil collected in Jiangxi Province, South-east China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain FXJ1.034T belonged to the genus Lentzea and showed high sequence similarities to Lentzea kentuckyensis NRRL B-24416T (98.5 %) and Lentzea albida NBRC 16102T (98.3 %). Morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics supported its assignment to the genus Lentzea . The results of DNA–DNA hybridization, physiological and biochemical tests allowed genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of the novel strain from closely related species. Based on the evidence presented here, strain FXJ1.034T represents a novel species of the genus Lentzea , for which the name Lentzea jiangxiensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FXJ1.034T ( = CGMCC 4.6609T  = NBRC 106680T).

A novel actinomycete, designated strain NEAU-FHS4T, was isolated from the root of black false hellebore (Veratrum nigrum L.). Strain NEAU-FHS4T formed single spores with smooth surfaces on substrate mycelium. The novel strain contained meso-diaminopimelic as amino acid of the peptidoglycan and xylose and glucose as whole-cell sugars. The predominant menaquinones were MK-10(H6) and MK-10(H8). Mycolic acids were not detected. The diagnostic phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C16 : 0, C18 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. Phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analysis showed that the novel isolate had characteristics typical of members of the genus Plantactinospora . 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis also indicated that strain NEAU-FHS4T belonged to the genus Plantactinospora , with highest sequence similarities to Plantactinospora mayteni YIM 61359T (98.88 %) and Plantactinospora endophytica YIM 68255T (98.85 %). The results of DNA–DNA hybridization and physiological and biochemical tests allowed genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of the novel strain from the most closely related strains. Based on morphological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain NEAU-FHS4T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Plantactinospora , for which the name Plantactinospora veratri sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NEAU-FHS4T ( = CGMCC 4.7143T = DSM 46718T).

A novel actinomycete, designated strain NEAU-Z6T, was isolated from eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) root. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain NEAU-Z6T belonged to the genus Nonomuraea , with highest sequence similarity to Nonomuraea monospora PT 708T (98.83 %), Nonomuraea rosea GW 12687T (98.55 %) and Nonomuraea rhizophila YIM 67092T (98.02 %). Sequence similarities between strain NEAU-Z6T and other species of the genus Nonomuraea ranged from 97.94 % ( Nonomuraea candida HMC10T) to 96.30 % ( Nonomuraea wenchangensis 210417T). Key morphological, physiological and chemotaxonomic characteristics of strain NEAU-Z6T were congruent with the description of the genus Nonomuraea . The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 64.51 mol%. DNA–DNA relatedness and comparative analysis of physiological, biochemical and chemotaxonomic data allowed genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain NEAU-Z6T from closely related species. Thus, strain NEAU-Z6T represents a novel species of the genus Nonomuraea , for which the name Nonomuraea solani sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is NEAU-Z6T ( = CGMCC 4.7037T = DSM 45729T).

A Gram-reaction-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming and rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated THG-45T, was isolated from soil of a ginseng field of Pocheon province in the Republic of Korea and its taxonomic position was investigated by a polyphasic approach. Growth occurred at 4–30 °C, at pH 5.5–9.0 and with 0–2 % (w/v) NaCl on nutrient agar. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strain THG-45T was shown to belong to the genus Pedobacter and was related to Pedobacter borealis G-1T (98.8 %), P. alluvionis NWER-II11T (97.9 %), P. agri PB92T (97.9 %), P. terrae DS-57T (97.5 %), P. suwonensis 15-52T (97.4 %), P. sandarakinus DS-27T (97.0 %) and P. soli 15-51T (97.0 %), but DNA relatedness between strain THG-45T and these strains was below 36 %. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 39 mol%. The only isoprenoid quinone detected in strain THG-45T was menaquinone-7 (MK-7). The predominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and an unidentified aminophosphoglycolipid. Phenotypic data and phylogenetic inference supported the affiliation of strain THG-45T to the genus Pedobacter , and a number of biochemical tests differentiated strain THG-45T from the recognized species of the genus Pedobacter . Therefore, the novel isolate represents a novel species, for which the name Pedobacter ginsenosidimutans sp. nov. is proposed, with THG-45T as the type strain ( = KACC 14530T = JCM 16721T).

Two novel bacteria, designated strains Gsoil 634T and Dae 20T, were isolated in South Korea from soil of a ginseng field and freshwater sediment, respectively and were characterized by a polyphasic approach to clarify their taxonomic positions. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that, although they probably represented two distinct species (indicated by a sequence similarity of 96.6 %), both strain Gsoil 634T and strain Dae 20T belonged to the genus Sphingomonas and were most closely related to ‘Sphingomonas humi’ PB323 (97.8 % and 96.7 % sequence similarity, respectively), Sphingomonas kaistensis PB56T (96.8 % and 96.7 %), Sphingomonas astaxanthinifaciens TDMA-17T (96.6 % and 95.4 %) and Sphingomonas jaspsi TDMA-16T (95.6 % and 95.8 %). For both novel strains, the major ubiquinone was Q-10, the major polyamine was homospermidine, the major cellular fatty acids included summed feature 7 (C18 : 1ω7c, C18 : 1ω9t and/or C18 : 1ω12t), C17 : 1ω6c and C16 : 0, and the polar lipids included sphingoglycolipid. These chemotaxonomic data supported the affiliation of both strains to the genus Sphingomonas . However, the DNA–DNA relatedness value between strain Gsoil 634T and ‘Sphingomonas humi’ PB323T was 31 %. Moreover, the results of physiological and biochemical tests allowed the phenotypic differentiation of strains Gsoil 634T and Dae 20T from established members of the genus Sphingomonas . Based on these data, the two isolates represent two novel species in the genus Sphingomonas , for which the names Sphingomonas ginsengisoli sp. nov. (type strain Gsoil 634T = KCTC 12630T = DSM 18094T = LMG 23739T) and Sphingomonas sediminicola sp. nov. (type strain Dae 20T  = KCTC 12629T = DSM 18106T = LMG 23592T) are proposed.

A bacterial strain designated SW15T was isolated from a sample of the reef-building coral Isopora palifera, collected in southern Taiwan. The novel strain was characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Cells of strain SW15T were Gram-negative, aerobic, light yellow, rod-shaped and motile by means of a single polar flagellum. In phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain SW15T appeared to belong to the genus Idiomarina in the class Gammaproteobacteria and to be most closely related to Idiomarina homiensis PO-M2T (97.6 % sequence similarity). Strain SW15T exhibited optimal growth between 20 and 30 °C, with NaCl between 3 % and 4 % (w/v) and at a pH value between 7 and 8. Predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (31.1 %), iso-C17 : 0 (15.4 %), iso-C17 : 1ω9c (10.0 %) and C16 : 0 (8.8 %). The major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone Q-8. The polar lipid profile consisted of a mixture of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylserine, an uncharacterized aminolipid and several uncharacterized phospholipids. The DNA G+C content was 51.1 mol%. The level of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain SW15T and Idiomarina homiensis PO-M2T was 42.6–56.5 %. The results of physiological and biochemical tests allowed the clear phenotypic differentiation of the novel strain from established species of the genus Idiomarina . Based on the genotypic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data, strain SW15T represents a novel species in the genus Idiomarina , for which the name Idiomarina aquimaris sp. nov. is proposed, with SW15T ( = LMG 25374T = BCRC 80083T) as the type strain.

A novel actinomycete, designated strain ASG 168T, was isolated from cave rock collected from Stegodon Sea Cave in Thailand. Long chains of non-motile spores that were oval or spherical in shape with a smooth surface developed on aerial mycelia. Substrate mycelia fragmented into irregular rod-shaped elements. A polyphasic taxonomic study showed that strain ASG 168T had typical characteristics of members of the genus Prauserella . 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain ASG 168T shared 97.5 % similarity with Prauserella marina MS498T and 96.7 % with Prauserella coralliicola SCSIO 11529T. Average nucleotide identity values with P. coralliicola SCSIO 11529T and P. marina MS498T were 82.98 and 76.08 %, respectively. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The whole-cell sugars contained ribose, arabinose and galactose. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The predominant fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C16 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c/C16 : 1 ω6c). The phospholipid profile consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannosides and two unknown phospholipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 70.6 mol%. Differentiation of strain ASG 168T from closely related species was evident from digital DNA–DNA hybridization values of 29.2 and 21.3 % with P. coralliicola and P. marina , respectively. Based on comparative analysis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic data, the novel actinomycete strain ASG 168T (=TBRC 13679T=NBRC 114887T) is proposed to be the type strain of a novel species, Prauserella cavernicola sp. nov.

A new strain of the genus Kribbella , PIP 118T, was isolated from the leaf of an Australian native apricot tree (Pittosporum angustifolium), or Gumbi Gumbi in the indigenous language. This strain is an aerobic actinobacterium consisting of hyphae that fragment into short to elongated rod-like elements. Phylogenetic evaluation based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis placed this isolate as a member of the family Nocardioidaceae and most closely related to Kribbella antibiotica YIM 31530T (98.6 %) and Kribbella koreensis LM 161T (98.4 %). Chemotaxonomic data including cell wall components, major menaquinone and major fatty acids confirmed the affiliation of strain PIP 118T to the genus Kribbella . The results of the phylogenetic analysis, including physiological and biochemical studies in combination with DNA–DNA hybridization, allowed the genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain PIP 118T and members of the most closely related species with validly published names. The name proposed for the new species is Kribbella endophytica sp. nov. The type strain is PIP 118T ( = DSM 23718T = NRRL B-24812T).

A bacterial strain, isolated from a sample of reef-building coral (Isopora palifera) collected off the coast of southern Taiwan, was characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The strain, designated sw-2T, was Gram-staining-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped and motile, with subpolar flagella, and formed greyish pink colonies. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain sw-2T was most closely related to Roseivivax halodurans Och 239T (97.4 % sequence similarity) and Roseivivax halotolerans Och 210T (96.4 %). The novel strain did not require NaCl for growth and exhibited optimal growth at 35–40 °C, at pH 7.5–8.0 and with 3–7 % (w/v) NaCl. It produced bacteriochlorophyll a under aerobic conditions. Summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c; 63.7 %) predominated in the cellular fatty acid profile. The novel strain’s major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone Q-10 and its genomic DNA G+C content was 68.8 mol%. The polar lipid profile consisted of a mixture of phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidyldimethylethanolamine, sulfo-quinovosyl diacylglycerol and three uncharacterized phospholipids. The level of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain sw-2T and Roseivivax halodurans Och 239T was only 15.0 %. The results of physiological and biochemical tests allowed the clear phenotypic differentiation of the novel strain from all established species of the genus Roseivivax . Based on the genotypic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data, strain sw-2T represents a novel species in the genus Roseivivax , for which the name Roseivivax isoporae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is sw-2T ( = LMG 25204T = BCRC 17966T).

An actinomycete, designated FXJ1.102T, was isolated from acidic soil collected in Jiangxi Province, south-east China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain FXJ1.102T belonged to the genus Nonomuraea and was most closely related to Nonomuraea candida HMC10T, Nonomuraea turkmeniaca DSM 43926T, Nonomuraea antimicrobica YIM 61105T and ‘Nonomuraea aegyptia’ S136 (98.9, 98.3, 97.9 and 97.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, respectively). The morphological characteristics were typical of the genus Nonomuraea . The chemotaxonomic properties, such as cell-wall chemotype IIIB, phospholipid type IV, MK-9(H4) as the major menaquinone and iso-C16 : 0 (22.2 %) as the major fatty acid, supported the assignment of the strain to the genus Nonomuraea . DNA–DNA relatedness and physiological tests allowed genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain FXJ1.102T from its closest phylogenetic relatives. The isolate therefore represents a novel species, for which the name Nonomuraea jiangxiensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FXJ1.102T ( = CGMCC 4.6533T = NBRC 106679T).

A novel bacterial strain, designated LCJ02T, was isolated on R2A agar from donkey (Equus asinus) milk powder and subjected to a taxonomic study using a polyphasic approach. Strain LCJ02T showed a Gram-negative reaction, was non-motile, non-spore-forming and possessed rod-shaped cells and yellow-pigmented colonies. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the novel isolate formed a cluster with several uncultured bacterial clones and with cultured members of the genera Hydrotalea , Sediminibacterium and Lacibacter (family Chitinophagaceae , phylum Bacteroidetes ). The gene sequence similarities with respect to the type strains of recognized species from the above genera and other phylogenetic neighbours ranged from 89.3 to 92.9 %. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 49.2 mol%, the only isoprenoid quinone was MK-7 and the major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 1 G and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH). The major polar lipids of strain LCJ02T were phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminophospholipids, one unidentified aminolipid and five unidentified lipids. The results of physiological and biochemical tests allowed phenotypic differentiation of strain LCJ02T from its closest phylogenetic neighbours. On the basis of the evidence of this polyphasic study, isolate LCJ02T represents a novel genus and species in the family Chitinophagaceae for which the name Asinibacterium lactis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LCJ02T ( = KCCM 90108T = JCM 18484T).
