A novel, Gram-stain-positive bacterium, designated strain EX-07T, was isolated from seujeot (Korean traditional food). The strain was aerobic, halotolerant and non-motile; it formed cocci that grouped into tetrads and sarcinae or formed irregular conglomerates. Growth occurred at pH 7–9, at 10–37 °C and with up to 9 % NaCl. Isolate EX-07T was catalase- and oxidase-negative and used sugars and organic acids as carbon sources. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of the novel strain showed 94.2–94.5 % similarity with the type strains of Trichococcus pasteurii , Trichococcus patagoniensis , Trichococcus collinsii , Trichococcus flocculiformis and Trichococcus palustris and only 92.2 % with representatives of the genera Bavariicoccus , Carnobacterium and Granulicatella . Sequence similarities based on the groEL gene ranged from 81.3 to 82.8 % between the novel isolate and the type strains of all species of the genus Trichococcus , and only 74.2 and 75.3 % with type strains of members of the genera Bavariicoccus and Granulicatella , respectively. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 39.6 mol%. The predominant fatty acids were C16 : 1ω9c, C18 : 1ω9c, C16 : 0 and C14 : 0. The polar lipid profile was very complex and included phosphatidylethanolamine and several unidentified aminolipids, glycolipids and phospholipids. Based on the genotypic and phenotypic results obtained in this study, it is proposed that isolate EX-07T represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Carnobacteriaceae for which the name Jeotgalibaca dankookensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Jeotgalibaca dankookensis is EX-07T ( = KCCM 90229T = JCM 19215T).

A novel filamentous bacterium, designated NariEXT, was isolated from soil collected from Chott Melghir salt lake, which is located in the south-east of Algeria. The strain was an aerobic, halotolerant, thermotolerant, Gram-positive bacterium that was able to grow in NaCl concentrations up to 21 % (w/v), at 37–60 °C and at pH 5.0–9.5. The major fatty acids were iso- and anteiso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 47.3 mol%. The major menaquinone was MK-7, but MK-6 and MK-8 were also present. The polar lipid profile consisted of phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine (methyl-PE). Results of molecular and phenotypic analysis led to the description of the strain as a new member of the family Thermoactinomycetaceae . The isolate was distinct from members of recognized genera of this family by morphological, biochemical and chemotaxonomic characteristics. Strain NariEXT showed 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 95.38 and 94.28 % with the type strains of Desmospora activa and Kroppenstedtia eburnea , respectively, but differed from both type strains in its sugars, polar lipids and in the presence of methyl-PE. On the basis of physiological and phylogenetic data, strain NariEXT represents a novel species of a new genus of the family Thermoactinomycetaceae for which the name Melghirimyces algeriensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Melghirimyces algeriensis, the type species of the genus, is NariEXT ( = DSM 45474T = CCUG 59620T).

A novel Gram-stain-positive, actinobacterial strain, designated C5-26T, was isolated from soil from a natural cave in Jeju, Republic of Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. The organism was aerobic, and cells were non-spore-forming, non-motile cocci that occurred singly, in pairs, in triplets, in tetrads, in short chains or in irregular clusters. Colonies of the cells were circular, convex, entire and white. The peptidoglycan type was A4α with an l-Ser–d-Asp interpeptide bridge. The whole-cell sugars comprised glucose, rhamnose, mannose, arabinose, galactose and ribose. The major menaquinone was MK-8(H4). The polar lipids contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and an unidentified phospholipid. The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0 and iso-C16 : 1 h. The size of the draft genome was 5.32 Mbp with depth of coverage of 161×. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 67.1 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the novel isolate belonged to the family Dermacoccaceae and formed a distinct subcluster at the base of the radiation of the genus Luteipulveratus . Highest sequence similarities of the novel isolate were found to the type strains of Luteipulveratus halotolerans (96.2 %), Branchiibius hedensis (95.4 %), Luteipulveratus mongoliensis (95.4 %) and Branchiibius cervicis (95.3 %). The whole genome-based phylogeny supported the novelty of the isolate at the genus level in the family Dermacoccaceae . On the basis of data from this polyphasic study, strain C5-26T (=KCTC 39632T=DSM 108676T) represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Dermacoccaceae , for which the name Leekyejoonella antrihumi gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-stain-negative, short rod-shaped, non-flagellated, yellow bacterium, designated strain 5GHs7-2T, was isolated from a greenhouse soil sample in South Korea. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of strain 5GHs7-2T indicated that the isolate belonged to the family Chitinophagaceae , and exhibited the highest sequence similarities with members of the genera Terrimonas (89.2–92.6 %), Sediminibacterium (90.8–91.4 %) and Chitinophaga (89.2–91.7 %), Filimonas lacunae YT21T (91.7 %), members of the genus Segetibacter (90.2–91.6 %), Parasegetibacter luojiensis RHYL-37T (90.9 %) and Flavihumibacter petaseus T41T (91.2 %). Flexirubin-type pigments were present. The major cellular fatty acids of the novel strain were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 1 G. The polar lipid profile consisted of a large amount of phosphatidylethanolamine, and moderate and small amounts of several unknown aminolipids and lipids. The only respiratory quinone of strain 5GHs7-2T was MK-7, and the DNA G+C content was 47.6 mol%. On the basis of the evidence presented, it is concluded that strain 5GHs7-2T represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Chitinophagaceae , for which the name Parafilimonas terrae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is 5GHs7-2T ( = KACC 17343T = DSM 28286T).

A novel psychrotolerant, Gram-negative, shiny white, curved-rod-shaped, facultatively anaerobic bacterium PB1T was isolated from a soil sample collected from a glacier forefield of the Larsemann Hills, East Antarctica. Isolate PB1T has catalase and low urease activity and hydrolyses gelatin and starch. Strain PB1T is able to grow between −5 °C and 30 °C with optimum growth at 14–20 °C. Glycerol, dl-arabinose, d-xylose, d-galactose, d-fructose, d-lyxose, d-fucose and potassium gluconate are used as sole carbon sources. The major quinone is ubiquinone Q-8. The major fatty acids (>10 %) for PB1T are C16 : 0 (19.1 %), C16 : 1ω7cis (44.6 %) and C18 : 1ω7cis (16.2 %). The major polyamines are putrescine [54.9 µmol (g dry weight)−1] and 2-hydroxy putrescine [18.5 µmol (g dry weight)−1]. DNA G+C content is 62.5 mol%. Strain PB1T is phylogenetically related to species of the genus Herbaspirillum , with highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to Herbaspirillum canariense (97.3 %), Herbaspirillum aurantiacum (97.2 %), Herbaspirillum soli (97.2 %) and Herbaspirillum frisingense (97.0 %). The DNA–DNA relatedness values were below 30 % between PB1T and the type strains of Herbaspirillum canariense , Herbaspirillum aurantiacum and Herbaspirillum soli . The different geographical origin of strain PB1T from its closest phylogenetic relatives resulted in different phenotypic and genotypic specifications, whereby strain PBT represents a novel species of the genus Herbaspirillum , for which the name Herbaspirillum psychrotolerans is proposed. The type strain is PB1T (DSM 26001T = LMG 27282T).

A Gram-reaction-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile, red-pigmented bacterial strain, designated ZLD-7T, was isolated from a soil sample collected from an arid area in Xinjiang Province in north-west China, and characterized by using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain ZLD-7T was a member of the genus Pontibacter in the family Cytophagaceae , with sequence similarities of 93.7–96.2 % to type strains of other Pontibacter species. The only isoprenoid quinone of strain ZLD-7T was MK-7, and its major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 4 (anteiso-C17 : 1 B and/or iso-C17 : 1 I), iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c). The polar lipid profile consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminolipid and four unidentified polar lipids. The DNA G+C content was 47.8 mol%. On the basis of the evidence presented, it is proposed that strain ZLD-7T represents a novel species of the genus Pontibacter , for which the name Pontibacter toksunensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is ZLD-7T ( = CCTCC AB 208003T = KCTC 23984T). Emended descriptions of Pontibacter roseus and Pontibacter akesuensis are also proposed.

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, facultatively anaerobic, short rod-shaped bacterium, designated HB171799T, was isolated from seacoast sandy soil collected at Qishui Bay, Hainan, PR China. The chemotaxonomic analysis revealed that the respiratory quinones were Q-8 and Q-7, and the major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 8 (comprising C18 : 1  ω7c and/or C18 : 1  ω6c), C16 : 0 and C18 : 0. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified phospholipid and an unidentified lipid. The size of the draft genome was 3.68 Mb with a DNA G+C content of 48.0 mol%. Results of phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene and genome sequences showed that the novel isolate belonged to the family Oceanospirillaceae and formed a distinct subcluster at the base of the radiation of the genus Marinomonas . The highest sequence similarity (96.0 %) of the novel isolate was found to the type strains of Marinomonas fungiae JCM 18476T and Marinomonas ostreistagni DSM23425T. The whole genome-based phylogeny and differences in cellular fatty acids and polar lipids readily distinguished strain HB171799T from all the closely related validly published type strains. Strain HB171799T is therefore suggested to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Oceanospirillaceae , for which the name Maribrevibacterium harenarium gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HB171799T (=CGMCC 1.16727T=JCM 33332T).

The Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-motile, oxidase- and catalase-positive, rod-shaped yellow-coloured bacterial strain MG-N-17T was isolated from a water sample of Lake Fertő/Neusiedler See (Hungary). Results of phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the strain forms a distinct linage within the family Verrucomicrobiaceae of the phylum Verrucomicrobia , and its closest relatives are Verrucomicrobium spinosum DSM 4136T (94.38 %) and Roseimicrobium gellanilyticum DC2a-G7T (91.55 %). The novel bacterial strain prefers a weak alkaline environment and grows optimally between 22–28 °C in the absence of NaCl. The major isoprenoid quinones are MK-10, MK-11, MK-12 and MK-9. The major cellular fatty acids are anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0, C16 : 1ω5c and iso-C14 : 0. The polar lipid profile contains phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified phospholipids and four unidentified glycolipids. The assembled draft genome of strain MG-N-17T had 44 contigs with an N50 value 348255 nt, 56.5× genome coverage, total length of 5 910 933 bp and G+C content of 56.9 mol%. Strain MG-N-17T (=DSM 106674T=NCAIM B.02643T) is proposed as the type strain of a new genus and species in the family Verrucomicrobiaceae , for which the name Phragmitibacter flavus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed.

A bacterial strain designated 26BT, which had been isolated from the cloaca of a toad-headed turtle, was subjected to a comprehensive taxonomic study. Comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences demonstrated that strain 26BT is a member of the family Neisseriaceae . Based on highest similarity values, Neisseria animaloris DSM 21642T (95.15 %), Alysiella filiformis ATCC 15532T (95.06 %), Uruburuella testudinis 07_OD624T (94.71 %), Uruburuella suis CCUG 47806T (94.66 %) and Alysiella crassa DSM 2578T (94.64 %) were identified as the closest relatives. Average nucleotide identity values based on the blast algorithm (ANIb) indicated that U. suis (76.10/76.17 %), Neisseria shayeganii 871T (74.34/74.51 %), Stenoxybacter acetivorans (73.30/73.41 %), N. animaloris (72.98/72.80) %, A. filiformis (71.14/71.21 %) and A. crassa (70.53/71.15 %) are the next closest relatives. Like ANIb, genome-based phylogeny did not suggest the affiliation of strain 26BT with any established genus. The polyamine pattern consisted of the major compounds putrescine, 1,3-diaminopropane and spermidine and the major quinone was ubiquinone Q-8. In the polar lipid profile, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and an ornithine lipid were predominant. The fatty acid profile contained predominantly C16 : 1 ω7c, C12 : 0, C14 : 0, C16 : 0 and C12 : 0 3OH. The size of the genome was 2.91 Mbp and the genomic G+C content was 54.0 mol%. Since these data do not demonstrate an unambiguous association with any established genus, we here propose the novel genus Paralysiella with the type species Paralysiella testudinis gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain is 26BT (=CCM 9137T=LMG 32212T).

Enrichment cultures inoculated with hydrothermally influenced nearshore sediment from Papua New Guinea led to the isolation of an arsenic-tolerant, acidophilic, facultatively aerobic bacterial strain designated PNG-AprilT. Cells of this strain were Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, motile and did not form spores. Strain PNG-AprilT grew at temperatures between 4 °C and 40 °C (optimum 30–37 °C), at pH 3.5 to 8.3 (optimum pH 5–6) and in the presence of up to 2.7 % NaCl (optimum 0–1.0 %). Both arsenate and arsenite were tolerated up to concentrations of at least 0.5 mM. Metabolism in strain PNG-AprilT was strictly respiratory. Heterotrophic growth occurred with O2 or nitrate as electron acceptors, and aerobic lithoautotrophic growth was observed with thiosulfate or nitrite as electron donors. The novel isolate was capable of N2-fixation. The respiratory quinones were Q-8 and Q-7. Phylogenetically, strain PNG-AprilT belongs to the genus Burkholderia and shares the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the type strains of Burkholderia fungorum (99.8 %), Burkholderia phytofirmans (98.8 %), Burkholderia caledonica (98.4 %) and Burkholderia sediminicola (98.4 %). Differences from these related species in several physiological characteristics (lipid composition, carbohydrate utilization, enzyme profiles) and DNA–DNA hybridization suggested the isolate represents a novel species of the genus Burkholderia , for which we propose the name Burkholderia insulsa sp. nov. The type strain is PNG-AprilT ( = DSM 28142T = LMG 28183T).

Aniline blue-decolourizing bacterial strain 502str22T, isolated from sediment collected in the East Pacific, was subjected to characterization by a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain 502str22T belongs to the genus Novosphingobium , with closely related type strains ‘ Novosphingobium profundi ’ F72T (97.6%), N. mathurense SM117T (97.1%) and N. arvoryzae Jyi-02T (97.0%). Digital DNA–DNA hybridization and average nucleotide identity values between strain 502str22T and closely related type strains were 20.3–24.8% and 74.1–81.9%, respectively. The major cellular fatty acid (>10%) was C18:1 ω7c. The polar lipid profile consisted of a mixture of phosphatidylcholine, one sphingoglycolipid, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine. The DNA G+C content of strain 502str22T was 65.5 mol%. The polyphasic taxonomic results indicated that strain 502str22T represents a novel species of the genus Novosphingobium , for which the name Novosphingobium decolorationis sp. nov is proposed. The type strain is 502str22T (=KCTC 82134T= MCCC 1K04799 T).
