A novel anaerobic succinate-producing bacterium, strain ZWBT, was isolated from sludge collected from a biogas desulfurization bioreactor (Eerbeek, the Netherlands). Cells were non-spore-forming, motile, slightly curved rods (0.4–0.5 µm in diameter and 2–3 µm in length), and stained Gram-negative. The temperature range for growth was 25–40 °C, with an optimum at 37 °C. The pH range for growth was 7.0–9.0, with an optimum at pH 7.5. Strain ZWBT was able to ferment glycerol and several carbohydrates mainly to H2, succinate and acetate. Sulfur and fumarate could be used as electron acceptors by strain ZWBT. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 37.6 mol%. The most abundant fatty acids were iso-C14 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0 DMA. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strain ZWBT belongs to the family Ruminococcaceae and it is distantly related to Saccharofermentans acetigenes JCM 14006T (92.1 %). Based on the physiological features and phylogenetic analysis, strain ZWBT represents a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Ercella succinigenes gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Ercella succinigenes is ZWBT ( = DSM 27333T = JCM 19283T).

A Gram-stain-positive thermophilic bacterium, designated strain Nis3T, was isolated from compost. The strain grew at 23–57 °C (optimum, 50 °C); no growth was observed below 15 or above 60 °C. The pH range for growth was 5.9–8.8 (optimum, 7.0); no growth was observed below pH 5.4 or above pH 9.3. The DNA G+C content of strain Nis3T was 63.4 mol%. The dominant quinone type was ubiquinone Q-10. The major fatty acids were C18 : 1ω7c, C19 : 0ω8c cyclo and C18 : 0. The polar lipids comprised phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, hydroxyphosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, an unknown glycolipid and a ninhydrin-positive phospholipid. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis assigned this bacterium to the family Phyllobacteriaceae in the Alphaproteobacteria but it shared less than 95.2 % sequence similarity with other members of the family. The chemotaxonomic and phenotypic characteristics of strain Nis3T differed in some respects from those of members of the family Phyllobacteriaceae . Therefore, strain Nis3T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the family Phyllobacteriaceae , for which the name Thermovum composti gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Nis3T ( = JCM 17863T = KCTC 23707T).

A novel anaerobic, endospore-forming bacterium (strain M08 DMBT) was isolated from a terrestrial mud volcano (Taman Peninsula, Russia). Cells of the strain were motile rods 1.3–2.0 µm long and 0.4 µm in diameter. The temperature range for growth was 5–42 °C, with an optimum at 30 °C. The pH range for growth was H 6.5–11.0, with an optimum at pH 8.0. Growth of strain M08 DMBT was observed at NaCl concentrations of 0–5.0 % (w/v) with an optimum at 1.0 %. Strain M08 DMBT utilized 3,4-dimethoxybenzoic acid, 2-methoxyphenol, carbon monoxide, glucose, fructose, mannose, xylose and yeast extract. The end product of glucose fermentation was acetate. The DNA G+C content of strain M08 DMBT was 32.3 mol% (obtained via whole genome sequencing). The closest phylogenetic relative of strain M08 DMBT was Alkalibaculum bacchi (family Eubacteriaceae , class Clostridia ) with 95.17 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. Based on the phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic characteristics of the isolate, strain M08 DMBT is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Alkalibaculum , for which the name Alkalibaculum sporogenes sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Alkalibaculum sporogenes is M08 DMBT (=KCTC 15840T=VKM B-3387T).

A novel anaerobic chemoorganotrophic, facultatively alkaliphilic bacterium (strain M17 DMBT) was isolated from a coastal lake (Golubitsckoe, Taman Peninsula, Russia). Cells were motile rods, 1.6–2.1 µm long and 0.45 µm in diameter. The temperature range for growth was 14–42 °C, with an optimum at 30 °C. The pH range for growth was pH 5.5–10.0, with an optimum at pH 8.0–8.5. Growth of strain M17 DMBT was observed at NaCl concentrations of 1–12 % (w/v) with optimum growth at 1.5–2.0 %. Strain M17 MBTutilized glucose, fructose, sucrose, ribose, mannose, raffinose, arabinose, dextrin, yeast extract, peptone, carbon monoxide, vanillic acid and 3,4-dimethoxybenzoic acid. The end products from glucose fermentation were acetate and ethanol. The DNA G+C content of strain M17 DMBT was 39.1 mol%. The closest phylogenetic relative of strain M17 DMBT was Alkalibacter saccharofermentans with 97.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The OrthoANI value between M17 DMBT and A. saccharofermentans was 70.4 %. Based on the phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic characteristics of the isolate, strain M17 DMBT is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Alkalibacter for which the name Alkalibacter mobilis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Alkalibacter mobilis is M17 DMBT (=KCTC 15920T=VKM B-3408T).

A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic and heterotrophic bacterial strain, designed strain D1T, was isolated from a recirculating mariculture system in Tianjin, China. Its taxonomic position was determined using a polyphasic approach. Cells of strain D1T were non-flagellated short rods, 0.3–0.5 µm wide and 0.5–1.0 µm long. Growth was observed at 15–30 °C (optimum, 25 °C), at pH 5.5–9.0 (optimum, pH 6.5–7.0) and in the presence of 1–8 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 2–3 %). Cells contained carotenoid pigments but not flexirubin-type pigments. Strain D1T contained MK-6 as the sole menaquinone and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) as the sole phospholipid and four unidentified lipids. The major cellular fatty acids (>10 %) were iso-C15 : 0 (23.2 %), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (15.2 %), C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c (14.3 %), iso-C15 : 0 3-OH (13.5 %) and iso-C15 : 1 G (10.8 %). 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses indicated that strain D1T belonged to the family Flavobacteriaceae and showed closest phylogenetic relationship to the genus Lutibacter , with highest sequence similarity to Lutibacter aestuarii MA-My1T (92.2 %). The DNA G+C content of strain D1T was 35.9 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain D1T was considered to represent a novel species in a new genus of the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Wenyingzhuangia marina gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is D1T ( = CGMCC 1.12162T = JCM 18494T).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, orange-coloured, catalase- and oxidase-positive, non-motile bacterium, designated strain 92VT, was isolated from the marine sponge Amphilectus fucorum, collected from Lough Hyne, County Cork, Ireland. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain 92VT clustered with members of the family Flavobacteriaceae , the closest member being Aquimarina latercula NCIMB 1399T, with a gene sequence similarity of 97.5 %. Strain 92VT required seawater for growth with optimal growth occurring at 25 °C, at pH 6–7 and with 3 % (w/v) NaCl. MK-6 was the sole respiratory quinone present and the major fatty acids were iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 1ω9c and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH. The DNA G+C content was 36.1 mol%. Combined phenotypic differences and phylogenetic analysis indicate that strain 92VT represents a novel species of the genus Aquimarina , for which the name Aquimarina amphilecti sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 92VT ( = NCIMB 14723T = DSM 25232T).

A novel red-pigmented halophilic archaeon, strain EB27T, was isolated from Aran-Bidgol salt lake, a hypersaline playa in Iran. Cells of strain EB27T were non-motile and pleomorphic (rods to triangular or disc-shaped). Strain EB27T required at least 2.5 M NaCl and 0.1 M MgCl2 for growth. Optimal growth was achieved at 4 M NaCl and 0.5 M MgCl2. The optimum pH and temperature for growth were pH 7.5 and 40 °C; it was able to grow at pH 6.0–8.0 and 25–50 °C. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain EB27T is a member of the family Halobacteriaceae ; however, levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity were as low as 90.0, 89.3 and 89.1 % to the most closely related haloarchaeal taxa, namely Halalkalicoccus tibetensis DS12T, Halosimplex carlsbadense 2-9-1T and Halorhabdus utahensis AX-2T, respectively. The DNA G+C content of strain EB27T was 61 mol%. Strain EB27T contained phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol phosphate methyl ester, common phospholipids found in haloarchaea, together with two minor phospholipids. The only quinone present was MK-8(II-H2). Physiological, biochemical and phylogenetic differences between strain EB27T and recognized genera of extremely halophilic archaea suggest that this strain represents a novel species in a new genus within the family Halobacteriaceae , for which the name Halovenus aranensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Halovenus aranensis, the type species of the new genus, is strain EB27T ( = IBRC-M 10015T = CGMCC 1.11001T).

A novel Gram-stain-negative, facultatively anaerobic, catalase- and oxidase-positive, non-motile and pink-pigmented bacterium, designated G22T, was isolated from Gahai, a saltwater lake in Qinghai province, China. Optimal growth occurred at 33–35 °C, pH 7.0–7.5, and in the presence of 2–4 % (w/v) NaCl. The DNA G+C content was 40.0 mol%. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and three unknown lipids. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH, and MK-7 was the main respiratory quinone. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain G22T fell within the class Bacteroidia . Its closest phylogenetic neighbour was the recently described species Draconibacterium orientale , the sole member of the family Draconibacteriaceae , with merely 90.04 % sequence similarity. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic evidence observed, a novel species in a new genus, Tangfeifania diversioriginum gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed within the family Draconibacteriaceae . The type strain is G22T ( = CICC 10587T = DSM 27063T).

A halotolerant, psychrotolerant and methylotrophic methanogen, strain SY-01T, was isolated from the saline Lake Tus in Siberia. Cells of strain SY-01T were non-motile, cocci and 0.8–1.0 µm in diameter. The only methanogenic substrate utilized by strain SY-01T was methanol. The temperature range of growth for strain SY-01T was from 4 to 40 °C and the optimal temperature for growth was 30 °C. The pH range of growth was from pH 7.2 to 9.0, with optimal growth at pH 8.0. The NaCl range of growth was 0–1.55 M with optimal growth at 0.51 M NaCl. The G+C content of the genome of strain SY-01T was 43.6 mol % as determined by genome sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that strain SY-01T was most closely related to Methanolobus zinderi SD1T (97.3 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), and had 95.5–97.2 % similarities to other Methanolobus species with valid names. Genome relatedness between strain SY-01T and DSM 21339T was computed using average nucleotide identity and digital DNA–DNAhybridization, which yielded values of 79.7 and 21.7 %, respectively. Based on morphological, phenotypic, phylogenetic and genomic relatedness data presented here, it is evident that strain SY-01T represents a novel species of the genus Methanolobus , and the name Methanolobus halotolerans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SY-01T (=BCRC AR10051T=NBRC 113166 T=DSM 107642T).

A novel Gram-staining-negative, motile, non-pigmented, facultatively anaerobic, spirillum-shaped, halophilic and alkaliphilic bacterium, designated strain GCWy1T, was isolated from water of the coastal–marine wetland Gomishan in Iran. The strain was able to grow at NaCl concentrations of 1–10 % (w/v) and optimal growth was achieved at 3 % (w/v). The optimum pH and temperature for growth were pH 8.5 and 30 °C, while the strain was able to grow at pH 7.5–10 and 4–40 °C. Phylogenetic analysis based on the comparison of the 16S rRNA gene sequence placed the isolate within the class Gammaproteobacteria as a separate deep branch, with 92.1 % or lower sequence similarity to representatives of the genera Saccharospirillum and Reinekea and less than 91.0 % sequence similarity with other remotely related genera. The major cellular fatty acids of the isolate were C18 : 1ω7c, C16 : 0 and C17 : 0, and the major components of its polar lipid profile were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine. The cells of strain GCWy1T contained the isoprenoid quinones Q-9 and Q-8 (81 % and 2 %, respectively). The G+C content of the genomic DNA of this strain was 52.3 mol%. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis in combination with chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data, strain GCWy1T represents a novel species in a new genus in the family ‘ Saccharospirillaceae ’, order Oceanospirillales , for which the name Salinispirillum marinum gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is GCWy1T ( = IBRC-M 10765T = CECT 8342T).

A facultatively anaerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-motile and rod-shaped bacterium, strain N-10T, was isolated from the gut of the termite Reticulitermes speratus. Strain N-10T was closely related to Dysgonomonas gadei JCM 16698T according to 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity analysis (98 %) and DNA–DNA relatedness value (≤61.3 %). The optimum growth temperature of strain N-10T was 30 °C, which was distinct from that (37 °C) of known species of the genus Dysgonomonas . Growth of strain N-10T was inhibited on medium containing 5 or 20 % bile, unlike other species of the genus Dysgonomonas . In addition, acid production in the API 20A system and enzymic reactions in the Rapid ID 32A system of strain N-10T differed from those of other species of the genus Dysgonomonas . Based on these characteristics, strain N-10T represents a novel species of the genus Dysgonomonas , for which the name Dysgonomonas termitidis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is N-10T ( = JCM 30204T = CCUG 66188T).
