A Gram-negative, motile, strictly aerobic, violet-pigment-producing bacterium, designated strain FR1199T, was isolated from tidal flat sediment of Byunsan, South Korea. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain FR1199T represents a distinct line of descent within the genus Pseudoalteromonas. The phenotypic features of strain FR1199T were similar to those of Pseudoalteromonas phenolica and Pseudoalteromonas luteoviolacea, but several physiological and chemotaxonomical properties readily distinguished strain FR1199T from these species. Major fatty acids were straight-chain saturated (C16 : 0) and monounsaturated C18 : 1 ω7c fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 39 mol%. On the basis of polyphasic evidence, it is concluded that the isolate represents a novel species within the genus Pseudoalteromonas, for which the name Pseudoalteromonas byunsanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FR1199T (=JCM 12483T=KCTC 12274T).

A strictly aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped actinomycete, designated strain JC2056T, was isolated from a sediment sample of getbol, the tidal flat of Korea. Results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the isolate belonged to the genus Nocardioides, with the highest similarity being to Nocardioides luteus KCTC 9575T (95·7 %). The major menaquinone was MK-8(H4), and predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-16 : 0 and iso-16 : 1 H. The DNA G+C content was 70 mol%. Based on the morphological, physiological, biochemical and chemotaxonomical data presented in this study, strain JC2056T should be classified as a novel species, for which the name Nocardioides aestuarii sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is JC2056T (=IMSNU 14029T=KCTC 9921T=JCM 12125T).

A halotolerant, facultatively alkaliphilic bacterium, designated CL-MP28T, was isolated from the surface of a sediment core sample collected at a depth of 2247 m in the Ulleung Basin of the East Sea, Korea. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain CL-MP28T revealed an affiliation with the genus Oceanobacillus. The sequence similarities between the isolate and type strains of members of the genus Oceanobacillus were in the range 95.0–96.0 %, indicating that strain CL-MP28T represented a novel species within the genus. The strain was found to be Gram-positive, rod-shaped and motile by means of peritrichous flagella and was shown to produce ellipsoidal spores. The strain was strictly aerobic and able to grow with NaCl at concentrations in the range 0–14 % (w/v) at pH 7.5. The strain grew at temperatures of 15–42 °C and at pH 6.5–9.5. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (64.9 %), anteiso-C17 : 0 (11.9 %) and iso-C16 : 0 (7.7 %). The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. The DNA G+C content was 40.2 mol%. According to the 16S rRNA gene sequence, DNA–DNA relatedness and physiological data and the fatty acid composition, CL-MP28T could be assigned to the genus Oceanobacillus, but is distinguishable from the recognized species of this genus. Strain CL-MP28T therefore represents a novel species within the genus Oceanobacillus, for which the name Oceanobacillus profundus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CL-MP28T (=KCCM 42318T=DSM 18246T).

A novel yellow-pigmented, agarolytic bacterial strain, designated ZC1T, was isolated from the surface of the marine red alga Porphyra haitanensis collected near Nan Ao Island, Guangdong province, China. The isolate was Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic and rod-shaped and displayed β-galactosidase, alkaline phosphatase, catalase and oxidase activities. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The major menaquinone was menaquinone 6 (MK-6). The DNA G+C content was 32.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain ZC1T was closely related to members of the genus Aquimarina in the family Flavobacteriaceae , phylum Bacteroidetes . Based on phylogenetic and phenotypic evidence, strain ZC1T ( = CCTCC AB 2010229T  = NBRC 107695T) represents the type strain of a novel species in the genus Aquimarina , for which the name Aquimarina agarilytica sp. nov. is proposed.

A novel filamentous bacterial strain, A-T 5190T, which developed irregular sporangia at the end of sporangiophores on substrate mycelia, was isolated from dry evergreen forest soil collected in Thailand. The 16S rRNA gene sequence and phylogenetic analysis indicated that strain A-T 5190T belonged to the genus Actinoplanes and was related most closely to Actinoplanes palleronii NBRC 14916T (98.88 % similarity) and Actinoplanes rectilineatus NBRC 13941T (98.54 %). DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain A-T 5190T and its closest relatives were below 70 %. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The whole-cell sugars contained rhamnose, ribose, galactose and xylose. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The diagnostic phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol. The predominant cellular fatty acids were unsaturated fatty acid C17 : 1 and branched fatty acids iso-C16 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 71.9 mol%. Evidence from phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic studies indicate that strain A-T 5190T represents a novel species of the genus Actinoplanes, for which the name Actinoplanes luteus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is A-T 5190T ( = BCC 41582T = NBRC 109644T).

A dark-pink-coloured bacterial strain, B4Y-8T, was isolated from a soil cultivated with ginseng. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of this strain showed highest similarity with Mucilaginibacter litoreus BR-18T (96.8 %), Mucilaginibacter lutimaris BR-3T (96.6 %) and Mucilaginibacter defluvii A5T (96.2 %) among the type strains of species of the genus Mucilaginibacter. Strain B4Y-8T was a strictly aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, short-rod-shaped bacterium producing a large amount of extracellular polymeric substance. The strain grew at 10–35 °C (optimum, 25 °C), at pH 3.0–11.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and in the presence of 0–1 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0 %). The DNA G+C content of strain B4Y-8T was 49.0 mol%. It contained menaquinone 7 (MK-7) as the major isoprenoid quinone, and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c) and iso-C15 : 0 as the major fatty acids. On the basis of evidence from the present polyphasic taxonomic study, strain B4Y-8T should be classified as representing a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter, for which the name Mucilaginibacter ginsengisoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is B4Y-8T ( = KACC 18152T = JCM 30759T).

A Gram-stain-positive, non-motile, strictly aerobic, non-spore-forming and short rod-shaped bacterial strain, CL-GY44T, was isolated from coastal seawater, Korea. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain CL-GY44T revealed a clear affiliation with the genus Nocardioides . Based on phylogenetic analysis, strain CL-GY44T showed the closest phylogenetic relationship with Nocardioides ginsengagri BX5-10T and Nocardioides plantarum NCIMB 12834T. Strain CL-GY44T was not able to grow in the presence of NaCl but grew with 0–5.5 % sea salts. The optimum temperature and pH for growth were 30 °C and pH 7.0. The major cellular fatty acids of strain CL-GY44T were C17 : 1ω6c, iso-C16 : 0, C16 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0 and the major menaquinone was MK-8(H4). The cell-wall analysis showed that strain CL-GY44T contained ll-diaminopimelic acid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 71.6 mol%. The combined phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data showed that strain CL-GY44T could be clearly distinguished from members of the genus Nocardioides . Thus, strain CL-GY44T should be classified as representing a novel species in the genus Nocardioides , for which the name Nocardioides marinquilinus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CL-GY44T ( = KCCM 90109T = JCM 18459T).

A phosphate-solubilizing bacterial strain designated OK2T was isolated from rhizospheric soil of grasses growing spontaneously in a soil from Spain. Cells of the strain were Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped and motile. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene indicated that this bacterium belongs to the γ-subclass of Proteobacteria within the genus Pseudomonas and that the closest related species is Pseudomonas graminis. The strain produced catalase but not oxidase. Cellulose, casein, starch, gelatin and urea were not hydrolysed. Aesculin was hydrolysed. Growth was observed with many carbohydrates as carbon sources. The main non-polar fatty acids detected were hexadecenoic acid (16 : 1), hexadecanoic acid (16 : 0) and octadecenoic acid (18 : 1). The hydroxy fatty acids detected were 3-hydroxydecanoic acid (3-OH 10 : 0), 3-hydroxydodecanoic acid (3-OH 12 : 0) and 2-hydroxydodecanoic acid (2-OH 12 : 0). The G+C DNA content determined was 59·3 mol%. DNA–DNA hybridization showed 48·7 % relatedness between strain OK2T and P. graminis DSM 11363T and 26·2 % with respect to Pseudomonas rhizosphaerae LMG 21640T. Therefore, these results indicate that strain OK2T (=LMG 21974T=CECT 5822T) belongs to a novel species of the genus Pseudomonas, and the name Pseudomonas lutea sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-negative-staining, non-motile, non-spore-forming and strictly aerobic bacterial strain, SC35T, was isolated from tidal flat sediment collected from the South Sea, Korea, and subjected to a taxonomic study using a polyphasic approach. The organism grew optimally at 20–30 °C and with 1–2 % (w/v) NaCl. Strain SC35T contained ubiquinone-8 as the predominant respiratory lipoquinone and C18 : 1 ω9c as the major fatty acid. The DNA G+C content was 48.5 mol%. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain SC35T formed a lineage within the genus Psychrobacter (94.3–96.5 % sequence similarity), forming a distinct branch in a clade also containing Psychrobacter pacificensis NIBH P2K6T and Psychrobacter celer SW-238T. On the basis of phenotypic and phylogenetic data, strain SC35T (=KCTC 22503T=JCM 16343T) was placed in the genus Psychrobacter as the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Psychrobacter aestuarii sp. nov. is proposed.

A novel bacterial strain designated CJ70T was isolated from tidal flat sediment in Korea. A polyphasic approach was used to identify this strain taxonomically. The isolate was Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, yellow-pigmented, rod-shaped and non-motile. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain CJ70T was related most closely to Stakelama pacifica JLT832T with 95.7 % similarity and formed an independent phyletic line from recognized species of the genus Sphingomonas , comprising a clade with Stakelama pacifica , which is the only recognized species of the genus Stakelama . The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain CJ70T were C18 : 1ω7c (60.0 %), C16 : 0 (21.2 %) and C14 : 0 2-OH (5.8 %). The major isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone-10. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 61.4 mol%. The results obtained from this study suggested that strain CJ70T represents a novel species of the genus Stakelama , for which the name Stakelama sediminis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CJ70T ( = KACC 16559T = JCM 18079T).

Two moderately halotolerant Gram-negative bacteria were isolated from tidal flat sediment of the South Sea in Korea (the Korea Strait). The strains, designated M9T and M18T, were strictly aerobic, rod-shaped and non-spore-forming and motile with a flagellum and their major fatty acids were C16 : 0 and C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c. Strains M9T and M18T could grow in the presence of up to 13–15 % (w/v) NaCl, but their optimum salt concentrations were relatively low (0–3 %, w/v). The major predominant isoprenoid quinone was Q-8 and the G+C content of the genomic DNA was 57–58 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses and comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence studies revealed that strains M9T and M18T formed a phylogenetic lineage distinct from the genus Teredinibacter within the class Gammaproteobacteria and were most closely related to the genera Microbulbifer, Saccharophagus and Teredinibacter, with less than 92·5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The level of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between the two strains was 96·7 %. On the basis of physiological and phylogenetic properties, strains M9T and M18T represent separate species within a novel genus of the class Gammaproteobacteria, for which the names Marinimicrobium koreense gen. nov., sp. nov. (type species) and Marinimicrobium agarilyticum sp. nov. are proposed. The type strains of Marinimicrobium koreense and Marinimicrobium agarilyticum are M9T (=KCTC 12356T=DSM 16974T) and M18T (=KCTC 12357T=DSM 16975T), respectively.
