There are no data describing the genetic make-up of Campylobacter strains (an important aetiological agent of diarrhoea) circulating in the Arabian Gulf region. Here, the molecular characterization of two virulence genes in Campylobacter jejuni from Bahrain and the relationship with clinical infection are reported. Molecular screening for cytolethal distending toxin (cdtB) and invasion-associated marker (iam) genes was carried out on C. jejuni stool isolates collected from January 2002 to January 2004 in Bahrain. The molecular characterization was correlated with the patients' socio-demographic and clinical parameters. Of the 96 C. jejuni strains tested, 50 (52 %) were cdtB +/iam +, 30 (31 %) were cdtB +/iam − and 16 (17 %) were cdtB −/iam −. Sixty-nine per cent (66/96) of patients were less than 3 years old, with significantly higher detection of cdtB +/iam + and cdtB +/iam − strains (P <0.001 and P <0.01, respectively) in this age group. Seventy patients (73 %) were symptomatic. In the group that were less than 3 years old, 62 and 85 % of those with cdtB +/iam + and cdtB +/iam − strains, respectively, were symptomatic compared with 100 % for those over 3 years of age. However, the presence of cdtB −/iam − strains still resulted in clinical infection in the children under 3 years but not in the older patients. This is the first report describing the molecular characterization of virulence genes in Campylobacter isolates from this region. The findings indicate that strains of different virulence genetic make-up are circulating in the population, with children under the age of 3 years being most vulnerable. Further work on the molecular characterization, gene expression and determination of the invasive phenotypes of C. jejuni strains circulating in different regions is needed.

Transnational education (TNE), responding to the growing global demand for education, plays a fundamental role in the current debate on the internationalisation and globalisation of higher education. Conducting a systematic literature review, this paper examines the characteristics of German transnational education, which has little in common with the American and British models, the reasons for its limited presence in the Gulf and its potential for having a stronger footprint. Since education for Germany is a public good, financial gain has never been a decisive factor for German universities to venture abroad. Whilst the Gulf Region is the largest importer of foreign education, German TNE is only represented by one university there, compared to the overwhelming number of US, UK and Australian higher education institutions. Although the Gulf Region is considered as a lucrative and appealing market for foreign education, lack of engagement of German TNE there could be interpreted through public policy-related reasons. Since Germany has already established its footprint in creating a unique brand of TNE, the paper recommends to build upon the country’s expertise in low-risk option for Germany to invest in the Gulf. For this to materialise, Germany must build awareness of its unique brand to stand out among the competition.

VILAS BÔAS, M. A., MACEDO JUNIOR, E. K. HYDRAULIC CHARACTERIZATION OF MICROSPRINKLER DAN SPRINKLER - MODULATE GROUP   2 ABSTRACT This work had as objective to evaluate the characteristics hydraulic of the microsprinklers of the group to modulate of production of DAN SPRINKLERS - ISRAEL, of recent use in the West of Paraná. The tests was accomplished in the Laboratory of Hydraulics of the Department of Engineering of the State University of the West of Paraná - UNIOESTE. In the evaluation of the microasprinklers it was studied such characteristics as, the variation due to the production process and the determination of the characteristic equation of the relationship vazão-pressure. The microsprinklers of the Group to modulate with diameters of nozzle 0,94; 1,16;1,41;1,92 and 2,34 mm, the pressures were submitted 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 and 350 kPa. The certain characteristic equations showed that the tested microsprinklers is not solemnity-compensante and that the potential equation was fit well to the data. The obtained coefficients of production variation were everybody below 5% being able to not this way to classify them in agreement with for ISO  category as A. KEYWORDS: Microsprinkler, coefficient variation, power function.
