AbstractThe effect of fiber surface treatments on the relationship between the tensile strength of a filament and the shear strength of its interphase is one of the central issues facing composite materials technologists today. We demonstrate here that analysis of fragmentation phenomena in monofilament composites can simultaneously yield information about these two parameters. Characterization of shear stress transfer zones in non-critical fragments has led us to the determination of interphase strength.A phenomenological treatment that highlights the role of the matrix in the fragmentation process is presented here. This analysis considers issues such as the strain energy exchange between a failing fiber and the matrix, as well as interphase relaxation due to the viscoelastic nature of the matrix. Our observations of the fragmentation phenomena in AU4/polycarbonate monofilament composites indicate that the fiber/matrix interaction in this system is governed by micromechanical locking.

The problems associated with the application of FT-IR to the characterization of coal structure are critically discussed. The controversies concerning band assignments are considered and it is concluded that the strong 1600 cm−1 band can be assigned to an aromatic ring stretching mode that in most coals is intensity enhanced by the presence of phenolic groups. The application of computer routines to the determination of OH and CH groups is considered. Established criteria for curve fitting are applied to the problem. Qualitative identification of functional groups is achieved, but consistent quantitative measurements will require a determination of the relationship between the extinction coefficients of resolved bands.

This paper deals with the palaeoenvironmental evolution of the Kitros Pierias Lagoon, located at the west coastline of the Thermaikos Gulf, during the upper Holocene. In addition, the palaeoenvi-ronmental units distinguished in the study area were correlated with the Holocene sea level rise in Thermaikos Gulf. The study is based on the sedimentological and stratigraphical analysis of a core 9.5 m long. Sedimentological and palaeontological analysis was carried out in all selected core sam-ples. The determination of the lithophases and biophases allowed the estimation of the stratigraphy-cal units, the interpretation of the geomorphological evolution and the characterization of the palaeo-environmental conditions. According to the results, we can conclude that the area under investigation was a transitional lagoonal environment, semi-enclosed at its initial stage progressively transformed to an isolated sallow basin. The formation of the semi-enclosed lagoon has been commenced after the conclusion of the rapid phase of sea level rise i.e. 6,000 BP years. Finally, the gradual isolation of the lagoon is attributed to low rate of the sea level rise e.g. over the past 4,000 years..

The experiment was conducted to compare estrous performance between and estradiol level kacang and Nubian goats estrous induction by prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2α). Eight female goats were divided into two groups, groups 1 (K1) consisted five Nubian goats and group 2 (K2) included three kacang goats with criterias as follows: age 1.5-3.0 years old, not pregnant, at least two months postpartum, and healthy clinically. All goats were estrous synchronized by double injection 7,5 mg PGF2α intramuscularly with 10 days interval. Goats that appeared estrus symptoms were mated naturally to a male goat. Determination of estrous intensity was performed using scoring method. Blood samples were taken at the first time the goats were mated (day 0). The measurement of estradiol concentration was done by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Data of intensity, onset, duration, and estradiol level were analyzed using t test. The results showed that the rate of intensity, onset, duration, and estradiol level of estrous at KI vs KII were 2.08±0.52 vs 1.85±0.67, 56.00±34.11 vs 40.80±18.20 hours, and 24.00±26.15 vs 33.80±9.10 hours, and 103.51±42.49 vs 67.95±38.44 pg/ml (P>0,05). It can be concluded there was no difference of estrous performance and estradiol level between kacang and Nubian which estrous induction with PGF2α. The relationship between the intensity of estrus estradiol level in the Nubian goats was 0.995 while the kacang goats was 0.890.

Many Ohio growers import liners from the West Coast due to the increased growing season on the West Coast. Lengthening the season in Ohio may provide a way for Ohio growers to produce liners of their own. Retractable roof greenhouses (RRG) are one possible way to extend the growing season in Ohio. Research done previously at The Ohio State University suggests that retractable roof greenhouses do in fact lengthen the growing season, and tree liners can be produced using RRG. The objectives of this study were: 1) to determine the optimal growing environment from three different environments; and 2) to determine the optimal species for tree liner production in Ohio. In Oct. 2004, 180 liners each of Cladrastis kentuckea, Quercus rubra, Stewartia pseudocamellia, Syringa reticulata, and Tilia cordata were upshifted to 3-gallon pots. In Mar. 2005, 90 of each species were transferred to either a flat roof retractable house (FRRG), peak roof retractable house (PRRG), or polyhouse. Growth was measured in Mar. (initial), June, Aug., and Oct. 2005 by taking leaf area, shoot and root dry weights, height, and caliper. There were no differences across species and dates between the environments for any of the parameters measured. Tilia showed the greatest increase in growth from June to October in all the parameters measured except leaf area. Cladrastis showed the greatest increase in leaf area from June to October. There were species by date interactions. Quercus had the greatest root weight in October. Syringa and Quercus were not significantly different from each other and had the highest shoot weights and leaf areas in October. Tilia, Quercus, and Syringa had the highest calipers in October.

Rakı is a traditional and Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) alcoholic beverage that is distilled from grape distillate with Pimpinella anisum L. in copper pot stills in Turkey. This study focused on the development of a sensory lexicon, a sensory wheel, using a consensus approach and the determination of major volatiles by GC-FID/MS for Rakı. A total of 37 Rakı samples representing all producers were used for volatile and sensory evaluation. The experts identified 78 attributes and references for the lexicon. The main attributes were spicy, anise, sweet, resinous, fruity, dry fruit, floral, head&tail aroma and white colour. The Rakı sensory wheel was created to provide a graphical display of its sensory attributes. For validation of the lexicon, 18 samples were evaluated using descriptive analysis. The results were subjected to PCA to examine the relationship of the samples with the defined sensory attributes. The PCA results show that there is a significant relationship between the Rakı categories and sensory terms and flavour intensities. The GC-MS analyses depicted the following major volatile compounds n-propanol, 2-methyl-1-propanol, 2 and 3-methyl-1-butanol, ethyl-acetate, acetal, acetaldehyde, trans-anethol and estragole. The characterization of the product using its most distinctive sensory descriptors are important tool and can be used for the industry, marketing, consumer education and scientists.

There are no data describing the genetic make-up of Campylobacter strains (an important aetiological agent of diarrhoea) circulating in the Arabian Gulf region. Here, the molecular characterization of two virulence genes in Campylobacter jejuni from Bahrain and the relationship with clinical infection are reported. Molecular screening for cytolethal distending toxin (cdtB) and invasion-associated marker (iam) genes was carried out on C. jejuni stool isolates collected from January 2002 to January 2004 in Bahrain. The molecular characterization was correlated with the patients' socio-demographic and clinical parameters. Of the 96 C. jejuni strains tested, 50 (52 %) were cdtB +/iam +, 30 (31 %) were cdtB +/iam − and 16 (17 %) were cdtB −/iam −. Sixty-nine per cent (66/96) of patients were less than 3 years old, with significantly higher detection of cdtB +/iam + and cdtB +/iam − strains (P <0.001 and P <0.01, respectively) in this age group. Seventy patients (73 %) were symptomatic. In the group that were less than 3 years old, 62 and 85 % of those with cdtB +/iam + and cdtB +/iam − strains, respectively, were symptomatic compared with 100 % for those over 3 years of age. However, the presence of cdtB −/iam − strains still resulted in clinical infection in the children under 3 years but not in the older patients. This is the first report describing the molecular characterization of virulence genes in Campylobacter isolates from this region. The findings indicate that strains of different virulence genetic make-up are circulating in the population, with children under the age of 3 years being most vulnerable. Further work on the molecular characterization, gene expression and determination of the invasive phenotypes of C. jejuni strains circulating in different regions is needed.

Laminated bamboo is a natural composite material with cellulose fibers, parenchyma cells, and vascular bundles. The mechanical characterization of this material includes not only the determination of its strength, but also of its elastic constants. Given the anisotropic nature of the laminated material, compression tests were performed on three groups of specimens. The elastic modulus in the load direction and the Poisson's ratio were determined, and the results showed that the material's physical anisotropy causes an anisotropic mechanical behavior. The average values obtained for the elastic modulus ranged from 30044 MPa for group 1 to 265 MPa for group 2. The results of the test to determine the Poisson's ratio in compression perpendicular to the fibers, ranged from 0.013 to 0.278 whereas those obtained in compression parallel to the fibers, ranged from 0.621 to 1.506.

Aim: To study the relationship between orthostatic hypotension (OH) and arterial stiffness in older fragile adults with arterial hypertension (AH). Material and Methods: The study included 160 patients (77.2 ± 8.1 years) with verified hypertension. The actual intake of previously prescribed drugs was assessed. The patients were divided into three groups: group 1 of patients with frailty, group 2 - with pre-frailty, group 3 of patients without frailty. Arterial stiffness was assessed by volumetric sphygmometry (VaSera-VS-1500 device, FUKUDA DENSHI, Japan) with the determination of the Augmentation index (Aix index). The orthostatic test was considered positive, with a decrease in SBP by 20 and DADA by 10 mm Hg. Art. and more when moving to a vertical position for 1-3 minutes. Results: Orthostatic hypotension was present in 53 patients (33%). Patients with OH did not differ in age from patients without OH (77.9 ± 7.5 years vs. 76.8 ± 8.4 years; p = 0.418). The Aix index is higher in patients with OH, but these differences reach statistical significance only in the group of patients with frailty (11.0 ± 1.2 vs. 10.0 ± 1.6 p = 0.003). When analyzing the antihypertensive drugs taken, there were no significant differences in the total number of drugs within each group and between patients with OH and without OH (p = 0.95). The analysis for individual groups of drugs revealed an inverse relationship between the use of ACE inhibitors and OH in the group as a whole (ϕ = -0.205, p = 0.010), and in the group of patients with frailty, marginal significance (ϕ = -0.266, p = 0.05). Findings: OH is observed in 33% of patients 60 years and older with hypertension. Arterial stiffness increases with increasing “fragility” and concomitant OH in the group of patients 60 years and older. The progression of arterial stiffness in older adults is heterogeneous and depends on concomitant frailty.

Echinodermata is a phylum of marine invertebrates which has been extant since Cambrian time (c.a. 500 m.y. before the present). Modern examples of echinoderms include sea urchins, sea stars, and sea lilies (crinoids). The endoskeletons of echinoderms are composed of plates or ossicles (Fig. 1) which are with few exceptions, porous, single crystals of high-magnesian calcite. Despite their single crystal nature, fracture surfaces do not exhibit the near-perfect {10.4} cleavage characteristic of inorganic calcite. This paradoxical mix of biogenic and inorganic features has prompted much recent work on echinoderm skeletal crystallography. Furthermore, fossil echinoderm hard parts comprise a volumetrically significant portion of some marine limestones sequences. The ultrastructural and microchemical characterization of modern skeletal material should lend insight into: 1). The nature of the biogenic processes involved, for example, the relationship of Mg heterogeneity to morphological and structural features in modern echinoderm material, and 2). The nature of the diagenetic changes undergone by their ancient, fossilized counterparts. In this study, high resolution TEM (HRTEM), high voltage TEM (HVTEM), and STEM microanalysis are used to characterize tha ultrastructural and microchemical composition of skeletal elements of the modern crinoid Neocrinus blakei.
