Cryptic species are closely related taxa that are difficult to separate morphologically, but are reproductively isolated. Here we examine the warbling vireo complex (Vireo gilvus), a widespread songbird speculated to be comprised of more than one cryptic species. We included three taxa within the complex: two of the western (Vireo gilvus swainsonii and Vireo gilvus brewsteri) subspecies and the single eastern (Vireo gilvus gilvus) subspecies. We used mtDNA and microsatellite loci to assess the congruence of genetic data to the current subspecies boundaries. We then incorporated bioacoustic, morphometric, and ecological niche modeling analyses to further examine differences. We found two genetic groups with mtDNA analysis. Microsatellite analyses revealed four genetic groups: an eastern group, a Black Hills group and two western groups that do not agree with current western subspecies boundaries based on phenotypic data. Our results suggest that eastern and western warbling vireos have been reproductively isolated for a long period of time and therefore, may be best treated as separate species; however, more research into areas of contact to examine the presence of hybridization is advised before making a taxonomic revision. Differences between the two western genetic groups appear less clear, requiring additional research.

AbstractThe conservation status of threatened taxa may be obfuscated by the detection of cryptic species complexes, in both vertebrate and invertebrate species. African dwarf crocodiles (Osteolaemusspp.) are hunted throughout their range but their conservation status is unknown. Few population assessments have been carried out and there has been a taxonomic revision of the number of species in the genus. The similar morphologies ofOsteolaemus tetraspisandOsteolaemus osbornipose a challenge for conservation in Cameroon, where they are still managed as a single species. Nocturnal spotlight surveys were conducted in three regions during August–November 2010 and December 2011–February 2012 to provide population assessments ofO. tetraspisandO. osborniand raise awareness of the two species in Cameroon. The mean encounter rates ofO. tetraspisandO. osborniwere 1.02 ± SD 1.34 (65 individuals in 39 surveys) and 0.61 ± SD 0.38 (three in four surveys) crocodiles per km, respectively. TheO. tetraspispopulation comprised juveniles predominantly and had a male-biased sex ratio. The fewO. osbornidetected comprised both adults and juveniles. Both species are threatened in Cameroon, based on low encounter rates, young population structures and the threats of habitat loss and hunting pressure. This study provides distribution maps and serves as a baseline to quantify population trends and inform conservation strategies.

ABSTRACT Isolates of the causal ascomycete of grapevine powdery mildew, Erysiphe necator, correspond to two genetically differentiated groups (A and B) that coexist on the same host. This coexistence was analyzed by investigating temporal changes in the genetic and phenotypic structures of E. necator populations during three epidemics. Group A was present only at the start of the growing season, whereas group B was present throughout all three epidemics. Group A was less aggressive in terms of germination and infection efficiency but was more aggressive than group B in terms of the latency period, lesion diameter, and spore production. Our results are consistent with a temporal differentiation of niches, preventing recombination, and suggest an association between the disease level and the frequencies of genetic groups.

The study aimed to compare two grouping strategies for unknown parents or phantom parent groups (PPG) on the genetic evaluation of growth traits for Mexican Braunvieh cattle. Phenotypic data included birth (BW), weaning (WW) and yearling (YW) weights. Pedigree included 57,341 animals. The first strategy involved 12 PPG (G12) based on the birth year of the unknown parent’s progeny and the sex of the unknown parent, while the second involved 24 PPG (G24) based on the birth year of the unknown parent’s progeny and 4-selection pathways. The animal models included fixed effects and the random direct additive genetic effect; WW also included random maternal genetic and maternal permanent environmental effects. Product-moment correlations between EBV from G0 (no PPG) and G12 were 0.96, 0.77 and 0.69 for BW, WW and YW, respectively, and between EBV from G0 and G24 were 0.91, 0.54, and 0.53, respectively. Corresponding rank correlations between G0 and G12 were 0.94, 0.77, and 0.72, and between G0 and G24 were 0.89, 0.61, and 0.60. Genetic trends showed a base deviation from the genetic trend of G0, except for BW of G12. The results did not support the use of the two grouping strategies on the studied population and traits, and further research is required. Introducing PPG to the model, enough phenotype contribution from descendants to PPG, and avoiding collinearity between PPG and fixed effects are important. Genetic groups should reflect changes in the genetic structure of the population to the unknown parents, including different sources of genetic materials, and changes made by selection over time.

Abstract Chaetodipus nelsoni occurs on rocky substrates across the Mexican Altiplano. We investigated phylogeographic diversity within the species using morphologic, karyotypic, and molecular data. Data from nuclear (AFLP) and mitochondrial DNA support three distinct genetic groups with minimal substructuring coincident with biogeographic barriers previously identified in the Chihuahuan Desert and drainage basins of the Altiplano. We examined the morphological and karyotypic data in light of the molecular data. The results support recognition of three species within the currently accepted widespread C. nelsoni: 1) C. nelsoni restricted to a distribution centered on the El Salado River Basin; 2) elevation of C. n. collis to species, with two subspecies: one centered on Trans-Pecos Texas, the other on the Mapimí Basin (new subspecies); and 3) recognition of a new species, C. durangae, centered on the Nazas Basin and upper Río Mezquital drainage.

Allozyme variation at 36 loci was screened in 179 individuals of the Litoria lesueuri species group from 33 locations from across the species' range in eastern Australia. We identified three genetic groups, with discrete and disjunct distributions, that we consider to be separate species. The northernmost group, L.�jungguy, sp. nov., had a distinctive standard and C-band karyotype, while the karyotypes of the two southern groups, L. lesueuri (Duméril & Bibron, 1841) and L. wilcoxii Gunther, 1864, differed only in minor details of their C-band patterns. Stepwise discriminant function analysis of morphometric variation among 13 meristic variables was able to discriminate L. lesueuri and L. wilcoxii in 100% of cases but discrimination between L. wilcoxii and L. jungguy was less successful, with 75% and 56% of each group respectively being correctly classified. Locations with inter-group hybrids were identified in the Australian Capital Territory, mid-east Queensland and two localities in far north Queensland. However, each of the groups has a large geographic range within which there was relative allozyme and karyotype uniformity. On the basis of the genetic data, each group is herein elevated to species status. Existing types were assigned to their respective genetic groups on the basis of a discriminant function analysis. Formal taxonomic accounts are provided. The closely related L. booroolongensis (Moore, 1961), sole member of the L.�booroolongensis species group, differed allozymically from all three species of the L. lesueuri species group but only from the northern species in its karyotype. Small genetic distances between L.�booroolongensis and members of the L. lesueuri species group indicate a close relationship for the two species groups.

A taxonomic revision of Sabicea subgenus Anisophyllae (Rubiaceae), a group restricted to Central and East Africa, is presented here. This work, based on a study of herbarium specimens and field observations in Cameroon and Gabon, includes a survey of the morphological features of the group, a key to the species, descriptions of all the taxa, and IUCN conservation status assessments. Fifteen species are recognised, four of which are described as new (Sabicea mapiana, S. ndjoleensis, S. parmentierae, S. sciaphilantha), three former varieties are raised to species rank (S. crystallina, S. jacfelicis, S. tersifolia), and one species previously sunk into synonymy is restored (S. bequaertii). Two new infraspecific taxa are also described, Sabicea crystallina subsp. engongensis and S. sciaphilantha subsp. hirsuta. The group has its center of diversity in Gabon, where 10 of the 15 species occur, three of them being endemic to the country.
