AbstractEngineering and manipulation of unidirectional channels has been achieved in quantum Hall systems, leading to the construction of electron interferometers and proposals for low-power electronics and quantum information science applications. However, to fully control the mixing and interference of edge-state wave functions, one needs stable and tunable junctions. Encouraged by recent material candidates, here we propose to achieve this using an antiferromagnetic topological insulator that supports two distinct types of gapless unidirectional channels, one from antiferromagnetic domain walls and the other from single-height steps. Their distinct geometric nature allows them to intersect robustly to form quantum point junctions, which then enables their control by magnetic and electrostatic local probes. We show how the existence of stable and tunable junctions, the intrinsic magnetism and the potential for higher-temperature performance make antiferromagnetic topological insulators a promising platform for electron quantum optics and microelectronic applications.

We report on comparison between temperature-dependent magneto¬absorption and magnetotransport spectroscopy of HgTe/CdHgTe quantum wells in terms of detection of phase transition between topological insulator and band insulator states. Our results demonstrate that temperature-dependent magnetospectroscopy is a powerful tool to discriminate trivial and topological insulator phases, yet magnetotransport method is shown to have advantages for clear manifestation of the phase transition with accurate quantitative values of transition parameter (i.e. critical magnetic field Bc).

Magnetoresistance and Hall resistance measurements have been carried out in the FISDW phase of deuterated (TMTSF)2C1O4 for various cooling rates through the anion ordering temperature. The Hall resistance in the intermediate cooled state, observed a very stable quantum Hall state above 9.0 T for slowly cooled, shows a step-like change from the phase between 10 and 17 T to the phase between 20 and 25 T with hysteresis between 14 and 21 T. This result suggests that there is a new phase transition around 15 T in deuterated (TMTSF)4ClO4. A possible ground state of the FISDW phase of (TMTSF)2C1O4 for various cooling rates is discussed from the viewpoint of the peculiar SDW nesting vector stabilized by the dimerized gap due to anion ordering.
