The paper reflects on the usefulness of the alloy design methodology NICE (Niobium Intermetallic Composite Elaboration) for the development of new Nb-containing metallic ultra-high-temperature materials (UHTMs), namely refractory metal (Nb) intermetallic composites (RM(Nb)ICs), refractory high entropy alloys (RHEAs) and refractory complex concentrated alloys (RCCAs), in which the same phases can be present, specifically bcc solid solution(s), M5Si3 silicide(s) and Laves phases. The reasons why a new alloy design methodology was sought and the foundations on which NICE was built are discussed. It is shown that the alloying behavior of RM(Nb)ICs, RHEAs and RCCAs can be described by the same parameters. The practicality of parameter maps inspired by NICE for describing/understanding the alloying behavior and properties of alloys and their phases is demonstrated. It is described how NICE helps the alloy developer to understand better the alloys s/he develops and what s/he can do and predict (calculate) with NICE. The paper expands on RM(Nb)ICs, RHEAs and RCCAs with B, Ge or Sn, the addition of which and the presence of A15 compounds is recommended in RHEAs and RCCAs to achieve a balance of properties.

This works deals with the deposition of Ti-Zr-Ni icosahedral quasicrystalline powders by low vacuum plasma spray technique and the performances of the resulting coating layers. The microstructure of the coatings, as analyzed by X-ray diffraction and TEM techniques, consisted of nanometer-sized W-Ti50Zr35Ni15 1/1 cubic approximant and TiZrNi Laves phases as well as a low volume fraction of submicrometer-sized ZrO2 phase. The absence of the icosahedral phase in the coating layers was explained by the loss of Ti during plasma spraying. The shift in the composition and the presence of the ZrO2 phase within the coating layers are believed to be responsible for the reduced microhardness and corrosion performances evaluated by electrochemical tests in a Hanks’ Balance Salt Solution at 37oC.

The effects of the solution heat treatment temperature on the precipitates, grain boundary evolution and response of the microhardness of Inconel 718 (IN718) superalloy fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) were investigated. It was found that: (1) The long-chained Laves phases formed in the as-deposited condition dissolved into the matrix when the solution temperature rises above 980 °C. (2) The width-to-length ratio was maintained at approximately 1.6 when the solution was heated from 980 °C to 1080 °C, and dropped down to 1.03 when heated to 1130 °C. (3) Low-angle grain boundaries kept the same number fraction of 65% from 980 to 1080 °C as the as-deposited condition, and decreased dramatically from 1090 to 1130 °C to 4%. (4) Annealing twin boundaries occurred at 1090 °C with a number fraction of 3%, and quickly increased to 65% when heated to 1130 °C. It is concluded that the static recrystallization of IN718 fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) occurred at 1090 °C and fast proceeded to full recrystallization at 1130 °C. The forming of annealing twins accompanies the recrystallization process and is an effective way to refine the recrystallized grain size.
