Organic ligands and counter-anions influence the coordination spheres of metal cations and hence the construction of coordination polymers (CPs). The specific bent geometries of five-membered heterocyclic triazole bridging organic ligands are capable of generating CPs with novel patterns not easily obtained using rigid linear ligands. A multidentate 4-aminotriazole-bridged organic ligand, namely 4-amino-3,5-bis(4,3′-bipyridyl-5′-yl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole (L) has been prepared and used to synthesize two CoII coordination polymers, namely poly[[[μ2-4-amino-3,5-bis(4,3′-bipyridyl-5′-yl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole-κ2 N:N′]bis(methanol-κO)cobalt(II)] bis(perchlorate)], {[Co(C22H16N8)2(CH3OH)2](ClO4)2} n , (I), and poly[[μ3-4-amino-3,5-bis(4,3′-bipyridyl-5′-yl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole-κ3 N:N′:N′′]dichloridocobalt(II)], [CoCl2(C22H16N8)] n , (II), using CoX 2 salts [X = ClO4 for (I) and Cl for (II)] under solvothermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray structure analysis revealed that they both feature two-dimensional networks. Cobalt is located on an inversion centre in (I) and in a general position in (II). In (I), L functions as a bidentate cis-conformation ligand linking CoII ions, while it functions as a tridentate trans-conformation linker binding CoII ions in (II). In addition, O—H...N and N—H...O hydrogen bonds and C—H...π interactions exist in (I), while N—H...Cl and π–π interactions exist in (II), and these weak interactions play an important role in aligning the two-dimensional nets of (I) and (II) in the solid state. As the compounds were synthesized under the same conditions, the significant structural variations between (I) and (II) are believed to be determined by the different sizes and coordination abilities of the counter-anions. IR spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance UV–Vis spectra were also used to investigate the title compounds.

AbstractBased on 2-(4-pyridyl)-terephthalate (H2pta) and oxalate ligands, two new lanthanide-containing coordination polymers (CPs), [Tb(pta)(C2O4)0.5(H2O)2)]·2H2O (1) and [Sm(pta)(C2O4)0.5(H2O)2)]·2H2O (2), have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. The structures of both 1 and 2 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Infrared, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis data are also presented. The crystals of 1 and 2 exhibit isostructural layer-like networks, crystallizing in the triclinic space group P$‾{1}$. The layers are further stabilized and associated into 3D architectures through hydrogen bonding. Remarkably, the CPs 1 and 2 exhibit excellent water stability and remarkable thermostability with thermal decomposition temperatures of more than 420 °C.

In poly[[μ4-1,4-bis(pyridazin-4-yl)benzene-1:2:3:4κ4N1:N2:N1′:N2′]di-μ2-chlorido-dicopper(I)], [Cu2Cl2(C14H10N4)]n, (I), and its isomorphous bromide analogue, [Cu2Br2(C14H10N4)]n, (II), the organic ligand is situated across a centre of inversion. The CuIcations adopt a distorted tetrahedral [CuN2X2] [X= Cl in (I) or Br in (II)] environment [Cu—N = 2.0183 (14)–2.0936 (14) Å; Cu—Cl = 2.2686 (6) and 2.4241 (5) Å; Cu—Br = 2.4002 (6) and 2.5284 (5) Å] and the primary coordination motif consists of cuprohalogenide chains accommodating μ-pyridazine groups. The organic ligands are tetradentate and link the inorganic chains into corrugated layers. Their packing is influenced by interlayer anion...π interactions [Cl...π = 3.540 (2) Å and Br...π = 3.593 (2) Å] with the electron-deficient pyridazine rings. This kind of interaction precludes the characteristic slipped π–π stacking and close parallel alignment of the organic tectons; it may be involved as a structure-defining factor for coordination layers based upon lengthy polyaromatic linkers.

The title compounds,catena-poly[[[bis[(R)-propane-1,2-diamine-κ2N,N′]copper(II)]-μ-cyanido-κ2N:C-[tris(cyanido-κC)(nitroso-κN)iron(III)]-μ-cyanido-κ2C:N] monohydrate], {[Cu(Lpn)2][Fe(CN)5(NO)]·H2O}n, (I), and poly[[hexa-μ-cyanido-κ12C:N-hexacyanido-κ6C-hexakis[(R)-propane-1,2-diamine-κ2N,N′]dichromium(III)tricopper(II)] pentahydrate], {[Cu(Lpn)2]3[Cr(CN)6]2·5H2O}n, (II) [where Lpn = (R)-propane-1,2-diamine, C3H10N2], are new chiral cyanide-bridged bimetallic coordination polymers. The asymmetric unit of compound (I) is composed of two independent cation–anion units of {[Cu(Lpn)2][Fe(CN)5)(NO)]} and two water molecules. The FeIIIatoms have distorted octahedral geometries, while the CuIIatoms can be considered to be pentacoordinate. In the crystal, however, the units align to form zigzag cyanide-bridged chains propagating along [101]. Hence, the CuIIatoms have distorted octahedral coordination spheres with extremely long semicoordination Cu—N(cyanido) bridging bonds. The chains are linked by O—H...N and N—H...N hydrogen bonds, forming two-dimensional networks parallel to (010), and the networks are linkedviaN—H...O and N—H...N hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional framework. Compound (II) is a two-dimensional cyanide-bridged coordination polymer. The asymmetric unit is composed of two chiral {[Cu(Lpn)2][Cr(CN)6]}−anions bridged by a chiral [Cu(Lpn)2]2+cation and five water molecules of crystallization. Both the CrIIIatoms and the central CuIIatom have distorted octahedral geometries. The coordination spheres of the outer CuIIatoms of the asymmetric unit can be considered to be pentacoordinate. In the crystal, these units are bridged by long semicoordination Cu—N(cyanide) bridging bonds forming a two-dimensional network, hence these CuIIatoms now have distorted octahedral geometries. The networks, which lie parallel to (10-1), are linkedviaO—H...O, O—H...N, N—H...O and N—H...N hydrogen bonds involving all five non-coordinating water molecules, the cyanide N atoms and the NH2groups of the Lpn ligands, forming a three-dimensional framework.

In recent years, much initial interest and enthusiasm has focused on the self-assembly of coordination polymers due to the aesthetics of their crystalline architectures and their potential applications as new functional materials. As part of an exploration of chiral coordination polymers, a new twofold interpenetrated two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer, namely, poly[[tetraaquabis[μ3-(2R,2′R)-2,2′-(benzene-1,4-dicarboxamido)dipropionato-κ5 O,O′:O′′,O′′′:O′′]dicadmium(II)] trihydrate], {[Cd2(C14H14N2O6)2(H2O)4]·3H2O} n , has been synthesized by the reaction of Cd(CH3COO)2·2H2O with the designed ligand (2R,2′R)-2,2′-(benzene-1,4-dicarboxamido)dipropionic acid (H2 L). The compound has been structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In the crystal structure, each CdII cation binds to three carboxylate groups from two crystallographically independent L 2− dianions. Four carboxylate groups link two crystallographically independent cadmium cations into a 4,4-connected secondary building unit (SBU). The resulting SBUs are extended into a two-dimensional folding sheet via the terephthalamide moiety of the ligand as a spacer, which can be simplified as a (4,4)-connected 4,4L15 net with the point symbol (3.53.62)(32.52.62). In the lattice, two independent folding sheets interpenetrate each other to yield a double-sheet layer. The resulting 2D layers pack in parallel arrays through intermolecular hydrogen bonds and interlayer π–π interactions. The thermal stability and photoluminescence properties of the title compound have been investigated and it exhibits an enhanced fluorescence emission and a longer lifetime compared with free H2 L.

Three new inorganic–organic coordination polymers based on a versatile linking unit 2-(1H-imidazole-1-yl)acetate (Hima) and divalent Mn(ii), Ni(ii), and Cu(ii) ions, exhibiting two kinds of two dimensionalities with different topological structures, have been prepared in water medium and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Reaction of MnCl2·4H2O and Ni(NO3)2·6H2O with Hima yielded neutral two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymers [M(ima)2]n, M = Mn(ii) 1, and Ni(ii) 2 with isostructural 2D coordination polymers possessing (3,6) topology structures, which further stack into three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular networks through C–H···O weak interactions. However, when Cu(NO3)2·4H2O was used, a neutral 2D coordination polymer [Cu(ima)2]n 3 consisting of rhombus units was generated, which showed a 3D supramolecular network through C–H···O weak interactions. Among these polymers, the building block ima anion exhibits different coordination modes. These results indicate that the versatile nature of this flexible ligand, together with the coordination preferences of the metal ions, plays a critical role in construction of these novel coordination polymers. Spectral and thermal properties of these new materials have also been investigated.

Four new different porous crystalline Cd(II)-based coordination polymers (CPs), i. e., [Cd(mdpt)2]·2H2O (1), [Cd2(mdpt)2(m-bdc)(H2O)2] (2), [Cd(Hmdpt)(p-bdc)]·2H2O (3), and [Cd3(mdpt)2(bpdc)2]·2.5NMP (4), were obtained successfully by the assembly of Cd(II) ions and bitopic 3-(3-methyl-2-pyridyl)-5-(4-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole (Hmdpt) in the presence of various benzendicarboxylate ligands, i.e., 1,3/1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (m-H2bdc, p-H2bdc) and biphenyl-4,4′-bicarboxylate (H2bpdc). Herein, complex 1 is a porous 2-fold interpenetrated four-connected 3D NbO topological framework based on the mdpt− ligand; 2 reveals a two-dimensional (2D) hcb network. Interestingly, 3 presents a three-dimensional (3D) rare interpenetrated double-insertion supramolecular net via 2D ···ABAB··· layers and can be viewed as an fsh topological net, while complex 4 displays a 3D sqc117 framework. Then, the different gas sorption performances were carried out carefully for complexes 1 and 4, the results of which showed 4 has preferable sorption than that of 1 and can be the potential CO2 storage and separation material. Furthermore, the stability and luminescence of four complexes were performed carefully in the solid state.

Coordination polymers constructed from conjugated organic ligands and metal ions with a d 10 electronic configuration exhibit intriguing properties for chemical sensing and photochemistry. A ZnII-based coordination polymer, namely poly[aqua(μ6-biphenyl-3,3′,5,5′-tetracarboxylato)(μ2-4,4′-bipyridine)dizinc(II)], [Zn2(C16H6O8)(C10H8N2)(H2O)2] n or [Zn2(m,m-bpta)(4,4′-bipy)(H2O)2] n , was synthesized from a mixture of biphenyl-3,3′,5,5′-tetracarboxylic acid [H4(m,m-bpta)], 4,4′-bipyridine (4,4′-bipy) and Zn(NO3)2·6H2O under solvothermal conditions. The title complex has been structurally characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction analysis, and features a μ6-coordination mode. The ZnII ions adopt square-pyramidal geometries and are bridged by two syn–syn carboxylate groups to form [Zn2(COO)2] secondary buildding units (SBUs). The SBUs are crosslinked by (m,m-bpta)4− ligands to produce a two-dimensional grid-like layer that exhibits a stair-like structure along the a axis. Adjacent layers are linked by 4,4′-bipy ligands to form a three-dimensional network with a {44.610.8}{44.62} topology. In the solid state, the complex displays a strong photoluminescence and an excellent solvent stability. In addition, the luminescence sensing results indicate a highly selective and sensitive sensing for Fe3+ ions.

Two coordination polymers with two-dimensional and three-dimensional structures are, {[Zn3(bdc)3(py)2]·2NMP}n (1) (H2bdc = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid) and [Zn2(NO3−)(btc)(nmp)2(py)]n (2) (H3btc = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid), synthesized by hot-solution reactions of Zn(NO3)2·6H2O, pyridine (py) and two different ligands in N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). {[Zn3(bdc)3(py)2]·2NMP}n exhibits two-dimensional networks with trizinc subunits [Zn3(COO)6py2] stacking with a layer-by-layer alignment, and there are strong π–π interactions involving py from adjacent layers. [Zn2(NO3−)(btc)(nmp)2(py)]n has a three-dimensional structure containing two independent zinc ions, tetrahedral ZnO4 and octahedral ZnNO5. Based on X-ray studies, the coordination polymers {[Zn3(bdc)3(py)2]·2NMP}n (1) have a porous structure with NMP guest molecules. In contrast, X-ray studies revealed that coordination polymer [Zn2(NO3−)(btc)(nmp)2(py)]n (2) had a larger void that was inhabited by coordinated py and NMP. In addition, the form of the two coordination polymers changed from two-dimensional to three-dimensional with transformation of the ligand geometry.
