PurposeThe main purpose of this study is to link work‐family conflict, quality of work and non‐work lives, quality of life and social support (supervisor and spouse supports). Specifically, it seeks to address three different roles of social support that have theoretical and empirical support and the mediating roles of quality of work life and quality of non‐work life.Design/methodology/approachThe SEM‐based approach has been used to study supervisor and spouse supports as moderators between work‐family conflict and quality of life; independent variables of work‐family conflict; independent variables of quality of life. The study has been carried out in Malaysia.FindingsThe main findings are: work‐family conflict has relationship with quality of life; quality of work life and non‐work life are “partial” mediators between work‐family conflict and quality of life; and, among the various roles of social support, its role as an independent variable of quality of life gives the best results.Research limitations/implicationsThe research is based on a cross‐sectional study conducted in Malaysia and addresses only the spouse and supervisor supports as components of social support.Originality/valueThe research has developed a comprehensive model linking work‐family conflict, quality of work and non‐work lives, and quality of life and has studied the role of social support.

Background: This study aimed to model the relationship between occupational accidents, work-family conflict, and quality of work-life in emergency room nurses. Materials and Methods: This correlational research uses path analysis. The study population consisted of all nurses working in the emergency rooms of hospitals in Tehran City, Iran, in 2020. Of them, 200 samples were selected by the available sampling method. To obtain the data, we used the occupational accidents questionnaire, the quality of work-life questionnaire, and the work-family conflict scale. SPSS v. 24 and Amos v. 24 software were used for data analysis. Results: The analysis of the findings showed that occupational accidents and work-family conflict have a negative and direct effect on the quality of work-life (P<0.01). Occupational accidents also have a positive and direct effect on work-family conflict (P<0.01). On the other hand, the mediating role of work-family conflict between occupational accidents and quality of work-life was confirmed (P<0.01). Conclusion: The relationship model of occupational accidents with quality of work-life mediated by work-family conflict has a good fit, and there is a relationship between family, job, and environmental stressors with the quality of work-life.

This study examines the relationship between work-family conflict and the quality of work life among nurses in the city of Medan. The author hypothesized that higher level of work-family conflict would be associated with lower quality of work life. Participants were 105 female nurses from the city of Medan. We obtained the data using a questionnaire that measures work-family conflict and quality of work life. We analyzed the data using SPSS 17. The results showed a negative relationship between work-family conflict and quality of work life. Female nurses with higher work-family conflicts tended to have lower quality of work-life than those with lower work-family conflicts. Studi ini meneliti hubungan antara work-family conflict dengan quality of work life. Dihipotesiskan bahwa peningkatan work-family conflict akan diikuti dengan penurunan quality of work life. Partisipan penelitian adalah 105 perawat berjenis kelamin perempuan di kota Medan. Data diperoleh melalui kuesioner yang mengukur work-family conflict dan quality of work life. Data dianalisis menggunakan SPSS 17. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan hubungan negatif antara work-family conflict dengan quality of work life. Perawat dengan work-family conflict yang tinggi cenderung memiliki quality of work life yang rendah.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper was to attempt to understand the effects of gender, masculinity-femininity and social support from three sources (supervisor, co-worker and family) on the quality of work life (QWL) of an employee. In addition, the paper tried to explore the moderating effects of gender and social support in the relationship between masculinity-femininity and QWL. Relevant background variables such as age, marital status, parental status and sector have been included as control variables in the study. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected from a sample of 307 bank employees in India (208 males and 99 females) working in private and public sector banks using the purposive sampling technique. Prior permission was obtained from the relevant authorities. To test the hypotheses, t-tests and hierarchical regression analyses were performed. In addition, the Baron and Kenny (1986) approach was used to test the moderating effects of gender and social support in the relationship between masculinity-femininity and QWL. Findings – Masculinity-femininity was not found to be significant predictor of QWL, while gender emerged as a significant predictor of QWL. Also, gender moderated the relationship between masculinity-femininity and QWL. All three sources of social support significantly predicted QWL. Results of t-test showed that female employees experienced better QWL than male employees. Furthermore, supervisory category employees and parent employees reported significantly better QWL than non-supervisory and non-parent employees. Practical implications – The key implication for organisations is that employees with both masculine and feminine tendencies are required to strike a balance between goal orientation and people orientation within the company. Also, employees should understand that their gender as well as their individual orientations towards masculinity or femininity will affect the dynamics of any interaction. Hence, being aware of the tendencies that are typical of their gender role orientations both while dealing with themselves as well as while dealing with customers, colleagues or supervisors would help in improving the quality of their work, as well as their QWL, especially in customer service professions. Originality/value – This is one of the few studies that have tried to answer the “why” part of gender differences in QWL. In addition, this study contributes to an understanding of the relative importance of different sources of social support in improving an employee's QWL. Finally, this is the first study to understand the relationship between masculinity-femininity, social support, gender and QWL in the Indian context, where the overall cultural orientation towards gender roles is currently changing.

Desta forma, conclui-se que se torna inviável garantir a qualidade vida no trabalho genuína diante do processo de intensificação laboraABSTRACTThis essay aims to contribute to the debate about the possibility of achieving the concept of quality of work life (QWL) in face of the labor intensification process that is taking place in contemporary times. Through literature review of researches that deal with the effects of labor intensification on workers, this article reveals that, although companies seek to promote QWL through policies and practices aimed to improve worker satisfaction, the mechanisms of work intensification adopted to increase productivity generate results in the opposite direction to those desired by QWL policies. Thus, it is concluded that becomes unfeasible to guarantee genuine quality of work life in face of the labor intensification process. Keywords: Work Intensification, Quality of Work Life, Work-family Conflict.

PurposeBased on the conservation of resources (COR) theory (Hobfoll, 1989, 2002), this study first investigates the direct influence of core self-evaluations (CSEs) on work-to-family (W → F) and family-to-work (F → W) conflicts. Second, it tests the mediating impact of Social support from work and home domains in the associations between CSEs and both directions of work-family conflict. This study finally examines the moderating influence of CSEs in the associations between work and home domain social support and both directions of work-family conflict.Design/methodology/approachHuman resources professionals (629), and engineers (169) employed in Canada completed an online survey. Both directions of work-family conflict were measured as well as CSEs, and work and home domain social support.FindingsResults indicate that higher CSEs are associated with lower W → F and F → W conflicts. They also suggest an indirect association between CSEs and W → F conflict through supervisor support. The indirect association between CSEs and F → W conflict through home domain social support was also supported. Besides, it appears that CSEs moderate the association between home support and F → W conflict.Research limitations/implicationsOur findings underscore the relevance of considering both dispositional and environmental factors together in work-life research. Results question within- vs. cross-domain conceptualizations of work-life spillover. They also indicate how both differential choice and effectiveness operate in conjunction with managing work-life domains.Originality/valueThe research presents a comprehensive model linking work-family conflict, social support and CSEs. It draws from an integrative personality framework (Judge et al., 1998) and COR theory (Hobfoll, 1989) to explore the underlying processes of CSEs, often inferred but not specified or incorporated into work-life research.

This study examines the roles of psychological capital (PsyCap) in job performance and quality of work life (QWL) of marketers in a transitioning market, Vietnam. It also investigates the impacts of marketers’ QWL on their job performance and quality of life (QoL). A test based upon a sample of 364 marketers in Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City reveals that PsyCap has positive impacts on both job performance and QWL of marketers. In addition, QWL underlies both job performance and QoL of marketers. These findings confirm the importance of PsyCap in marketers’ work and lives in a transitioning market.
