Does independent goal interdependence impair dynamic capability? The mediating role of supplier integration and the moderating role of internal integration

PurposeRapidly changing technological and marketing environments challenge the survival of business organizations. Developing dynamic capability is critical in helping companies respond to today's turbulent environments. Thus, fruitful studies on the antecedents of dynamic capability have been conducted. However, in the context of the supply chain, little is known about the factors that can be harmful to dynamic capability. Drawing on the theory of cooperation and competition, the first purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between independent goal interdependence with suppliers and dynamic capability by focusing on the mediating role of supplier integration. Combining the information processing theory and transaction cost economics with the theory of cooperation and competition, the second purpose of this study is to discuss and test the moderating role of internal integration.Design/methodology/approachUsing a carefully designed questionnaire, a large-scale survey was employed to collect data in China. The senior manager (e.g. president, vice president, chief executive officer [CEO], executive or purchasing manager) of each company was asked to participate in our survey. The final valid sample in our survey consisted of 233 companies. Hierarchical multiple regression statistical analysis and bias-corrected bootstrapping methods were applied to test the correlation, mediation, moderation and moderated mediation relationships between variables.FindingsThe authors found that independent goal interdependence negatively influences dynamic capability through frustrating supplier integration. In addition, the moderated mediation model analysis shows that internal integration weakens the positive direct effect of supplier integration on dynamic capability while neutralizing the negative indirect effect of independent goal interdependence on dynamic capability. The theoretical and managerial implications of these results are discussed.Originality/valueFirst, starting from the goal interdependence and supply chain management perspectives, this research not only is consistent with remote theoretical research that explains why interdependence among organizations influences the capability to enhance competitive advantage but also incorporates relevant internal and external factors that influence dynamic capability. Second, by proposing an innovative boundary factor – internal integration – this study also contributes to adjusting the predictions of the theory of cooperation and competition. Third, focusing specifically on the negative antecedent of dynamic capability can provide a better understanding of the antecedents that cause companies to have weakened dynamic capability.

Purpose Based on the human resource (HR) and supply chain integration (SCI) literature, this paper aims to argue that high-involvement human resource practices (HIHRP) work as a complementary capability for SCI, and thus, HIHRP moderates the relationship between SCI and firm productivity. This moderating role is analyzed through the following HIHRP dimensions, namely, ability-enhancing, motivation-enhancing and opportunity-enhancing practices framework. Design/methodology/approach Using empirical data collected from a survey of the agri-food sector (horticultural firms of southern Spain), the moderating effects of HIHRP on the relationship between supply chain external integrations (with customers and suppliers) and productivity are examined. Hierarchical regression analysis is used to test the proposed hypotheses. Findings The results support that HIHRP has a moderating effect on the SCI/productivity relationship. However, these results are only significant in the case of supplier integration. Originality/value This study analyzes HIHRP as a complementary asset in the context of SCI and makes both theoretical and managerial contributions to the SCI literature by empirically analyzing the role of HR practices in enhancing the relationship between SCI and performance.

Purpose The dynamic capabilities theory indicates that uncertain environments necessitate firms’ dynamic capability. This study aims to examine how dynamic capability can be shaped based on cooperative goal interdependence with supply chain partners by focusing on the mediating role of strategic flexibility and the moderating role of human resource flexibility. Design/methodology/approach Questionnaire surveys were administered to firm presidents, chief executive officers, chief human resources officers (CHOs) and other senior managers at 300 firms located in China. The data collection process was carried out in one wave with multiple sources. Of the firms contacted, the sample in this study consisted of 233 matched “CHO-other top manager” dyads. Structural equation modeling and the bias-corrected bootstrap method were used to test the proposed causal relationships, moderation model, mediation model and moderated mediation model. Findings Cooperative goal interdependence with both upstream companies and downstream companies was positively related to dynamic capability and strategic flexibility mediated these main effects. Moreover, human resource flexibility moderated the positive direct relationship between strategic flexibility and dynamic capability and the indirect relationships among cooperative goals, strategic flexibility and dynamic capability such that these relationships in companies with high human resource flexibility were stronger than these relationships in companies with low human resource flexibility. Originality/value The findings contribute to the literature on dynamic capability by providing empirical evidence regarding the relationships among cooperative goals, strategic flexibility, human resource flexibility and dynamic capability, which enriches the theory of cooperation and competition and suggests a new path to promote dynamic capability.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine the effect of supply chain integration (SCI) in terms of supplier, customer and internal integration on supply chain performance (SCP) and export performance (EXP). The effect of SCP on EXP is also explored. This study further seeks to examine the mediating effect of SCP on the relationship between the types of SCI and EXP.Design/methodology/approachThe population of this study consists of manufacturing companies in different industries in Jordan. Data were gathered using self-administered questionnaires; managers from 271 companies responded to the survey. The study constructs were assessed for validity and reliability, and it was ensured that acceptable levels of these tests were obtained. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the study hypotheses.FindingsThe findings showed that supplier and customer integration were not drivers of EXP, but internal integration positively impacted EXP. In addition, internal and customer integration positively affected SCP, while supplier integration did not. Also, SCP positively impacted EXP. Furthermore, customer integration and internal integration indirectly impacted EXP through SCP.Practical implicationsManufacturers should establish both intra- and inter-organizational collaborations to improve their performance. Specifically, managers in developing countries need to pay substantial attention to internal integration, as it is the key antecedent of both SCP and EXP. Furthermore, managers must be aware of the essential role of customer integration in improving SCP and subsequently EXP. Therefore, they should make long-term plans to integrate and incorporate key customers. In addition, managers are advised to reconsider their current relationships with suppliers. By failing to take advantage of the valuable expected contribution of supplier integration, manufacturers may lose export opportunities to international competitors.Originality/valueThe present study addresses an evident gap in the available literature regarding the effect of SCI on EXP. It tests a comprehensive model underlining the role of SCP on the relationship between SCI types and EXP. This study is also valuable because it was conducted in a developing country. Generally, manufacturing companies in developing countries face more SC-related difficulties than those in developed countries; these challenges can limit the export abilities of manufacturers in developing countries. The study offers important implications for the managers of manufacturing companies to improve their SCP and, subsequently enhance their EXP.

Purpose The study aims to explore supply chain influence (SCI) on the linkages among market orientation, innovation capabilities and firm performance (FP), using the resource-based view as a theoretical backdrop. Design Survey data from 182 top managers who are involved in strategy formulation and innovative direction of their companies was collected and analyzed using moderated multiple regression analysis. Findings Results revealed a moderating role of the SCI in that the proactive market orientation (PMO) and FP relationship is stronger when SCI is high, and innovation commercialization capability (ICC) and FP relationship is stronger when SCI is low. Practical implications Firms pursuing high PMO strategy must collaborate with supply chain function to achieve the full effect of PMO. Additionally, as supply chain is critical to meeting customers’ needs, these firms should allow supply chain to exert greater influence to enjoy the positive effects of PMO in addition to ensuring full integration into marketing strategy implementation. Also, firms with high ICC need to limit SCI to maximize the benefit of ICC on FP, just as innovation management needs to be cognizant of other functional areas. Originality/value The study investigates the potential moderating role of SCI on the relationships among market orientation, ICC and FP. The study fills a gap in the understanding of the nature and role of supply chain in the marketing–supply chain interaction, and the impact on FP.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine how cloud computing assimilation reduces supply chain financing (SCF) risks of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This study also investigated the mediating roles of internal and external supply chain integration between cloud computing assimilation and the SCF risks of SMEs, as well as the moderating role of environmental competitiveness. Design/methodology/approach Data was collected from surveys of SMEs located in China. Multiple regression analysis was used to validate the proposed theoretical model and research hypotheses. Findings The findings show that cloud computing assimilation could reduce the SCF risks of SMEs directly. The results also indicate that both internal and external supply chain integration mediate the relationship between cloud computing assimilation and SCF risks. Furthermore, environmental competitiveness inhibits the effects of cloud computing assimilation on SCF risks. Originality/value To our best knowledge, this is the preliminary study to explore the role of cloud computing assimilation in reducing the SCF risks of SMEs. Also, this study attempted to investigate the process by which cloud computing assimilation affects the SCF risks of SMEs.

PurposeDrawing on identity theory and the symbolic interactionism perspective of identity theory, this study aims to construct a moderated mediation framework to test the effects of perceived overqualification (POQ) on knowledge sharing (KS) through professional identity threat (PIT) and the moderating role of coworkers' help-seeking behavior (CHSB).Design/methodology/approachThis paper uses a quantitative multistudy research design with a combination of a scenario experiment (Study 1) and a two-wave field study among 220 supervisor-subordinate dyads at a power company in China. Using analysis of variance, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and bootstrapping method, the authors validated the research hypothesis.FindingsIn the scenario experiment study (study 1), the authors find that POQ is positively related to PIT and that CHSB negatively moderates the positive impact of POQ on PIT. The field study (study 2) replicated the above findings and found that PIT mediates the negative effect of POQ on KS. In addition, CHSB negatively moderates the mediating role of PIT between POQ and KS.Originality/valueFirst, the current study extended the nomological network of POQ research by examining its influence on employees' KS. Second, this study empirically investigated the mediating role of PIT, which provided a new explanatory mechanism for the influence of POQ. Finally, this study demonstrates the moderating role of CHSB—a situational factor that has been ignored in previous studies.

PurposeThis study seeks to unpack the relationship between employees' exposure to workplace bullying and their turnover intentions, with a particular focus on the possible mediating role of perceived organizational politics and moderating role of creativity.Design/methodology/approachThe hypotheses are tested with multi-source, multi-wave data collected from employees and their peers in various organizations.FindingsWorkplace bullying spurs turnover intentions because employees believe they operate in strongly politicized organizational environments. This mediating role of perceived organizational politics is mitigated to the extent that employees can draw from their creative skills though.Practical implicationsFor managers, this study pinpoints a critical reason – employees perceive that they operate in an organizational climate that endorses dysfunctional politics – by which bullying behaviors stimulate desires to leave the organization. It also reveals how this process might be contained by spurring employees' creativity.Originality/valueThis study provides novel insights into the process that underlies the connection between workplace bullying and quitting intentions by revealing the hitherto overlooked roles of employees' beliefs about dysfunctional politics and their own creativity levels.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the effect of organizational identification to employees’ innovative behavior, the mediating role of work engagement and the moderating role of creative self-efficacy in the relationship between organizational identification and employees’ innovative behavior. Design/methodology/approach This study adopted questionnaires to gather data. The sample of 289 employees working in diverse organizations in China was applied to examine the hypotheses. Findings The results indicates that organizational identification is positively related to employees’ innovative behavior and work engagement mediates the relationship between organizational identification and employees’ innovative behavior. In addition, creative self-efficacy enhances the relationship of work engagement and employees’ innovative behavior. Originality/value This study builds a system from psychological aspect to behavior, which includes the effect of individual cognition to explain the mechanism of organizational identification on employees’ innovative behavior.

PurposeWith a basis in social identity and equity theories, this study investigates the relationship between employees' perceptions of organizational injustice and their knowledge hiding, along with the mediating role of organizational dis-identification and the potential moderating role of benevolence.Design/methodology/approachThe hypotheses were tested with three-wave survey data collected from employees in Pakistani organizations.FindingsThe experience of organizational injustice enhances knowledge hiding because employees psychologically disconnect from their organization. This mediation by organizational dis-identification is buffered by benevolence or tolerance for inequity, which reduces employees' likelihood of reacting negatively to the unfavourable experience of injustice.Practical implicationsFor practitioners, this study identifies organizational dis-identification as a key mechanism through which employees' perceptions of organizational injustice spur their propensity to conceal knowledge, and it reveals how this process might be mitigated by a sense of obligation to contribute or “give” to organizational well-being.Originality/valueThis study establishes a more complete understanding of the connection between employees' perceptions of organizational injustice and their knowledge hiding, with particular attention devoted to hitherto unspecified factors that explain or influence this process.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that the positive effect of packaging transparency on purchase intention is moderated by product quality risk (PQR) associated with the product category.Design/methodology/approachTwo separate experiments were conducted. Study 1 was designed to test the mediating role of perceived quality to account for the positive effect of transparency on purchase intention. Two types of packaging (opaque vs transparent) for a product associated with a high level of PQR were examined. Study 2 extended the findings by introducing the moderating role of PQR. A 2 (type of packaging: opaque vs transparent)*2 (PQR: low vs high) between subjects design was used.FindingsThe moderating role of the product PQR level is established: transparent packaging improves the product perceived quality and brand purchase intention when the product is associated with a high PQR, whereas there is no such preference for transparent packaging when the product is associated with a low PQR.Practical implicationsThe results offer insights to better understand the potential gains from adopting transparent packaging. If a brand manager's main goals are to develop sales, costly investments in research and development of transparent packaging appear to be fruitful only for products associated with high PQR.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to packaging, cue utilisation and perceived risk literatures by evidencing the moderating role of PQR to explain the positive effect of transparency on purchase intention.
