PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine the effects of colleague and supervisor support on work engagement, examining the mediating role of possibilities for professional development in a healthcare setting.Design/methodology/approachA cross-sectional survey design was used. A sample of 253 Colombian nurses from a private hospital completed a series of questionnaires.FindingsAccording to the results, support from both colleagues and supervisors influences the work engagement of healthcare personnel. This research provides evidence about how to encourage work engagement in nursing staff through an adequate environment characterized by support and opportunities for career advancement.Research limitations/implicationsIn this study, a cross-sectional design was used; therefore, the generalization is limited, and it is not possible to infer causality.Originality/valueProviding certain conditions can promote not only work engagement with its desirable effects, but it may also mitigate the burden of a complex environment such as healthcare.

Purpose To enhance the understanding of the mechanisms underlying the effects of incivility on outcomes, the purpose of this paper is to propose and test work engagement as a mediator of the impact of supervisor-initiated incivility on subordinates’ task and citizenship performance. Further, the authors propose that this mediated relationship would be conditional on the influence of trust in supervisor, such that the relationship would be exacerbated for subordinates who have high levels of trust in the supervisor. Design/methodology/approach Data came from a cross-sectional survey of 350 professionals employed in diverse occupations and organization types. Findings The authors found support for the mediating role of work engagement for citizenship performance, but not for task performance. As predicted, this explanation only held for employees who reported at least average levels of trust in their supervisors, supporting the “mediation is moderated” explanation. Originality/value Understanding how and for whom supervisor incivility affects task and citizenship performance is vital to advancing theory as well as for designing interventions to mitigate the negative effects. This manuscript is one of very few to pursue this line of research and makes important contributions to theory and practice.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine how humanitarian organisation size affects inter-organisational coordination and further tested the mediating role of organisational innovativeness, self-organisation in the relationship between humanitarian organisation size and inter-organisational coordination among humanitarian organisations in Uganda.Design/methodology/approachThe study is based on cross-sectional survey; data was collected from 101 humanitarian organisations. The analysis of the proposed hypotheses was done with the help of PLS-SEM using SmartPLS version 3.3.0 for professionals.FindingsThe results show that humanitarian organisation size significantly relates with inter-organisational coordination. In addition, self-organisation and organisational innovativeness play a complementary role between humanitarian organisation size and inter-organisational coordination.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings of this research provide useful insights into the role of humanitarian organisation size in boosting inter-organisational coordination in humanitarian relief delivery. High levels of self-organisation and organisational innovativeness not only improve inter-organisational coordination in humanitarian relief delivery but also enhance the transformation of humanitarian organisation size benefits into inter-organisational coordination.Originality/valueThis research is one of the few studies that investigated the effect of humanitarian organisation size and inter-organisational coordination. It also brings into the limelight the mediating role of self-organisation and organisational innovativeness between humanitarian organisation size and inter-organisational ordination in humanitarian relief delivery.

PurposeThe purpose of the study is to ascertain the mediating role of meaning between servant leadership and work engagement. The study also explores the relationship between servant leadership and work engagement.Design/methodology/approachThe data were collected from 704 service sector employees working in Pakistan through survey design. The data analysis was done through structural equation modeling using PLS-Smart and hierarchical regression using SPSS.FindingsThe results revealed that servant leadership was related to meaning and work engagement. Moreover, meaning was found to be related to work engagement. Finally, meaning was found to mediate the relationship between servant leadership and work engagement.Originality/valueThe research has ascertained the previously unexplored mediating role of meaning between servant leadership and work engagement.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine a process through which perceived talent identification affects employee burnout. Design/methodology/approach Data for the study were collected from 242 employees using a cross-sectional survey design. Findings The findings supported the mediating role of work effort in the relationship between perceived talent identification and burnout. Furthermore, the results highlighted the moderating role of employee well-being attributions in the relationship between perceived talent identification and employee work effort. The moderated–mediated relationship for burnout was also supported. Research limitations/implications Using insights from conservation of resources and attribution theories, this study not only examined the direct relationship between perceived talent identification and feelings of burnout but also provided insights into why perceived talent identification leads to different employee outcomes. Practical implications Management should pay attention to the communication processes related to talent identification because employees’ interpretation of the underlying motives of this identification impacts their well-being (i.e. feelings of burnout). Originality/value This study examines employees’ attributions in the context of talent management and demonstrates that these interpretations play an important role in shaping their behaviours.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of organisational integrity and leadership behaviour on organisational excellence by considering the mediating role of work engagement in the banking sector. Design/methodology/approach The quantitative (questionnaire survey) design was used to gather data from 285 employees of the banking sector in Southern and Central Iraq. Findings The findings revealed a partial mediation role of work engagement in the relation between organisational integrity and organisational excellence and a full mediation role between leadership behaviour and organisational excellence. Research limitations/implications Managers need to understand that the impact of their leadership behaviour on organisational outcomes; they also have to understand how people think and what motivates them positively. Therefore, managers must deal with employees as internal customers and realise that their satisfaction and performance is the satisfaction of external customers. Originality/value Few studies have dealt with this topic in the in developing countries such as Iraq. The increases the strength of competition in the Iraqi banking sector pays more attention to the search for excellence. Therefore, more research efforts are needed for achieving organisational excellence in this sector.

PurposeMany factors have been identified that may drive a firm’s decision to offshore production activities. The actual performance effects of offshoring, however, depend on the extent to which these drivers are realized. Furthermore, the question is how risk management helps mitigating the risk involved in offshoring ventures, thus leading to better performance outcomes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the extent to which realized offshoring drivers and risk management mediate the relationship between offshoring experience and firm performance.Design/methodology/approachData from the Global Operations Networks project, a cross-sectional survey administered in Denmark and Sweden, are used to test two hypotheses on the mediating role of realized offshoring drivers and risk management in the relationship between offshoring experience and firm performance. AMOS version 23 is used to perform the analyses.FindingsThe results demonstrate that realized offshoring drivers fully mediate the relationship between offshoring experience and firm performance. However, risk management does not mediate the relationship between offshoring experience and firm performance.Originality/valueThis study develops new theory on, and managerial insight into, the mediating role of realized offshoring drivers and risk management in the relationship between offshoring experience and firm performance.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between workplace bullying and employee outcomes (intention to quit (ITQ), job satisfaction and work engagement) with psychological contract violation (PCV) as mediator and workplace friendship as moderator. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 835 full-time Indian managerial employees working in different Indian organizations. Findings Results revealed that PCV mediated bullying-outcomes (ITQ, job satisfaction and work engagement) relationship and effects of workplace bullying on proposed outcomes were weaker in the presence of high workplace friendship. Research limitations/implications A cross-sectional design and use of self-reported questionnaire data are a limitation of this study. As the study did not cover all sectors, the results of this study should be interpreted with caution. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is rare attempts to examine the mediating role of PCV and the moderating role of workplace friendship in bullying-outcomes relationships. This study also contributes in terms of its context and sample.

Purpose This study aims to assess the effect of supplier–buyer association on supply chain sustainability using the pharmaceutical industry in Ghana as a case study. Design/methodology/approach The study used a quantitative research approach. The study design was a cross-sectional survey design. The unit of analysis for the study was top-level managers of pharmaceutical companies in Ghana. By the use of the purposive and convenience sampling techniques, 90 respondents from pharmaceutical firms in Ghana were included. The study used descriptive statistics, t-test and regression tools in the data analysis. Findings It was discovered that trust mediates positively the relationship between supplier–buyer relationship and supply chain sustainability. Moreover, the study found that supplier–buyer relationship (SBR) has a significant and positive impact on supply chain sustainability. Practical implications The study concluded that SBR is the foundation upon which effective supply chain and supply chain sustainability are established. Originality/value This paper provides researchers with a contemporary perspective toward understanding the relationship between SBR and supply chain sustainability and the mediating role of trust.

Purpose Although managers and academicians have recognised the importance of high-commitment work systems (HCWS), work engagement and psychological capital (PsyCap) in service firms, many questions remain unanswered. This study aims to fill the gaps in the area of work engagement by considering the relationships among HCWS, PsyCap and work engagement. In this cross-sectional study, the author drew on the social exchange theory to analyse these relationships. Design/methodology/approach Cross-sectional data from 309 employees from India’s services sector was collected to investigate HCWS and work engagement associations. The data were analysed by structural equation modelling. Findings The study findings integrate the existing literature on human resource (HR) systems and positive psychology by identifying the critical role of PsyCap in passing the positive effects of HCWS to engage employees in their work. Further, it supports the assumption that PsyCap is formed primarily based on organisational practices, thereby addressing the paucity of research that examined the antecedents of PsyCap. Practical implications Owing to study findings, service firms are encouraged to carry out human resource development intervention(s) to make their employees psychologically capable. Since PsyCap is a state-like construct, it can be developed among individuals. Thus, managers can develop their employees’ PsyCap through various training interventions. Originality/value The mediating role of PsyCap in the HCWS and work engagement in India’s service industries settings was tested. The present study’s findings contribute to the theory of strategic human resource management by explaining how HCWS can help employees engage better in their work.

Athlete achievement can be achieved through the role of trainers in determining the program and the training process. During the training process, the coach has a role as a leader and a decision maker. The right leadership and decision-making of a coach will produce talented athletes. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of leadership and decision making from the trainer on the performance of athletes. The research used survey and interview method, with cross sectional survey design. This study used a sample of trainers. Sampling is done by purposive method. The sample used amounted to 53 people. The research instrument used questionnaire. Data were analyzed by using variance analysis. The process of calculation using SPSS version 17. Leadership and decision-making is very important in order to improve athletes achievement.
