Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify a framework to support adaptivity in e-learning environments. The framework reflects a novel hybrid approach incorporating the concept of the event-condition-action (ECA) model and intelligent agents. Moreover, a system prototype is developed reflecting the hybrid approach to supporting adaptivity in any given learning management system based on learners’ learning styles. Design/methodology/approach This paper offers a brief review of current frameworks and systems to support adaptivity in e-learning environments. A framework to support adaptivity is designed and discussed, reflecting the hybrid approach in detail. A system prototype is developed incorporating different adaptive features based on the Felder-Silverman learning styles model. Finally, the prototype is implemented in Moodle. Findings The system prototype supports real-time adaptivity in any given learning management system based on learners’ learning styles. It can deal with any type of content provided by course designers and instructors in the learning management system. Moreover, it can support adaptivity at both course and learner levels. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no previous work has been done incorporating the concept of the ECA model and intelligent agents as hybrid architecture to support adaptivity in e-learning environments. The system prototype has wider applicability and can be adapted to support different types of adaptivity.

This chapter introduces the application of an artificial intelligence technique to a mobile educational device in order to provide a learning management system platform that is adaptive to students’ learning styles. The key concepts of the adaptive mobile learning management system (AM-LMS) platform are outlined and explained. The AM-LMS provides an adaptive environment that continually sets a mobile device’s use of remote learning resources to the needs and requirements of individual learners. The platform identifies a user’s learning style based on an analysis tool provided by Felder & Soloman (2005) and updates the profile as the learner engages with e-learning content. A novel computational mechanism continuously provides interfaces specific to the user’s learning style and supports unique user interactions. The platform’s interfaces include strategies for learning activities, contents, menus, and supporting functions for learning through a mobile device.

PurposeThis paper aims to explore the perspectives of university students on the learning management system (LMS) and determine factors that influence user experience and the outcomes of e-learning.Design/methodology/approachThis paper employs a mixed-method approach. For qualitative data, 20 semi-structure interviews were conducted. Moreover, for quantitative data, a short survey was developed and distributed among the potential respondents.FindingsThe results showed that students, particularly in programs where courses are mainly offered online, are dependent on such learning platforms. Moreover, the use of modular object-oriented dynamic learning environment (Moodle) as an application of LMS was rated positively, and e-learning was considered as an effective sustainable learning solution in current conditions.Originality/valueThe authors have illustrated empirically how the notion of UX of the LMS provides a means of exploring both students' participation in e-learning and their intention towards using such learning platforms.

Educational organizations are able to bridge organizational gaps due to the rapid advances in science and technology. Specifically, e-learning drastically reduces the learning time compared to the traditional classroom setting. The challenges in e-learning are the organization of learning contents, characteristics of the learning individual, technological constraints, and performance evaluation. Moreover, the success of the e-learning environment is greatly influenced by the factors like appropriate recommendations of learning contents, content delivery, performance evaluation, and the maintenance of the psychological level through identification of the learning styles of the learners. The continual process of performance evaluation is commonly attributed by the challenging issues of Ontology Construction and Alignment in order to enhance the semantics of the evaluation documents. In the rest of the chapter, a novel rule-based e-learning management system is discussed as a solution for appropriate recommendations of the learning contents based on the psychological understanding of the learners for learning using fuzzy logic and the subsequent evaluation of the learners using Ontology Construction and Ontology Alignment technique using deontic logic. The experiments have been carried out on evaluating the learning of C programming language using an e-learning framework.

PurposeProvides a detailed account of how a UK Primary Care Trust implemented a learning management system incorporating self‐service and e‐learning functionality.Design/methodology/approachCase study. Written by workforce planning manager for Hertfordshire PCTs who was intimately involved in the management of the e‐learning project. Provides a detailed account of how the learning and development team of the newly merged PCT implemented self‐service learning.FindingsImagine you are part of a learning and development team that has been given the responsibility for training 3,500 staff spread across more than 100 different locations. This was the task facing the 20‐strong team at the Hertfordshire Primary Care Trust. The formation of Primary Care Trusts marked a radical shift in how the NHS is organized and financed at primary care level; its aim was to improve the delivery and quality of primary care and to reduce costs. It has long been recognized that the extent to which this can be achieved depends almost exclusively on the levels of competence and skills shown by NHS workers. The merging in 2006 of Herfordshire's existing eight PCTs into two new PCTs under a shared management team provided the newly merged learning and development team with the chance to completely revamp the whole operation. They aimed to create a learning and development system with self‐service learning and e‐learning functionality that would be universally accessible to all those working in the newly created PCTs.Practical implicationsProvides a useful case study example of how to create a learning management system accessible to all and which was able to raise the profile of training within the organization; identifies the benefits for staff, management and organization.Social implicationsDescribes how the learning management system was able to help maintain the quality of learning and development data for risk management and mandatory reporting.Originality/valueOffers management an account of how one UK Trust implemented a learning management system that incorporated self‐service and e‐learning.

PurposeThis paper aims to derive criteria for a strategic selection of learning management system (LMS) after making an analysis of the feedback data collected from learners and academic counselors in open and distance learning (ODL) to evaluate their perceptions. This analysis hints at the need to implement a learning management system (LMS) in ODL. Selecting an appropriate LMS can prove to be a strategic approach for ODL in achieving self-reliance and competitiveness.Design/methodology/approachResearch design includes qualitative design intended to discuss the features, advantages and attributes of different popular LMSs and compare them. In addition, the quantitative design (a questionnaire-based online feedback) to analyze the perceptions of the learners and academic counselors in order to know their e-learning needs has also been used. Results have been exhibited in tabular/graphical formats for easy comprehension and enhanced understanding.FindingsFindings of the study suggest that availability of plethora of LMSs in the market, which also include open source (OS) LMSs, makes the decision- making as regards selection of an appropriate LMS strategically crucial requiring adequate consideration of every aspect such as cost, quality, usage, capacity, budget and most importantly priorities and objectives.Research limitations/implicationsThis study will help educational administrators and decision-makers in ODL for building a quality civilized life and empowered society by removing the constraints related to financial problems, disabilities, time, geographical conditions and many others in bringing education to the doorstep of every willing learner. The technical details of LMS, however, were intentionally kept simplified to achieve the objective and provide easy comprehensibility for the reader with little technical background, which might be a limitation of this study.Originality/valueThis study highlights that ODL has tasted success with optimum exploitation of different technological advancements in its transformational expedition from conventional learning to innovative e-learning and to the newest adaptive e-learning system. The huge potential of LMS, in providing learners and educators in ODL with an effective web-based learning system incorporating almost all the academic activities, has attracted organizations for using it not only for imparting education to learners but also for providing appropriate trainings to their human resources.

Abstract Traditional Learning Management Systems are installed on a single server where learning materials and user data are kept. To increase its performance, the Learning Management System can be installed on multiple servers; learning materials and user data could be distributed across these servers obtaining a Distributed Learning Management System. In this paper is proposed the prototype of a recommendation system based on association rules for Distributed Learning Management System. Information from LMS databases is analyzed using distributed data mining algorithms in order to extract the association rules. Then the extracted rules are used as inference rules to provide personalized recommendations. The quality of provided recommendations is improved because the rules used to make the inferences are more accurate, since these rules aggregate knowledge from all e-Learning systems included in Distributed Learning Management System.

The phenomenon of Coronavirus Disease 2019 forced the education system in Indonesia to be run online. The descriptive qualitative method was usedin this research to investigate some cases faced by the Fourth Semester Students of the English Department, Nusa Cendana University toward online learning in Cross-Cultural Communication Lecture. It was conducted to answer students’ perceptions, solutions, and expectations in joining online lectures for the last three months in the Even Semester of Academic Year 2019-2020. To collect the data, and a non-facial interview technique was applied through some online Learning Management System; e-learning by Nusa Cendana University and Google Classroom. The data were analyzed by categorizing the students’ answers. The result of this study showed that11.43% were ready for online lectures, while those who prefer regular classes were 82.86%.Only 27.14% could meet the needs of online lectures since they had available mobile data, while 47.14% frankly stated having mobile data problem. It can be concluded that there were some changes in learning culture that forced students to deal with online teaching-learning activities. Undeniable, it was not easy to organize except well prepared from the very first beginning of class by having Course Contract which only needed to be changed into an online form. Yet, their expectations for universities and government to increase Learning Management System and subsidies for the needs of mobile data bundle (for teachers, lecturers, and students).
