Purpose This study aims to test the moderating impact of competition intensity on the relationships between the new product development (NPD) success factors and company success in NPD. Design/methodology/approach A mailed questionnaire collected information from 311 manufacturing companies to test the proposed model with moderated multivariate regression analysis. Findings The results corroborate the impact of competition intensity on the relationships between the success factors individually and company success performing NPD. Research limitations/implications Despite the relatively broad scope of the proposed model, other success factors and/or moderating and mediating variables may also be important. As such, these variables should be identified and tested in future studies. Practical implications In practice, competition is viewed as an unavoidable factor beyond the control of managers within a company. Undeniably, competition is a great stimulant for business innovation. Thus, it is important for managers to understand the need, to focus attention managing the success factors most important to increase the likelihood of long-term success for NPD projects, particularly in markets under intense competition. Originality/value While the study is grounded on well-established literature, its major constructs originated from relatively isolated areas of knowledge. The major contribution is empirically testing an integrated model for variables considered important for success in NPD and the moderating effect of intense competition.

Purpose: The literature prescribing important determinants of new product development success can be grouped into six main areas addressing organization culture, strategic leadership, competitive intelligence, management of technology, specific characteristics of the company’s NPD process, and the company’s absorptive capacity to use available knowledge to produce and commercialize new products. This study expands and tests an expanded model for enhancing the company’s new product development success. Design/methodology/approach: A field test using a mailed questionnaire to collect information from 311 manufacturing companies has been used to test the proposed model. To eliminate possible multicollinearity among the independent variables, a multivariate regression analysis was used. Findings: The results provide conclusive evidence about the importance of these success factors individually and in combination to explain the inter-company variance in success performing new product development. Research limitation/implications: Despite the relatively broad scope of the proposed model, other factors may also be important, should be identified, and tested in future studies. Practical implications: The items used for measuring each of the main constructs provide more specific insights regarding how managers should go about developing these success factors within their organizations. Originality/value: While the study is grounded in the literature of what until now have been relatively isolated areas of knowledge, it proposed and empirically tested a unique and increasingly integrated model for these areas considered important to new product development.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to extend the understanding of Six Sigma (SS) and the underlying dimensions of its critical success factors (CSF) via an analysis of the effects of top management support (TMS), implementation strategy (IS), and collaborative team (CT) on project performance (PP) in Mexican manufacturing companies. Design/methodology/approach – Based on a SS literature review, a survey was conducted to capture practitioners’ viewpoints about CSFs for SS implementation and their impact on performance in manufacturing companies. A factor analysis and structural equation modeling were conducted in order to identify and analyze causal relationships. Findings – The results suggest that CSFs grouped in the constructs TMS, IS, and CT have a positive impact on PP as measured by cost reduction, variation reduction, and quality improvement. Research limitations/implications – Although the empirical data collected supported the proposed model, results might differ among organizations in different countries. In addition, the study did not analyze a unique performance metric; instead, general PP dimensions were used. Practical implications – Boosting the TMS, IS, and CT enhances positive PP of SS in manufacturing companies. Originality/value – IS as a construct has not been studied exhaustively; this work contributes to a better understanding of it and its impact on PP. Additionally, studies of SS in Latin America are limited, so this study gives a complementary vision to practitioners and researchers about it.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose the use of Islamic moral transaction mode as a moderator in sustainable Islamic microfinance banks (IMFBs) business model. Design/methodology/approach The paper highlighted the major issues of microfinance banks in Nigeria and presented an integrated model that will suffice the long-term survival of the institution. Moreover, regression analysis is also employed to examine the impacts of financial outreach on the Nigerian economic growth. Findings The authors find that Islamic moral transaction mode will moderate the sustainable Islamic banking business which can influence the sustenance of IMFBs and the well-being of the society through financial outreach. Research limitations/implications The paper has empirically tested the impact of financial outreach on growth, and suggested future studies to investigate the existing relationships among the proposed model components. Therefore, further studies have the opportunity to develop measurements that will guide in testing the model, as well as strengthening its components. Practical implications Implementing this model will enhance the sustainability of IMFBs and socio-economic well-being of the society through financial outreach. Consequently, this study also suggests other policy measures that will improve the sustenance of IMFBs and the society as a whole. Originality/value The paper contributes to the existing literature of microfinance banks by linking the components of the sustainable business model to primary evidence of Sharia coupled with an in-depth link to generosity.

New product development (NPD) is the major driver of profitability, maintains competitive advantage and ensures the survival of companies. Previous studies showed that a high failure rate was found in the projects of new product development, especially in the consumer market. Thus, this study aims at identifying the success factors of new product development projects at the manufacturing companies in Ho Chi Minh City. In accordance with this purpose, a research model is proposed for this study including four success factors: Nature of product, Project activities, Characteristics of market, and Corporate skills and resources. Total 400 questionnaires were sent to respondents who are project managers at the manufacturing companies, and then 123 feed-backs were considered qualified for the data analysis, with the response rate of 30.75 %. The results of this study show that the characteristics of market have the most positive impact on the success of projects in new product development. The nature of products as well as the corporate skills and resources are the two factors which are also found to have positive impacts on the success of projects in new product development. Meanwhile, the project activities also impose positive impacts on the success of the projects; yet, the impact level is less than the other three factors.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to describe the design and construction of a privilege mapping system (clinical and organizational competences) of the medical staff of the Niguarda Hospital in Milan, Italy. The second aim is to measure and assess the impact of implementing an evaluation process of clinical competences at the same hospital.Design/methodology/approachThe paper retraces the development and implementation of the evaluation of the privilege system, highlighting the subjects involved, the phases and outputs. Moreover, a questionnaire was distributed to 50 heads of unit involved in the planning, building and implementation of competences mapping. Five areas were investigated: competences evaluation for professional development; the impact on work organization and professional roles; professional collaboration; its impact according to context (hospital or unit) and time scale (short or long term); and ability to evaluate clinical outcome.FindingsResults reveal success factors for the development and implementation of a privilege mapping system. Furthermore, the survey revealed that clinical leaders are aware of the importance of competences evaluation. In particular, they consider it as a management tool useful for professional development, for identifying excellence and planning operational activities.Originality/valueLiterature and practical evidence recognize the need to assess the clinical and organizational competences in order to assign tasks and responsibilities. However, there are no studies that describe the construction of systems of evaluation of privileges, as it has never been investigated as professionals perceive these tools.

Purpose Sustainable manufacturing practices are one of the significant environmental initiatives taken by manufacturing industries to preserve the environment and improve the quality of human life while performing manufacturing activities. The emergence of the value creation concept, economic value no longer counts as a single factor for measuring manufacturing performance. Within the sustainability context, the impact of manufacturing activities on the environmental and social aspects should be taken into account as the basis for assessing manufacturing performance, which is called sustainability performance. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship of sustainable manufacturing practices with sustainability performance, which considers the environmental, economic and social aspects. Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire survey is carried out among 443 ISO 14001 certified manufacturing companies in Malaysia. Structural equation modelling is used to evaluate the relationship of sustainable manufacturing practices with sustainability performance. Findings The findings of this study indicate that manufacturing process is the manufacturing stage that gives the most impact on the improvement of sustainability performance. Hence, it is concluded that manufacturing companies in Malaysia are highly focussed on the production bound when implementing sustainable manufacturing practices. Research limitations/implications Although this study indicates a good estimation of the proposed model, additional variables might be added to improve the prediction strength of the proposed model such as considering type of industries, economic scale or ownership. Adding the comparison of sustainable manufacturing practices between different countries also a valuable research to investigated. Practical implications The framework proposed here can also assist manufacturing industries to conduct sustainability assessments by providing elements of sustainability performance and can serve as a guideline to select appropriate sustainable manufacturing practices and to what level the practices need to be improved to leverage companies’ sustainability performance. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide information about the long-term ex-post impacts of Vision 2023 technology foresight (TF) on the defense sector and to identify critical success factors (CSFs) of impactful foresight. Design/methodology/approach In the present research, a theory-based evaluation approach was adopted with the logic-model of defense TF to identify the intended outcomes, impacts and leading mechanisms. The impact assessment framework developed by Johnston, R. (2012) was adopted to identify (un)intended impacts and possible measures. Findings TF had some effects on technological developments, foresight capacity and capability and skills on the sector. The overall impact was assessed at the “some contribution” level with 2.9 out of 5.0 points. It contributed to the development of science technology and innovation (STI) policies and research and development programs, awareness-raising in STI, increase in cooperation between government-university-industry and the development of foresight culture. However, the impacts were more visible in the early years of TF. Additionally, country/sector-specific CSFs were identified. In consequence, it was proposed to measure the maturity of strategic technologies with technology readiness level as a tangible indicator. Originality/value According to the authors, this is the first study to assess the long-term ex-post impact of TF in defense. An instrument was developed to assess TF’s contribution to impact measures. The constructs and weights of the instrument differentiated from the adopted framework/schema reflecting the national/sectoral context of TF. Additionally, the study revealed country/sector-specific CSFs and new tangible impact measures.

PurposeThe purpose of the paper is to examine the impact of macroeconomic variables on the capital structure of manufacturing companies in the Indian context.Design/methodology/approachThe paper employs panel regression technique (random effects model) on a sample of 1,029 listed Indian manufacturing companies divided into two categories – large-size companies and mid-size companies for the last ten years from FY 2008–09 to FY 2017–18. Two separate models pertaining to long-term leverage (TTL_TNW ratio) and total leverage (TOL_TNW) have been examined.FindingsMajor findings show that macroeconomic variables play a relatively more important role in deciding the long-term debt component in the capital structure of the firms as compared to short-term loans. Similarly macroeconomic variables are found to be more significant in case of large-size companies as compared to mid-size companies. Also, there is a negative relationship between market capitalisation and leverage and bank credit and leverage, whereas money supply has a positive relationship with leverage.Research limitations/implicationsThe study makes an important contribution to the existing literature in understanding better how macroeconomic variables play an important role in determining the capital structure of firms. In the present dynamic economic environment, such a study lays down the macro areas on which the academicians, policymakers and financial managers can focus with respect to corporate financing decisions. The firm-specific factors have not been taken into account. Inclusion of these factors will make the results more robust.Originality/valueThe study focusses on the impact of macroeconomic variables on the capital structure decision of the Indian firms. Several studies in this area have been done in the context of the developed countries. However, there are not many studies in the Indian context that examine the relationship between financing decision and macroeconomic variables. The results that have been derived in case of developed economies may not be extended in the Indian context as there are considerable differences across countries related to corporate and legal environment, taxation system, corporate governance laws, interest rate environments, banking system, sources of funds and so on. Therefore, it becomes important to focus on countries individually.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a model developed through a thorough qualitative analysis of pertinent stakeholder perceptions that can be used to map Master of Business Administration (MBA) students’ aspirations, goals, strengths and weaknesses to create optimal interventions and enable better employability. Design/methodology/approach This study used an exploratory research design. The authors conducted interviews with 60 stakeholders to identify themes that form constituents of the E-Career Canvas for Individuals (E-CCI) model. To assess the impact of the proposed initiative, 30 random participants were chosen for interviews from among alumni, present students, faculty, recruiters and the university administration across five years. Findings The proposed model captures the short-term and long-term goals of students concerning their career aspirations. This study has qualitatively explored the impacts of the E-CCI initiative on graduating students’ outcomes. The impacts are positive. The findings also suggest that recruiters do experience an incremental difference among graduates who have participated in the E-CCI program at an educational institute in India. Practical implications Business schools may adopt this model to create profiles of their MBA students. Students, as well as institutional administration, may work on mitigating the shortcomings and weaknesses identified through E-CCI initiatives and target the roles matching the profiles of students during placements. Originality/value This paper presents a novel model of E-CCI to capture the aspirations of MBA graduates and direct them to fulfil their goals. This study takes into consideration the viewpoints of key stakeholders involved to map the effectiveness of the model.

Purpose This paper aims to analyze the impact of team rewards (TR) on quality performance of new product development (NPD). In particular, the authors analyze whether the use of TR affects the performance of NPD team projects in not only accomplishing their work as a team and the outcomes of their performance but also considering the enhancement of the involvement of both internal functions and external actors (suppliers and customers) in the early stages of NPD Design/methodology/approach The association of TRs on quality performances of new products is theoretically approached. Seven research hypotheses are proposed to be tested with an international database from the high performance manufacturing project. Empirical strategy includes structural equation modeling. Findings The authors observed that TR does not produce a direct effect on quality performance of NPD, but does so mediated through the involvement of SC members in the early stages of NPD. This paper highlights that, without involvement of external and internal supply chain actors, it is not possible to obtain desired performance of new products. Originality/value This study advances the study of TR on quality performance of NPD by considering TR as a tool for in-group work involving different and distant actors in the process of NPD. The analysis considers different dimensions of quality performance of NPD, distinguishing between time to market, technical issues and cost of manufacturing, which have usually been considered in an aggregated way. Empirical evidence using an ample database including manufacturing companies from fourteen countries
