Incumbents will dominate Nigerian gubernatorial polls

Significance The results will indicate whether newly re-elected President Muhammadu Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) will continue to dominate at the sub-national level and will give clues about the future of Nigerian politics once Buhari finishes his second and final term in 2023. Impacts The longstanding political influence of zonal power-brokers may grow more fragmented in subsequent electoral cycles. The run-up to the May 29 presidential inauguration could see a wave of court battles over election results. Further disputed polls will intensify fears about the APC’s willingness to unfairly manipulate state institutions to its advantage.

This study examines the factors that contributed to the success of the Serbian Radical Party (SRS) during Serbia's September 2004 local elections. Understanding the factors behind the SRS's success is important, both for the future of local government in an increasingly decentralized Serbia, and for electoral politics at the national level. Through quantitative analyses of election results across 160 localities and drawing from evidence gathered from interviews, media reports, and various analytical sources, the study demonstrates that a combination of new electoral laws, turnout levels, proportions of refugees and minorities, economic factors, and divisions amongst democratic bloc parties all contributed to variation in SRS success across Serbia's localities.

Significance Manyi, a Zuma ally, bought the Gupta-owned The New Age newspaper and TV news channel ANN7 in August in a wholly vendor-financed deal. In recent years, The New Age and ANN7 have emerged as unambiguous supporters of Zuma’s government and it is widely believed that the sale overestimates the value of the assets. It comes as the media landscape undergoes conflicting trajectories: declining newspaper readership; acclaimed collaborative investigative journalism uncovering state corruption; and the gradual financial and institutional decline of the state-owned South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). Impacts The proliferation of ‘fake news’ on twitter and social media sites will increase in the run up to the ANC’s December national conference. An SABC request for a further sizeable state guarantee will stretch the National Treasury’s capacity. The Guptas' broader political influence could be partly lessened due to the loss of formal banking facilities.

This article seeks to put the 1980 election in perspective, to discuss its significance for the future of US politics, and to estimate the likely impact of, and some possible reactions to the rapid shift of population, wealth, and political influence towards the west and south. Analysis of the 1980 election results shows a heavy defeat for the Democratic party and not merely for President Carter, but no positive mandate for conservatism. However, if a Democratic recovery were based only on Republicans over-estimating their support, it would be short-lived. For it to be lasting, the party needs to regain the intellectual initiative that it has lost, and to extend its appeal in the increasingly powerful sunbelt states. Mexican-Americans, being numerous, neglected, and strategically placed, form a likely target group. They may be harder to attract than Democratic optimists suppose.

Significance The succession struggle within ZANU-PF to replace Mugabe -- widely believed to be physically incapable of serving more than one additional term in office -- has led to intensified intra-party conflict as rival factions compete for control of key state institutions. Both the Lacoste and the G40 factions of the ruling party are attempting to monopolise the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) and appoint the new chief justice, hoping to control the 2018 election results and the ruling party thereafter. Impacts Continued political uncertainty and international criticism will deter investment, hurting the prospects of economic recovery. The 2018 elections are likely to be of a lower democratic quality than 2013, generating opposition protests and international condemnation. The ruling party may call a snap election as a result of either further economic decline or Mugabe’s failing health.

Subject Political outlook for Liberia. Significance Civil society campaigners are pressing for an extension of the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) until after the October 2017 presidential election, which will decide the successor to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who is constitutionally required to step down. The run-up to the polls will test the resilience of state institutions, which have undergone major reforms following the 1999-2003 civil war. Impacts The NEC's clear elections timetable will boost transparency around the electoral process, reducing scope to dispute the result. The small number of airlines flying to Liberia will limit the government's new tourism strategy, unveiled earlier this month. Planned electricity imports from Ivory Coast (which is building cross-border transmission lines) will support economic activity. If Sirleaf fails to pass legislation protecting rural communities' land rights before she steps down, some popular unrest could result.

Significance The build-up to Venezuela's December 6 elections shows continuity with conflictive electoral cycles of the past 15 years. Inconclusive opinion polls caution against a bullish opposition extrapolating popular rejection of President Nicolas Maduro at the national level to the local level. The ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) may once again survive a tough campaign through opposition miscalculations. Impacts The brief campaign period will be marked by intense competition. Dirty tricks, wild claims and hyperbole will dominate media coverage, exacerbating a climate of conflict. While the PSUV machine will lurch into action, the opposition risks divisive internal splits.

The purpose of this article is to provide the basic model of Hofstede and Grays’ cultural values that relates the Hofstede’s cultural dimensions and Gray‘s accounting value. This article reviews some studies that prove the model and develop the research in the future. There are some evidences that link the Hofstede’s cultural values studies with the auditor’s judgment and decisions by developing a framework that categorizes the auditor’s judgments and decisions are most likely influenced by cross-cultural differences. The categories include risk assessment, risk decisions and ethical judgments. Understanding the impact of cultural factors on the practice of accounting and financial disclosure is important to achieve the harmonization of international accounting. Deep understanding about how the local values may affect the accounting practices and their impacts on the financial disclosure are important to ensure the international comparability of financial reporting. Gray’s framework (1988) expects how the culture may affect accounting practices at the national level. One area of the future studies will examine the impact of cultural dimensions to the values of accounting, auditing and decision making. Key word : Motivation, leadership style, job satisfaction, performance

It is a common assumption in the international media that the fundamentalist Christian Right suddenly appeared on the US political scene following the 11 September 2001 tragedy, and that it became a major force in shaping US policy in the Middle East. While it is true that fundamentalist Christians have exercised considerable influence during the George W. Bush administration, their ascendance is neither new nor surprising. The movement has demonstrated political influence in the US and England intermittently for more than a hundred years, particularly in the formation of Middle East policy. This article focuses on the unique theology and historical development of Christian Zionism, noting its essential beliefs, its emergence in England during the nineteenth century, and how it grew to gain prominence in the US. The alliance of the pro-Israel lobby, the neo-conservative movement, and several Christian Zionist organizations in the US represents a formidable source of support for the more maximalist views of Israel's Likud Party. In the run-up to the 2004 US presidential elections this alliance could potentially thwart any progress on an Israeli–Palestinian peace plan in the near future. Moreover, Likud ideology is increasingly evident in US Middle East policy as a result of this alliance.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore insights methodology and technology by using behavioral to create a mind-set change in the way people work, especially in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). Design/methodology/approach The approach is to examine how AI is driving workplace change, introduce the idea that most organizations have untapped analytics, add the idea of what we know future work will look like and look at how greater, data-driven human behavioral insights will help prepare future human-to-human work and inform people’s work with and alongside AI. Findings Human (behavioral) intelligence will be an increasingly crucial part of behaviorally smart organizations, from hiring to placement to adaptation to team building, compliance and more. These human capability insights will, among other things, better prepare people and organizations for changing work roles, including working with and alongside AI and similar tech innovation. Research limitations/implications No doubt researchers across the private, public and nonprofit sectors will want to further study the nexus of human capability, behavioral insights technology and AI, but it is clear that such work is already underway and can prove even more valuable if adopted on a broader, deeper level. Practical implications Much “people data” inside organizations is currently not being harvested. Validated, scalable processes exist to mine that data and leverage it to help organizations of all types and sizes be ready for the future, particularly in regard to the marriage of human capability and AI. Social implications In terms of human capability and AI, individuals, teams, organizations, customers and other stakeholders will all benefit. The investment of time and other resources is minimal, but must include C-suite buy in. Originality/value Much exists on the softer aspects of the marriage of human capability and AI and other workplace advancements. What has been lacking – until now – is a 1) practical, 2) validated and 3) scalable behavioral insights tech form that quantifiably informs how people and AI will work in the future, especially side by side.

Purpose The increasing desire of consumers for socially responsible luxury products combined with fluctuating supplies in consumer markets are leading various industries to seek alternative sources to be able to meet the needs of its customers. One possible solution that may meet the demands of the future is lab-grown products. Because these products confer multiple benefits, this study aims to investigate the most effective ways to appeal to consumers by aligning the benefits of the products with their values as marketers seek to find effective promotion for these items. Design/methodology/approach We examine the effectiveness of an ethical positioning strategy for two types of luxury lab-grown (synthetic) products among high versus low materialism consumers in three experiments. Findings Findings suggest that a positioning strategy stressing product ethicality is more effective for low materialism consumers, whereas the strategy is less effective, and may even backfire, for high materialism consumers. The impact on social status consumers perceive from a lab-grown product explains why this effect occurs among low materialism consumers. Therefore, marketers should take caution and use specific appeals for different segments based on values such as consumers’ materialism levels. Originality/value If lab-grown products represent the wave of the future, it is important to understand how consumers will respond to this emerging technology and how promotion strategies may enhance their evaluation.
