Subject. This article deals with the issues of functioning of the region as a system. Objectives. The article aims to identify the problems of the region's functioning as a system, develop methodological tools to monitor the sustainable development of the Siberian Federal District territories, and determine the the impact of socio-economic and environmental factors on the sustainable development of the region as a whole. Methods. For the study, I used the methods of theoretical, statistical, and empirical analyses taking into account an integrated approach. Results. The article reveals the impact of some individual components of regional development on the sustainability of the territorial system as a whole. Relevance. The results of the study can be used to analyze the sustainability of regions' development.

This chapter introduces a new, two-dimensional way of measuring intra-party democracy (IPD). It is argued that assembly-based IPD and plebiscitary IPD are two theoretically different modes of intra-party decision-making. Assembly-based IPD means that discussion and decision over a certain topic takes place at the same time. Plebiscitary IPD disconnects the act of voting from the discussion over the alternatives that are put to a vote. In addition, some parties have opened up plebiscitary decision-making to non-members which is captured by the concept of open plebiscitary IPD. Based on the Political Party Database Project (PPDB) dataset, indices are developed for the three variants of IPD. The empirical analyses here show that assembly-based and plebiscitary IPD are combined by political parties in different ways while open party plebiscites are currently a rare exception.

This article will critically analyse the sources and the role of knowledge diversity in informing causation logics in family firms. Family firms rely on knowledge resources from both intra-family and extra-family sources, which may require different approaches to effectively manage. We argue that as family firms acquire greater knowledge diversity, family-centred effectuation processes become limited and they will increasingly rely on formal causation logics to coordinate these resources. However, we expect this relationship to differ when knowledge diversity is sourced from either family or non-family sources. Empirical analyses of 242 small- and medium-sized family firms indicate that knowledge diversity positively affects a firm’s reliance on causation logics, regardless of the source of that diversity. This suggests that the affinity of family firms to leverage effectuation logics may not be characteristic of family firms in general, but instead may be an artefact of firm reliance on knowledge capital concentrated in family owners.

Global activities of banks are a core manifestation of broader patterns of globalization of production, trade, and finance. This article reviews the extensive recent empirical and theoretical literature on global banking, emphasizing the careful empirical analyses that incorporate key dimensions of heterogeneity among borrowers and lenders, and across activities. The actions of globally active banks are consequential, with cost and benefit trade-offs that differ during their lifetimes and at times of stress. Both research and policymaking around global banking benefit from improved infrastructures around collection of and access to granular data and repositories of evaluation studies. Although overall positive contributions from welfare perspectives arise from the activities of global banks, these organizations require appropriately targeted policy frameworks and oversight.

Manufacturing firms that collaborate with external R&D partners are inevitably confronted with the danger of R&D suppliers deliberately with holding knowledge. Empirical analyses on a set of 104 supplier firms provide results concerning the impact of “soft” determinants of knowledge sharing that have not been investigated to date. In particular, they show that intrinsic motivation and organisational culture are more important than better examined “hard” determinants such as behaviour monitoring and the collaboration perspective. Additionally, we detect a theoretically surprising effect of knowledge sharing on the supplier firm’s success.
