Examining the relationship between soft total quality management (TQM) aspects and employees' job satisfaction in “ISO 9001” Sudanese oil companies

PurposeSoft total quality management (TQM) aspects are the facets of TQM that mainly concern with the management of human resource in a way to achieve the results of employees' job satisfaction. Based on this approach, the objective of this research is to examine the relationship between the most popular five soft TQM aspects and employees' job satisfaction in “ISO 9001” certified Sudanese oil companies.Design/methodology/approachData were collected through questionnaires from employees across a total of five Sudanese oil companies owned by the government, and adopting an ISO-9001 quality program. The total population of the study consists of 1,505 permanent employees, while the sample size was 253 employees, determined by adopting a stratified random sampling technique. The multiple regression model was adopted for data analysis.FindingsThe results showed that the construct of soft TQM aspects including “top management commitment”, “employee empowerment”, “teamwork”, “training and education” and “employee involvement” explain 74% in the variance of employees' job satisfaction. Results showed positive association between soft TQM aspects and employees' job satisfaction at the 5% significance level. It was also found that each individual variable of the five soft TQM aspects has a significant positive association with employees' job satisfaction. Meanwhile, the results indicated that the most important soft TQM aspect in explaining the variability of employees' job satisfaction was the “employee empowerment” with the highest correlation coefficient (β) of (0.189).Practical implicationsThe study recommends that in order to achieve their primary goal of employees' satisfaction, HR practitioners within organizations adopting total quality programs should align their practice in such a way to enhance soft aspects of TQM. Policy makers and top management in order to gain long-term infrastructural benefits obtained from employees' job satisfaction should show a visible support to TQM programs and allocate necessary resources to train their staff in the quality management system that enhance their empowerment and involvement. The study also recommends that since soft aspects of TQM raise their job satisfaction, employees should support and conform to quality management systems within their organizations.Originality/valueThe paper focuses on soft TQM aspects’ practical implementation. The findings make a significant contribution by using ISO-certified governmental Sudanese oil companies and tested the hypothesized model entails the impact of soft TQM implementation and employees' job satisfaction.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between innovation and total quality management (TQM), and also to identify the effects of innovation on organizational performance. This research proposes a conceptual model that intends to study several research hypotheses. Design/methodology/approach The data were obtained through an online questionnaire, sent to small- and medium-sized Portuguese companies, having being conducted the study based on responses received from 287 valid questionnaires, and using a multivariate statistical analysis for statistical development. Findings The findings indicate that companies that adopt strategies of process innovation get improvements in their performance, both operationally and financially, while product innovation only provides improvements in the financial performance of organizations. It was also found that TQM practices encourage the definition of innovation strategies of products and processes. On the other hand, it was found that only companies that adopt innovation strategies of their processes promote the adoption of TQM practices, and there is a statistically significant relationship between product innovation and the implementation of TQM practices. Originality/value This research analyzed the dimensions studied in different aspects. It considered product innovation and process innovation, and with respect to performance, this dimension was analyzed through two different perspectives, namely, financial performance and operational performance. This research also provides a particular contribution to the literature with the analysis of the interdependencies between innovation and TQM in small- and medium-sized Portuguese companies.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between total quality management (TQM) practices and quality performance with special emphasis on ISO 9001:2000 certified manufacturing organizations in Malaysia.Design/methodology/approachThe empirical data was drawn from 122 ISO 9001:2000 certified manufacturing organizations in Malaysia. The data were analyzed using correlation and multiple regression analyses.FindingsThe findings revealed that TQM practices were found to be partially correlated with quality performance of the Malaysian ISO 9001:2000 certified manufacturing organizations. It is also found that where customer focus and continual improvement were perceived as dominant TQM practices in quality performance.Research limitations/implicationsThis research paper was limited by excluding non‐ISO 9001:2000 certified organizations in the selection of manufacturing firms in Malaysia, making this a possibly biased selection, which might not adequately represent the Malaysian perspective on the entire Malaysia's manufacturing industry.Originality/valueThe outcome of the study could provide valuable knowledge to top management of ISO 9001:2000 certified manufacturing organizations to refine their quality management practices and subsequently improve quality performance.

The purpose of this research is to examine empirically the effect of management accounting systems and leadership style to the relationship between Total Quality Management (TQM) with job satisfaction. The hypothesis is that there are significant influence of management accounting systems and leadership style to relationship between Total Quality Management (TQM) with job satisfaction. Taken population in this research consists of companies in Indonesian Capital Market Directory (ICMD) year 2004. The samples are middle managers of manufacturing business in ICMD. The hypotheses are examined by moderated regression analysis. Therefore, data must be analyzed by classical assumption, i.e. normality, autocorrelation, and heteroscedasticity. The examination indicated that all variable are valid and reliable. The classical assumption test fulfilled the classical assumption. Results of hypothesis examination indicate that leadership style has effect to the relationship between Total Quality Management (TQM) with job satisfaction. Nevertheless, the effect of management accounting systems to relationship between Total Quality Management (TQM) with job satisfaction is not supported by the research. PurposeThis paper presents findings of a survey on total quality management (TQM) practices adopted by the Indian manufacturing organizations. The purpose of this paper is to test and establish the relationship between TQM practice and organizational performance (OP). This paper also aims to examine the impact of TQM practices on OP of Indian manufacturing organizations.Design/methodology/approachA survey questionnaire was developed and randomly distributed through e-mail to senior managers of 275 Indian manufacturing organizations. About 230 received questionnaires were used for data analysis. Response rate was 83.63 percent. In particular, hypotheses were developed to examine the effect of TQM on the OP of the manufacturing organizations. Cronbach's alpha reliability of questionnaire was analyzed using factor analysis. Rigorous literature review is enabled to construct structural measurement model, formulation of testable hypothesis and operationalization of constructs.FindingsIt is discovered that TQM has a positive and significant effect on the market orientation (MO). Similarly, the results showed that MO has a positive and significant effect on the OP. With regard to the relationship between TQM and OP, this study found that TQM significantly and positively affects the OP of Indian manufacturing organizations.Originality/valueThis study is a rare and unique empirical study that establishes a link among TQM, MO and OP. The study fulfills need of quality management practice and offers practical implications to Indian managers and motivates further research on the relationship between TQM and OP in Indian manufacturing organizations.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between total quality management practices and the organizational performance in the Jordanian construction chemicals companies. Design/methodology/approach In this research, ten constructs were used to measure TQM practices, whereas six constructs were used to measure the organizational performance. A total of 160 questionnaires were distributed to 28 companies. Of these 131 questionnaires were completed and used for the analysis, representing a response rate of 81.9 percent. Findings Analysis has shown that TQM practices positively affect the organizational performance, with a significant value for top management commitment, customer focus, supplier management, process control and continuous improvement. Research limitations/implications Results were based on perceptual data provided by participants working in different sectors of the organization, which may not provide a clear picture. It would be appropriate to consider collecting information from several stakeholders such as customers and suppliers. Willingness of respondents and delivering data within time were a big challenge though efforts were made to guarantee the confidentiality of the respondents. Practical implications Results from this research points out that TQM is considered as a key-contributing factor to firm’s survival. It also provides empirical support that TQM implementation in manufacturing organizations contributes to the performance and survival of such organizations. This research also provides an understanding of the dynamic role of TQM practices that would help managers pay attention to the fundamental practices that have a direct impact on the firms’ performance. This will help the organizations to dedicate efforts and allocate resources to get the best long-term outcomes and to figure out their strengths and weaknesses to develop and implement a new strategy to enhance their competitive position. Originality/value Construction sector in Jordan is a competitive sector. Therefore, quality in such industry is vital. Many companies in Jordan have much interest in implementing TQM practices. However, research efforts related to this field are rare. No research papers investigating the relationship between TQM practices and performance in Jordanian construction chemicals companies have been found. This research, therefore, seeks to examine the relationship between TQM practices and the construction chemicals firms’ performance in Jordan.

Purpose – Multinational corporations face a more intense competence and a higher number of changes in the different countries they operate. In this regard, organizational learning and quality management are key elements that could help them to survive in the market. Convinced by the numerous benefits and competitive potential of total quality management (TQM) programmes, corporations have promoted its implementation. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the interaction between these programmes and organizational learning, more precisely with exploitation and exploration capabilities, in order to understand the way in which quality management programmes could help to develop learning in the companies. Design/methodology/approach – Structural equation modelling was used to test the proposed model. The sample comprised 111 medium-sized Spanish companies, with four different responses each. Constructs are measured with Likert scales previously tested in the literature. Findings – The results show that TQM is positively and strongly related to both exploitation and exploration and that the relationship between TQM and exploitation is higher. Concerning the effects of exploitation and exploration on firm performance; results of the analysis show that only exploration capability positively affects organizational performance. It is also confirmed a positive effect of a TQM system in performance. Originality/value – This research covers a gap in the literature regarding the relationship between organizational learning and TQM, particularly with the concepts of exploitation and exploration in the context of multinational companies.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating effect of learning organization dimensions on the relationship between the implementation of total quality management practices and companies’ operational performance improvement. Design/methodology/approach The authors carried out a cross-sector survey with 135 Brazilian manufacturing companies that have been implementing total quality management as an organizational strategy for at least five years. Collected data were analyzed using multivariate data analysis techniques. Findings The findings provide guidelines for manufacturers to increase their learning capability by reinforcing the implementation of total quality management practices, whose synergistic effects may be currently neglected. Results show that an enhanced organizational learning capability can significantly impact the improvement level of operational performance through the application of total quality management practices. Originality/value Several authors have investigated the relationship between total quality management implementation and learning organization aspects. However, most studies examined their relationship from a narrow perspective or under specific contexts, lacking empirical validation of their concurrent effect on operational performance improvement. The study aims at bridging this gap.

This research was conducted to determine the effect of Total Quality Management on Employee Performance with a moderating variable namely Job Satisfaction. The method used in this study is regression analysis. The conclusions from the results of data analysis are (1) Total Quality Management has a significant effect on Employee Performance so that by increasing the value of Total Quality Management (TQM) it will provide a significant increase in Employee Performance. (2) Total Quality Management and Job Satisfaction show insignificant influence on Employee Performance, so the hypothesis that Job Satisfaction moderates the relationship between Total Quality Management and Employee Performance is rejected because the effect is insignificant.
