AbstractThe aim of this paper is to analyze the performance of RAMAN amplifier (RAMAN), Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) and semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) amplifiers separately at 10 Gbps data rate for 32-channel WDM system for a fiber length of 40 km to 280 km. Depending upon the results, the performance of the three amplifiers has been compared. It is observed that RAMAN amplifier provides a better result in terms of Q factor up to a fiber distance of approximately 20 km and in terms of bit error rate (BER) up to a distance of approximately 40 km among all the three amplifiers. EDFA starts providing better Q factor after a fiber distance of approximately 20 km and better BER after a fiber distance of approximately 40 km among all the three amplifiers. But power received is minimum in case of RAMAN amplifier. In terms of power received, SOA provides better result up to a fiber distance of approximately 120 km and after that EDFA provides a better result in terms of power received among all the three amplifiers. All these parameters (Q factor, BER and power received) are also analyzed for different values of laser power. Finally, the eye diagram has also been analyzed.

Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers is a signal light amplification of optical devices. This paper analyzes the impact of various fiber parameters on the noise figure, and characteristic of noise index has been simulated by means of OASIX software. The relationship between the pump power and noise figure, and fiber length and noise figure are obtained.

According to the analytical expression for modal gain of few-mode erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (FM-EDFAs), we propose a method of measuring the absorption loss coefficients of few-mode signals in few-mode erbium-doped fibers (FM-EDFs) by extrapolating the mode–gain curve dependent on the average population inversion. The absorption loss coefficient of an FM-EDF was measured in our experimental platform and used to estimate the effective erbium-ion doping concentration. The feasibility of the extrapolation method was verified by simulation and comparison with the transmission method. Furthermore, the FM-EDFAs with high modal gain and low differential mode gain (DMG) could be optimized by adjusting the FM-EDF’s length and pump power. The analysis process presented here is very useful for the efficient design of FM-EDFAs from a practical point of view.

Abstract Different fiber amplifiers such as semiconductor optical amplifier, erbium-doped fiber amplifier and erbium ytterbium-co-doped fiber amplifier (EYCDFA) are investigated for 16×40 GB/s wavelength division multiplexing system. Various performance parameters including Q-factor, bit error rate, jitter, eye opening and eye closure are observed and analyzed. It is reported that EYCDFA is a better choice among the tested amplifiers. The proposed system is also investigated in terms of transmission distance.
