Eddy current retarder was a retarder braking set used in an automobile, and it can transform kinetic energy or mechanical energy of the automobile into heat energy, and heat energy was emitted around environment by the blades founded in the rotor of eddy current retarder, so flow field within the blade had direct effect on heat elimination and braking performance. In this paper two styles of 2D computational model for the rotor had been established. The flow field between and out of blades were analyzed by using RNG Κ-ε model and energy equation. The velocity distribution, pressure distribution between blades, static pressure on work face and rear face of the blade along radial direction all were accepted. The pressure, velocity and air flux for two styles of the blades had been compared. Numerical analysis of flow field was in favor of improved structure design for the blade.

Auxiliary brake sets had been widely used for heavy duty trucks and advanced buses. They played a role of split-flow braking load of main brake system. As one of auxiliary brake sets eddy current retarder had good braking performance and braking stability, and it is automotive and maintain constant speed by its continual braking. In this paper, key technologies of eddy current retarder, such as braking torque, working volt and current, magnetic circuit, material of rotor plate and iron, heat dissipation performance of rotor plate, match between eddy current retarded and automobile, and effect of temperature rise on its braking performance were presented and discussed in detail. Meanwhile, advantage and disadvantage of eddy current retarder were analyzed.

A test-bed used to test electromagnetic eddy current retarder’s performance was designed. It can evaluate the connection of automobiles speed, excitation current, rotor temperature and brake torsion. Besides, a series of flywheels were designed which can randomly combine and simulate the running state of the automobiles. The design of flywheel is referred in many machines, not for it can solve the problem of stability, but for providing moment of inertia.

This paper presents the statistical analysis that was used to define optimized parameter for the electromagnetic braking using eddy current study. It illustrates parametric study on four different parameters affecting the braking performance using eddy current which are air-gap, number of electromagnet turns, current induced and disc thickness. These four parameters are defined as the factors which contribute to the reduction of RPM speed as the effect. Fully nested ANOVA was used as the first analysis to determine two most significant factors to eddy current braking system. Then, two-way ANOVA was applied to clarify the most significant factors to be used as the controllable parameters in the verification study. Results from both ANOVA test shows that current induced and air-gap are the two most significant factors that affected braking using eddy current.

The eddy current retarder generator / starter integrated system is a vehicle intelligent system which can be used as vehicle starter, power generation. The system can reduce the energy consumption of the car, extends battery life, and improves the stability of the brake system.
