Lanthanum aluminate(LaAlO3) single crystal as a substrate for high Tc superconducting film has attracted attention recently. We report here a transmission electron microscopy(TEM) study of the crystal structure and phase transformation of LaAlO3 by using Philips EM420 and EM430 microscopes. Single crystals of LaAlO3 were investigated first by optical microscope. Stripe-shaped domains of mm size are clearly seen(Fig.1a), and 90° domain boundary is also obvious. TEM specimens were prepared by mechanical grinding and polishing followed by ion-milling.Fig.lb shows μm size stripe domains of LaAlO3. Convergent beam electron diffraction patterns (CBED) from single domain were taken.Fig. 2a and Fig. 2c are [001] zone axis patterns which show a 4mm symmetry, and the (200) dark field of this zone axis gives 2mm symmetry(fig.2b). Therefore the point group of this crystal is either 4/mmm or m3m. The projection of the first order Laue zone(FOLZ) reflections on zero layer (fig. 2c) shows that the unit cell is face centered. A tetragonal unit ceil is chosen, with a=0.532nm and c=0.753nm, c being determined from the FOLZ ring diameter.

The solid-reaction was applied to synthesize perovskite-phase Lanthanum Aluminate powders by using AlOOH and La2(C2O4)3 as raw materials, mineralizer AlCl3 and AlF3 as the additives, graund and mixed, then calcined at 800°C and 1200°C for 3 h. The XRD pattern shows that mono-phase LaAlO3 powders can be obtained at 1200°C, and the SEM analysis indicates that the AlCl3 and AlF3 can promote the grain growth and have a good control of morphology.

AbstractLanthanum aluminate-lanthanum zirconate composite was synthesized by using coprecipitation and powders were dried by spray-drying. Pseudoboehmite was used as a precursor of lanthanum aluminate during the precipitation process. Highly crystalline phases were obtained. Lanthanum zirconate exhibits a pyrochlore structure at lower synthesis temperature (>1500°C). Due drying technique lanthanum aluminate particles appear surrounded by lanthanum zirconate. No other remaining phases were observed and the phase distribution in the composite was homogeneous.

ABSTRACTSimultaneous additions of lanthanum aluminate(LAL) and Al2O3 to Ce-TZP (12mol% CeO2-ZrO2) lead to the in-situ formation of lanthanum- β-alumina(LBA) platelets (∼1.0.μ m in width and 5 ∼10 μ m in length) in the Ce-TZP matrix during sintering. The composites showed a fracture toughness(SEPB method) of 9.5 MPa · m0.5 and fracture strength of 960 MPa. which are remarkably improved from Ce-TZP sintered body (8.5 MPa · m0.5 and 560 MPa).The composites also exhibit the no degradation by hydrothermal treatment.

AbstractBoth lanthanum aluminate (LaAIO 3) and spinel (MgAl2O 4) epitaxial thin films have been deposited on either planar and stepped (100) SrTiO3 single crystal substrates by pyrolysis of mixed nitrate precursors. The precursors pyrolyze initially into amorphous films. Nucleation of lanthanum aluminate and spinel occurs at the filnVsubstrate interface at higher temperature. Crystallization of LaAlO3 on SrTiO3 substrates occurs at approximately 650°C, whereas nucleation occurs at approximately 800'C without lattice-matched substrates. Similarly, latticematched substrates reduce the crystallization temperature of spinel to below 700°C. The epitaxial film grows at the expense of the amorphous film after the initial nucleation at the interface. The rapid growth and volume change due to the crystallization leave behind an epitaxial film with nanoporosity of 15 to 30 nm. Nevertheless, the surfaces of these films have roughness of only 6–9 Å. Ba2Ycu3O7-x films derived from metalorganic deposition of metal trifluoroacetate precursors was deposited on these epitaxial LaAlO3 films on both planar and stepped SrTiO3 substrates. The resultant YBCO films on LaAlO3 film on planar SrTiO3 substrate have critical current densities of > 2 × 106 A/cm2 at 77K and zero field.
