This chapter describes the Northwestern University Collaboratory Project’s ePortfolio. As a resource in the Collaboratory, a Web-based collaborative learning environment, it provides collaborative learning spaces where K-12 students can share and discuss their work. Web document templates are used by students to create media-rich documents that can be viewed with only a Web browser. Of particular significance is how the ePortfolio’s document-based communication model is being used to support mentoring, peer review, feedback, and reflection, and to facilitate a community of learning that motivates and encourages students.

Collaborative re-use of design and manufacturing data is one way that global e-commerce could significantly reduce development costs and lead times of new products. However the proliferation of web based catalogues for standard components (e.g. brochure-ware for nuts and washers etc.) only hints at the possible productivity gains if a 3D search engine could be created. Consequently the research reported here is motivated by the belief that shape matching technology is key to enabling a much deeper form of Internet-based collaborative commerce. This paper describes the coarse “shape” filters that support a 3D, Internet-based search engine, known as ShapeSifter, whose ultimate aim is to enable the location of parts already in production that have a shape similar to a desired “newly designed” part. The challenge of the research is to identify the key metrics that produce meaningful characterizations of 3D models for similarity comparison purposes. In this context the work reported focuses on the use of novel indices based on an object’s convex-hull and surface area distribution to carry out a coarse filtering of candidates prior to the application of more detailed analysis (e.g. the construction of multi-dimensional feature vectors). In doing this, the paper describes the crucial role played by a benchmark database of geometrical similar objects.

88 Background: Smart phone web based applications (apps) can be effective communication tools for monitoring compliance and increasing adherence to oral anti-cancer therapy in the outpatient setting. Methods: Cancer patients age 18-90 treated with various oral anti-cancer therapies were recruited to this prospective, 3 month observational trial at our large community cancer center to determine feasibility of using an app for oral anti-cancer therapy compliance. Enrolled patients are randomized to either Arm 1 App arm and nurse counseling or Arm 2 nurse counseling only. The free apps MyMeds and Medisafe incorporate medication reminders and record doses. Patients complete the validated RAND 36- item quality of life (QOL) questionnaire and a free text feedback. Results: 91 patients were screened between 11/2015 to 9/2016 (45 declined enrollment due to various factors). 46 patients were randomized with 25 to Arm 1 and 21 to Arm 2. Demographics included 10 men (various tumor types but mostly multiple myeloma) and 36 women; 22 with breast cancer. MyMeds app lacked the necessary real-time communication so patients were switched to the MediSafe app which features email alerts. 15 patients have completed the study through Month 3. Four patients on Arm 1 missing their monthly visit or were non-compliant with the app. 23 patients remain active in the study. Differences are a higher QOL score in Arm 1 vs Arm 2 in measured domains of Energy/Fatigue (56% in Arm 1 compared to 44% for Arm 2) and Pain (72% in Arm 1 compared to 58% in Arm 2). Patients randomized to the app found the electronic alerts very helpful. Conclusions: Our limited pilot study demonstrated the potential of smart device apps as effective communication tools for improving patients’ adherence to oral anti-cancer therapy and QOL. Ultimately, convenient ways to monitor patients’ compliance with anti-cancer therapy will impact survival and facilitate provider-patient communication.

With the development of mentoring networks, communication between mentors and mentees and related problems in entrepreneurship have become an increasingly important topic in recent years. The aim of the research is to identify the most important problems that hinder an effective communication process between the mentor and the mentee in entrepreneurship based on expert opinions on the elements of and barriers to the communication process. The research results have revealed that mentors’ willingness to communicate, appropriately engaging in dialogue with their mentees, as well as honour and other skills and traits are essential. The experts have emphasized that it is important that the mentee does not take the mentor’s experience literally but critically assesses whether his/her resources are aligned with the goal. According to the experts, the most essential barriers to communication were a lack of time and logical barriers and obstacles that emerged to partners with different ways of thinking. Researchers need to continue the research started by the authors of the paper by working on and designing a communication model for mentors and mentees, taking into account the communication barriers identified in the present research and other factors relevant to communication in entrepreneurship.

This paper describes the architecture of AgentSimJs, a Javascript-based multi-agent simulator intended to execute and visualize simulations through a Web browser. It includes the needed capabilities to render a 3D scene with objects and agents. AgentSimJs has a modular architecture, the several different components provide a set of flexible primitives to program the agent behaviour. With AgentSimJs, a user can perform a fine tuning of all the aspects related to communication, motion, and group formation. Users can also define a custom network topology and communication model.

Cloud Computing IT infrastructure has the potential to be particularly suitable for collaborative commerce (c-commerce) applications; because it generally requires less efforts and interferences for development, customization, integration, operation, and maintenance than other traditional IT infrastructures (e.g., on-premises and data centers). However, upgrading c-commerce applications running on traditional IT infrastructures, to run efficiently on cloud computing infrastructure, faces a number of challenges, mainly, lack of effective and reliable architectural model. This paper presents a description of a new architectural model for developing cloud computing based c-commerce applications; which is denoted as cc-commerce model. The model is an basically based on the standard cloud computing model, and it consists of six main components; these are: client, provider, auditor, broker, security and privacy, and communications network. The new model is implemented in a simple and flexible Web-based test tool, namely, the cc-commerce test (3CT) tool, which is used to evaluate the performance of the model through measuring the response times for four different configurations. The analysis of the obtained results demonstrates that the cc-commerce model can provide better response time than equivalent c-commerce models.
