Background: The nurse's verbal and non-verbal communication greatly affects the readiness of the patient and the patient's family to undergo surgery. Unclear communication causes misperceptions and the emergence of communication barriers in the nurse-client interaction process. The limited time and information provided are the causes of communication barriers in the client care process. This of course greatly affects patient care, especially in conditions that require intensive care. Methods: This study aims to determine the relationship between verbal and non-verbal communication between nurses and perceptions of communication barriers in families of pre-surgery patients in the intensive care unit, with a correlation design using a Cross Sectional study approach. The number of samples was 95 families of preoperative patients in the intensive care unit using purposive sampling technique. Results: 51.6% of nurses' verbal communication was good, and 50.5% of nurses' nonverbal communication was good, and there were no communication barriers between nurses and patients' families (54.7%). There was a significant relationship between nurses' verbal communication with perceptions of family communication barriers in pre-surgery patients in the intensive room (P=0.001) and there was a correlation between nurses' nonverbal communication with perceptions of family communication barriers in pre- surgery patients in the intensive room (P=0.002). Recommendation: Nurses are expected to continue to communicate effectively verbal and non-verbal with patients and families to prevent barriers in communication

This research investigates the communication barriers between designers and engineers in designing 4D Printing parts. We have proposed a conceptual design framework for 4D Printing symbols as the communication tool. Then, we have recruited sixty-fifty designers and engineers who participated in our online experiments. The focus of the online survey is to find out how designers and engineers understand reciprocal communication by using the proposed symbols. Our results showed that 85% of participants could understand the 4D Printing symbols correctly. The study concludes that using the conceptual framework can help designers and engineers communicate 4D Printing element information and stimulate design ideas effectively.

Communication formulates a large part of a consultation and as a practitioner, it is vital to communicate effectively with a patient. Jamara Hignett provides an overview of the communication barriers that affect medication adherence in patients with learning disabilities Having a disability that affects communication can cause particular problems in primary care as inadequate communication can lead to the wrong diagnosis, poor assessments and inadequate health care ( Murphy, 2006 ). All patients are entitled to accessible and appropriate information on prescribed medication to facilitate a deeper understanding of the benefits and harms of treatment ( Grime et al, 2007 ). Reasonable adjustments should be made for learning difficultly patients and this can be in the form of easy reads guides that incorporate larger text, simple information and pictorial explanations. Communication passports are a tool used by people with learning disabilities; these provide both a practical and person-centred approach to passing on key information about people with complex communication difficulties ( Nursing Times, 2018 ). They provide information about the communication needs and health needs of a patient which is useful to assist in bridging the communication gap between nurse practitioner and patient. In a time of technological advancements, a move towards digital passports would be more beneficial with regular updates from the multidisciplinary team. This in turn can be shared across numerous health platforms the patient might come into contact with, allowing the nurse practitioner to better prepare for the patient prior to their consultation. Education on learning disabilities is an area of training that is lacking in general practice; there have been no provisions made to make the training mandatory. Incorporating mandatory yearly staff training will ensure nurse practitioners have the tools and knowledge to adapt communication techniques during a consultation.

Translation of messages between two languages has been very challenging among translators. Translations have led to the filling of gaps in communication barriers so that equivalence and accuracy are achieved in the process of transfer of messages from one language to another. This paper aims to examine the role of a translator in filling the communication gap between the Source Language (SL) and the Target Language (TL). These gaps are known as translation problems or difficulties as a means of solving them. We apply the interpretative and comparative approaches of translation. This is achieved through the extract of texts from the English and French versions of our corpus. The main objectives of the paper are i) to examine some concepts in translation ii) to identify some gaps in translation, and iii) to determine the approach that fits better in translating discourse messages with varied contexts. Among the findings of the study are instances of gap filling in communication as no two languages see a concept in the same way that includes i) set and series, ii) cultural words, and iii) neologism. The study concludes that equivalent is the key to achieving successful translation across cultures.

Communication during the treatment process is vital as it relates directly to the treatment outcomes. For patients and their family members, obtaining and possessing reliable information is essential for building successful and strong communication between physician, patient and in cases of paediatric cancer, the official guardians of the child and family members. The purpose of the study is to identify and analyse communication barriers in communication between physicians and parents (guardians), medical staff and parents (guardians) of paediatric cancer patients. Materials and methods. A retrospective cohort research among parents of paediatric cancer patients who took care of their children while receiving programmed chemotherapy was carried out. The information was collected indirectly: the information was provided by respondents remotely and anonymously using Google Forms. Results. The survey involved 106 family members of paediatric cancer patients receiving treatment at Ukrainian medical institutions specializing in the paediatric cancer treatment. 66% (n=70) of the respondents indicated that it was difficult to find contact with physicians; 85% (n=90) of respondents stated that it was difficult to find the contact with nurses and medical staff; 39,2% of the respondents reported the communication lapses with their attending physicians because the latter were busy and had no enough time to communicate. Considering that the overwhelming majority of respondents (79, 3%) noted physicians and medical staff as the most convenient source of reliable information on paediatric cancer, the researchers proposed to create an information platform for parents of paediatric cancer patients in order to provide access to information on the main issues of paediatric cancer. Conclusions. The research has revealed the following challenges: lack of adequate communication between the patients’ parents and physicians and / or medical staff; parents’ feeling unprepared to receive and comprehend information because of emotional trauma; poor communication between parents and physicians and / or medical staff due to the lack of time. A tool to eliminate these communication barriers can be suggested: this implies the creation of a video channel with visual thematic and clearly structured content for parents of paediatric cancer patients.

Safety workarounds stay a crucial concern for employers, significantly within the healthcare industry wherever hospital nurses' safety has deteriorated throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This pilot study used descriptive and correlational analyses to explore and analyse the reliability of the constructs of communication barriers, work engagement, and burnout on safety workarounds, and also their relationship. This study was conducted with 30 registered nurses in public hospitals in the State of Perak, Malaysia. The results showed that all scales to measure burnout, work engagement, communication barriers, and safety workaround had moderate to excellent feasibility and had sufficient test-retest reliability. The results also indicate that all two independent factors, namely burnout and communication barrier, were shown to be negatively and significantly correlated with safety workaround, whereas work engagement was found to be positively and significantly correlated with safety workaround. This study is anticipated to fill a spot within the literature as a result of there hasn't been a lot of analysis on nurses' safety workarounds within the Malaysian setting. These results may contribute to a stronger understanding of the constructs of communication barriers, work engagement, and burnout and how to deal with safety workaround of registered nurses in Malaysian public hospitals.

The COVID-19 pandemic poses a great risk to older people with hearing impairment, who face a higher threshold of external communication after the implementation of the emergency isolation policy. As part of a study on the optimization of external communication among the deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) population in central China, this study employed a qualitative research method based on in-depth interviews to explore the needs and difficulties faced by the older DHH group in external communication during public health emergencies in Wuhan, China, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that older DHH people had weak reception of critical information about the epidemic, and had suboptimal access to medical care during emergency quarantine, which increased interpersonal communication barriers to this group. The current findings highlight the urgent need for targeted strengthening of the original emergency communication and coordination mechanisms in public health emergencies, and for improving policy inclusiveness for older DHH individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic and emergencies alike.
