In this paper, to address the problem of positioning accumulative errors of the inertial navigation system (INS), a bionic autonomous positioning mechanism integrating INS with a bioinspired polarization compass is proposed. In addition, the bioinspired positioning system hardware and the integration model are also presented. Concerned with the technical issue of the accuracy and environmental adaptability of the integrated positioning system, the sun elevation calculating method based on the degree of polarization (DoP) and direction of polarization (E-vector) is presented. Moreover, to compensate for the latitude and longitude errors of INS, the bioinspired positioning system model combining the polarization compass and INS is established. Finally, the positioning performance of the proposed bioinspired positioning system model was validated via outdoor experiments. The results indicate that the proposed system can compensate for the position errors of INS with satisfactory performance.

The planning and operation of urban buses depend heavily on the time-varying origin-destination (OD) matrix for bus passengers. In most cities, however, only boarding information is recorded, while the alighting information is not available. This paper proposes a novel method to predict the destination of a single bus passenger based on bus smartcard data, metro smartcard data, and global positioning system (GPS) bus data. First, the attractiveness of each bus stop in a bus line was evaluated, considering the attractiveness of nearby metro stations. Then, the exploration and preferential return (EPR) model was employed to estimate the probability of a bus stop to be the alighting stop, i.e., the destination, of a passenger. The estimation result was obtained through a simulation based on the Monte Carlo (MC) algorithm. The effectiveness of our method was proved through a case study on the bus network in Shenzhen, China.

AbstractBackground:The surgical trainee has to acquire surgical skills in an era of reduced training hours and greater demands for efficient use of operating theatre time. Many surgical specialties are utilising model and simulation-based training to provide safe, low-pressure training opportunities for today's trainee.Method and results:This paper describes a simple, relatively inexpensive tonsillectomy model that enables the practice of tonsil removal and ligation of bleeding vessels. The model is beneficial for the patient, trainee and trainer.Conclusion:The pseudo mouth and active bleeding components of this model provide the trainee with a relatively inexpensive, realistic model with which to gain confidence and competence in the skill of ligating tonsillar blood vessels with a tonsil tie.
