The torque ripple is affected by both the stator and the rotor magnetic field harmonics. In synchronous reluctance motors (SynRM), there are only rotor permeance harmonics existing on the rotor side for the absence of the rotor windings. Since the asymmetric rotor flux barriers are widely applied in the SynRM rotor, it is difficult to calculate the rotor permeance accurately by the analytical method. In this article, the effects of the rotor permeance harmonics on the air-gap magnetic field are studied by a virtual permanent magnet harmonic machine (VPMHM), which is a finite-element (FE) based magnetostatic analysis model. The air-gap flux density harmonics produced by the SynRM rotor are extracted from the VPMHM model and used as the intermediate variables for the torque ripple optimization. The proposed method does not need to solve the transient process of motor motion. Hence, the time of the optimization process can be significantly shortened. Finally, a full electric cycle is simulated by dynamic FE simulation, and the torque ripple is proved to be effectively reduced.

The application of an inverter is becoming more and more widespread in the surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motor (SMPMSM). A large number of voltage harmonics can be generated by the inverter. The electromagnetic torque, loss, and air-gap magnetic density of the SMPMSM are affected by voltage harmonic. To analyze its influence, taking a 3 kW 1500 r/min SMPMSM as an example, a two-dimensional transient electromagnetic field model is established. The correctness of the model is verified by comparing the experimental data with the calculated data. Firstly, the finite element method is used to calculate the electromagnetic field of the SMPMSM, and the performance parameters of the SMPMSM are obtained. Based on these parameters, the influence of voltage harmonic on motor performance is analyzed quantitatively. Secondly, the influence of the voltage harmonic on the air-gap magnetic field is analyzed, and the influence degree of the time harmonic on the air-gap magnetic field is determined. At the same time, torque ripple, average torque, and loss are studied when the different harmonics orders, amplitudes, and phase angles are contained in voltage, and the variation is obtained. Finally, the variation mechanism of eddy current loss is revealed. The conclusion of this paper provides reliable theoretical guidance for improving motor performance.

In order to reduce the influence of the harmonics of the air-gap magnetic field on PMSM performance, in this paper, the method which is to add auxiliary grooves in the rotor surface is proposed to optimize the air-gap magnetic field of PMSM and reduce the iron loss, torque ripple and noise-vibration caused by the harmonics. During the process, the orthogonal experimental method and the time-stepping FEM were used to optimize the structure of the grooves. Analyzed and compared the test-data and the calculated data,it shows that this method can largely improve motors performance.

Purpose Owing to the salient pole structure and stator slots of hydro-generator, the air gap magnetic field in the generator is unevenly distributed. High-frequency harmonic components contained in the inhomogeneous air gap magnetic field will have a negative impact on the generator performance. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to improve the distribution of air gap magnetic field by using appropriate magnetic slot wedge, thereby improving the generator performance. Design/methodology/approach Taking a 24 MW, 10.5 kV bulb tubular turbine generator as an example, the 2 D electromagnetic field model of the generator is established by finite element method. The correctness of the model is verified by comparing the finite element calculation data with the experimental data. The influences of the permeability and thickness of the magnetic slot wedge on the generator performance are studied. Findings It is found that the intensity and harmonic content of the air gap magnetic field will change with the permeability of slot wedge and then the performance parameters of the generator will also change nonlinearly. The relationship between the eddy current loss, torque ripple, output voltage and other parameters of the generator and the permeability of slot wedge is confirmed. In addition, the variation of losses and torque with wedge thickness is also obtained. Originality/value The influence mechanism of magnetic slot wedge on the performance of hydro-generator is revealed. The presented results give guidelines to selecting suitable magnetic slot wedge to improve generator performance.

Abstract The paper presents new designs for synchronous reluctance motors that have external rotor (segment-shaped rotor, rotor with additional non-magnetic space to the quadrature axis of the rotor, and rotor with several flux barriers). Impact of the external rotor configuration on the electromagnetic torque and torque ripple is analysed. Electromagnetic torque ripple factor is calculated for each studied motor using the results of magnetic field numerical calculations.

AbstractAt present, the drivers with different control methods are used in most of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM). A current outputted by a driver contains a large number of harmonics that will cause the PMSM torque ripple, winding heating and rotor temperature rise too large and so on. In this paper, in order to determine the influence of the current harmonics on the motor performance, different harmonic currents were injected into the motor armature. Firstly, in order to study the influence of the current harmonic on the motor magnetic field, a novel decoupling method of the motor magnetic field was proposed. On this basis, the difference of harmonic content in an air gap magnetic field was studied, and the influence of a harmonic current on the air gap flux density was obtained. Secondly, by comparing the fluctuation of the motor torque in the fundamental and different harmonic currents, the influence of harmonic on a motor torque ripple was determined. Then, the influence of different current harmonics on the eddy current loss of the motor was compared and analyzed, and the influence of the drive harmonic on the eddy current loss was obtained. Finally, by using a finite element method (FEM), the motor temperature distribution with different harmonics was obtained.
