The analysis of operating conditions of traction drives of electric locomotives with asynchronous traction motors has been carried out. It was found that during operation in the output converter of an asynchronous motor, defects may occur, which leads to asymmetric modes of its operation. Models of a traction drive of an electric locomotive with asynchronous motors with scalar and vector control of the output converter are proposed, taking into account asymmetric operating modes. As a result of the simulation, the starting characteristics of the traction drive were obtained for various control methods both in normal and emergency modes of the drive. For the drive-in emergency mode, the following cases were investigated: the balance of the converter output voltages and the turn-to-turn circuit of 10% of phase A winding of the motor stator; imbalance of the output voltages of the inverter and an intact motor; imbalance of the output voltages of the converter and interturn short circuit of 10% of phase A winding of the motor stator. Comparison of the simulation results have shown that in emergency modes in the traction drive, the torque ripple on the motor shaft in the drive with vector control is 13% less, and in scalar control, the phase current unbalance coefficient is 22% less. The results of this work can be used to study the influence of the output converter control methods on the energy efficiency indicators of the traction drive of an AC electric locomotive.

This paper investigates a nonlinear modeling optimization of 12s/8p surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous machines (SMPMSM) with a radial magnetization pattern. The modeling is based on subdomain model (SDM) computation, where the analytical models are developed to predict the electromagnetic (EM) performances, such as, average EM torque and EM torque ripple in PM machines. A genetic algorithm is applied to the proposed model in order to search for the optimal solutions. The objective function of the optimizations is obtaining a higher average EM torque and achieving the minimum EM torque ripple. The data, viz, and the average EM torque and its ripples predicted by SDM are employed in regression analysis in order to find the model of best fit. After that, the most suitable fit of the computing equation is selected. The preliminary and optimal designs of 12s/8p PM motors are also compared in terms of parameters and motor performance. As a result, the regression model and GA framework has reduced the use of magnet materials and the EM torque ripple of the SMPMSM, making it ideal for use in an electric car. Lastly, the proposed model can determine the appropriate configuration design parameters for SMPMSM in order to achieve the best motor performance.

This paper addresses an adaptive control approach to achieve high-performance response in phase currents and to minimize torque ripples in uncertain permanent magnet synchronous motor drives. In this manner, the electrical part of the permanent magnet synchronous motor drive is considered completely uncertain by taking the inherent characteristic of the parameters into account. A periodic adaptive controller is formulated in order to achieve the torque ripple reduction in the presence of the time-varying periodic uncertainties. In the sense that the periodic uncertainties appearing in permanent magnet synchronous motor drives change by the angular position, a change of the time variable is applied in the formulation of the proposed adaptive controller, and the stability analysis is conducted accordingly utilizing a Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional. Extensive numerical simulations are successfully performed for various operation points to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper presents a method to extend the DC bus utilization on an induction motor (IM) by using a combination of Space-Vector Modulated Direct Torque Control (DTC–SVM) and conventional DTC. The scheme proposed in this paper exploits the advantages of both control methods. During the linear region, it allows for a low torque ripple and low current harmonic distortion (THD). During the overmodulation region, it allows for the fastest torque response up to the six-step operation region. In both regions, there is complete independence of the motor parameters. The paper describes a way to provide a smooth transition between the two control schemes. Non-linearities affect the stator flux angle estimation, which leads to the inability to decouple torque and flux. To overcome this problem, a novel PI-based control scheme as well as a simplification on the decoupling terms’ calculation are proposed. Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the feasibility of the proposed method.

For the optimization of three-phase hybrid stepper motors with complex electromagnetic structures, an optimization method is presented in this paper. The method is a combination of 3D-FEM and the Taguchi optimization method intended to reduce the dependence on FEM results during the optimization calculation. In this paper, the optimization method is used in the optimization of the tooth shape of the three-phase hybrid stepper motor, and the objective is to reduce the noise caused by harmonics in the “torque-angle characteristic” of the motor. It is clear that traditional optimization methods make it very difficult to carry out such an optimization calculation as a large number of finite element calculations have to be used in the optimization process, and the required computation time is extremely long. Using the optimization method presented in the paper, the optimization becomes feasible because the number of finite element calculations is greatly reduced and the computation time is thus greatly reduced. In order to check the effectiveness of the optimization, the waterfall diagram for noise analysis and its application to check torque ripple are also presented in the paper. Both simulation and test results show that the optimized structure can significantly reduce the motor noise caused by torque ripple. Therefore, the optimization method proposed in this paper can be an effective tool for the optimal design of high-performance motors, including stepper motors.

This paper presents an alternative system called the axial-flux dual-stator toothless permanent magnet machine (AFDSTPMM) system for flywheel energy storage. This system lowers self-dissipation by producing less core loss than existing structures; a permanent magnet (PM) array is put forward to enhance the air–gap flux density of the symmetrical air gap on both sides. Moreover, its vertical stability is strengthened through the adoption of an axial-flux machine, so expensive active magnetic bearings can be replaced. The symmetry configuration of the AFDSTPMM system is shown in this paper. Then, several parts of the AFDSTPMM system are optimized thoroughly, including stator windings, number of pole pairs and the PM parameters. Further, the performance of the proposed PM array, including back-EMFs, air–gap flux density, average torque, torque ripple and over-load capacity, are compared with the Halbach PM array and spoke PM array, showing the superiority of proposed configuration. Finally, 3D simulations were made to testify for the 2D analyses.

A new procedure for the design and optimization of the rotor laminations of a synchronous reluctance machine is presented in this paper. The configuration of the laminations is symmetrical and contains fluid-shaped barriers. The parametrization principle is used, which executes variations in the lamination geometry by changing the position, thickness and shape of the flux barriers. Hence, the optimization procedure analyzes the various configurations through finite element simulations, by means of the communication between MATLAB and Flux 2D. In the post processing stage, the best geometry which optimizes mean torque, torque ripple, efficiency and power factor is selected. Once the best rotor configuration is defined, further investigations allow improving its performance by modifying the current angle, the stator winding and the thickness of the radial ribs.

Electric vehicles (EVs) should have an electrical motor with high efficiency, high power density, and a wider constant power operating region, as well as ease of control and inexpensive manufacturing cost. To achieve these requirements, a real-time control-oriented electric motor model is essential. A co-simulation method based on Ansys software (Maxwell and Twin Builder) and MATLAB/Simulink for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) model is presented, which can improve the design of the PMSM and evaluate its performance by Rotating Machine Expert (RMxprt) when any slight modification of parameters and output inaccuracy occur. The PMSM drive system under different input reference speeds was analyzed by simulation, which testified that co-simulation of the magnetic and electrical domain is necessary to capture all applicable effects. The simulation results show the good feasibility of the motor model and control method, which achieves the desired effect and fast response with a small torque ripple as well. Such a developed prototype allows both accurate and simple characterization and optimization to be made possible.
