Abstract Since the discovery of the electron, the accurate detection of electrical charges has been a dream of the scientific community. Owing to some remarkable advantages, micro/nanoelectromechanical system-based resonators have been used to design electrometers with excellent sensitivity and resolution. Here, we demonstrate a novel ultrasensitive charge detection method utilizing nonlinear coupling in two micromechanical resonators. We achieve single-electron charge detection with a high resolution up to 0.197 ± 0.056 $${\mathrm{e}}/\sqrt {{\mathrm{Hz}}}$$ e / Hz at room temperature. Our findings provide a simple strategy for measuring electron charges with extreme accuracy.

Large amplitude cable vibrations are difficult to predict using linear theory due to the presence of sag in the suspended profile. A numerical study was therefore undertaken to investigate the dynamic behaviour of inclined cables excited by imposed displacements. To model the nonlinear nature of cable response, a time domain finite element approach was adopted using nonlinear catenary cable elements. Two types of horizontal displacement patterns were enforced at the upper end of the guy. In the first phase of the study, harmonic displacement histories with a wide range of forcing frequencies were considered. In the second phase, random enforced displacements were used to simulate the motion of a guyed mast in gusty winds. The influence of aerodynamic drag and damping forces was investigated by performing analyses under still air, steady wind, and turbulent wind conditions. It was found that nonlinear coupling of related harmonic response components was significant at certain critical frequencies, particular when the excitation was harmonic and acted in the plane of the guy. Positive aerodynamic damping was shown to effectively suppress resonant and nonlinear coupling response.Key words: cables, structural dynamics, wind loading, finite element method, nonlinear analysis, guyed towers.

SUMMARYIn this paper, a complete model of the elasto-kinematics is formulated in terms of a new kinematic notation, called the algebra of rotations. Based on this formulation, the elegant and concise expressions are derived for the displacement equation and especially the Jacobians governing the motion mapping between the manipulator tip and joint variables as well as link deflections. Introduction of the elasto-kinematics into the elasto-dynamics can directly take into consideration the nonlinear coupling between joint variables and link deflections, and thus improve the result of the elasto-dynamics.

Abstract We show analytically that the nonlinear coupling of a large amplitude electromagnetic wave with finite amplitude ion fluctuations leads to filamentation. The latter consists of striations of the electromagnetic radiation trapped in depressions of the plasma density. The filamentation is found to be either standing or moving normal to the direction of the incoming radiation. Criteria for the existence of localized filaments are obtained. Small amplitude results are discussed.

We propose a new approach to investigate the frequency synchronization in networks of coupled oscillators. By making use of the theory of monotone dynamical systems, we show that frequency synchronization occurs in networks of coupled oscillators, provided the coupling scheme is symmetric, connected, and strongly cooperative. Our criterion is independent of the system size, the coupling strength and the details of the connections, and applies also to nonlinear coupling schemes.
