In this paper, we report a new type of refractometer based on a D-shaped fiber Bragg grating (FBG) integrated in a loop-mirror optical fiber laser. This proposed sensor is used in wavelength interrogation method, in which the D-shaped FBG is applied as a refractive index (RI) sensing probe and a mirror to select mode of laser. The D-shaped FBG is prepared by the removal of a portion of the fiber cladding covering the FBG by means of side-polishing technique. The D-shaped FBG sensing probe integrated in a loop-mirror optical fiber laser with saturated pump technique, the characteristics of sensing signals have been improved to obtain stable intensity, narrower bandwidth and higher optical signal-to-noise ratio compare to normal reflection configuration. The limit of detection (LOD) of this sensor can be achieved to 2.95 x 10-4 RIU in the refractive index (RI) range of 1.42-1.44. Accordingly, we believe that the proposed refractometer has a huge potential for applications in biochemical-sensing technique.

Optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) can achieve the higher precision and sensitivity, but it is disadvantageous for translating optical signal into electrical signal. A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) matched filtering system based on equi-intensity cantilever beam was presented in this paper. Strain characteristics in different location of cantilever beam were described, and the strain sensitivity of matching grating demodulation based on equi-intensity cantilever beam was deduced mathematically. Strain characteristics of cantilever beam were verified, and the sensing effect of the system was tested. The Bragg wavelength shift range of the demodulating FBG placed on the cantilever beam reached 10 nm, and scanning velocity was 0.125 nm/s. The system could demodulate slow-altered sensing signal accurately and rapidly.

In this paper a simplified design and efficient of a Michelson Interferometer (MI) system is presented, capable of reducing the Four-Wave Mixing (FWM) effects, using fiber Bragg grating and acoustic optic filter (FBG and AOF) with the aid of a highly non-linear photonic crystal fiber (HNL-PCF). The analysis of the MI system based in FBG and AOF was performed according to the effect of fiber length and input power by performance metrics: Optical Spectrum, maximum Quality factor (max. Q-factor), minimum bit error rate (min. BER), eye height, optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) and timing jitter. The numerical simulation results showed that the MI system with FBG and AOF maintained a good signal performance, with Q-factor equal to 33.3 even after 100 km of single mode fiber (SMF) and with downstream signal power by up to 10 dBm.
