The photovoltaic (PV) systems are often subject to shading in practical operation. Non-uniform shading for PV array with bypass diodes leads to mismatch in power generation, and thus resulting in multi-peak power-voltage (P-V) characteristics. Most existing maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control strategies are local optimum oreinted, as based on the gradient search or its variations, e.g. perturbation-and-observation (P&O) or extremum seeking control (ESC). The multi-modal P-V characteristics for PV array with variable shading demands for global search for the optimum to avoid the signifiant power loss otherwise. This study investigates both the P-V and the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the PV panel under variable shading. Analytical model is established based on an approximate model of the PV device. The stair-case profile of the I-V relationship is shown to have close and consistent correspondence to the shading distribution. The voltage breakpoints for the multipeak curve are also within predictable ranges. With such results, the global search can be achieved with multiple local search within finite number of intervals. Simulation results validate the analytical modeling and the ESC based global ESC for partially shaded PV panels.

Background: In modern electrical power distribution systems, Power Quality has become an important concern due to the escalating use of automatic, microprocessor and microcontroller based end user applications. Methods: In this paper, power quality improvement has done using Photovoltaic based Distribution Static Compensator (PV-DSTATCOM). Complete simulation modelling and control of Photovoltaic based Distribution Static Compensator have been provided in the presented paper. In this configuration, DSTATCOM is fed by solar photovoltaic array and PV module is also helpful to maintain the DC link voltage. The switching of PV-STATCOM is controlled by Unit template based control theory. Results: The performance of PV-DSTATCOM has been evaluated for Unity Power Factor (UPF) and AC Voltage Control (ACVC) modes. Here, for studying the power quality issues three-phase distribution system is considered and results have been verified through simulation based on MATLAB software. Conclusion: Different power quality issues and their improvement are studied and presented here for harmonic reduction, DC voltage regulation and power factor correction.

This paper presents a smartphone application game that aims to increase the awareness of preschoolers on renewable energy. The age of the selected preschoolers is in the range of 4-6 years. The game is called DAYSAM, and it aims to increase awareness regarding photovoltaic arrays, wind turbines, mini-hydropower stations, energy efficiency, and risks that polar bears are facing. The game provides two superior features compared to other available games in Arabic language, targeting the same age group. Preschoolers from An-Najah Child Institute are selected to play this game to investigate the impact of this game. The preschoolers’ awareness is tested before and after playing the game using coloring sheets in an unsupervised coloring process. The results show that the proposed game has increased preschooler’s awareness of renewable energy. Before playing the game, none of the preschoolers recognized images like the photovoltaic array or the wind turbine. After playing the game the preschoolers recognized these devices in different situations and shapes. This indicates that such a game can be used as a fun and educational tool in nurseries that have Arabic communication medium to increase awareness of renewable energy.
