In this article I report on psychological explanations for those linguistic and educational problems that arise as a result of the accelerated loss of ethnic diversity among european indigenous minorities. I have used knowledge from psychology of learning and psychology of motivation (for example unsuitable impulsive behaviour connected to executive functions, or culture shock) to describe the mechanisms of language shift and language loss connected to education There is a lack of such attempts in linguistic nad educational literature. The debates between representatives of pluralistic conceptions and their opponents on the possible linguistic and educational objectives in heterogeneous communities are presented. In addition, I also formulated guidelines how to mitigate the consequences of decrease of linguistic and cultural diversity on mind and behaviour of people who live and receive education in heterogeneous settings.

This mixed method research accomplished a literature review about acculturation on the earlier The American Journal of Sociology. The word acculturation scarcely appeared. However, topics related to acculturation were usual, i.e., race, immigration, colonial, intercultural influence, and still gender. Assimilation, multicultural and fusion works appeared, and the pervasive was the multicultural model. The research found out that the multicultural model was grounded in the 19th century. Multiculturalism had its roots on the liberal WASP culture. As Herbert Spencer, the journal often praised minimal intercultural contact in order to achieve maintenance and cultural diversity. The pervasive attitude wanted cultural adaptation with cultural maintenance, and, at the same time, it vindicated the WASP cultural superiority. Integration of differentiated categories of thought, races, genders, and migrants were organized mainly by progress, competition, and social dominance narratives, and it impaired the culture of the separated but equal.

Abstract The everyday contact with people from different nationalities is nowadays a reality. Cultural Intelligence and Multicultural Personality are individual competencies that are becoming important to deal with this reality. In this study, with 313 Portuguese participants, of both genders, with different types of intercultural contact, our purpose is to observe the effect of the intercultural contact on cultural intelligence and multicultural personality levels. The results show that there is a significant relation between the cultural intelligence and multicultural personality levels and the type of contact with individuals from different nationalities. Both cultural intelligence and multicultural personality have strong implications for a work context that is more and more characterized by cultural diversity.
