Abstract The everyday contact with people from different nationalities is nowadays a reality. Cultural Intelligence and Multicultural Personality are individual competencies that are becoming important to deal with this reality. In this study, with 313 Portuguese participants, of both genders, with different types of intercultural contact, our purpose is to observe the effect of the intercultural contact on cultural intelligence and multicultural personality levels. The results show that there is a significant relation between the cultural intelligence and multicultural personality levels and the type of contact with individuals from different nationalities. Both cultural intelligence and multicultural personality have strong implications for a work context that is more and more characterized by cultural diversity.

Objectives. The research aimed to examine the relationship between the different types ofadult attachment in (secure type, anxious and avoidant type) and relationship satisfaction. Also examine between relationship satisfaction and intimacy, commitment and passion.Sample and setting. The research sample consisted of 120 respondents aged 18 to 26 years (M= 22.54, SD = 1.71), students of the university. The sample consisted of 97 women and 23men.Hypotheses. We assume that a secure adult attachment would be positively related torelationship satisfaction. On the contrary, in the case of anxious and avoidant adultattachment, we assume a negative attitude towards relationship satisfaction. We assume thatintimacy, commitment and passion would be positively related to relationship satisfaction.Statistical analysis. Multiple linear hierarchical regression (stepwise method) was performedto verify the relations between the different types of adult attachment, intimacy, commitment, passion and relationship satisfaction.Results. Our research confirmed the relationship between adult attachment and relationshipsatisfaction, which was one of our main findings. Respondents who showed a secure type ofadult attachment were statistically more satisfied in a relationship than those who showedanxious or avoidant behavior. Another important finding was the significant relation betweenthe love component - intimacy and couple relationship satisfaction.Study limitation. As a possible limitation of our study, we consider that the data were obtainedonly from one of the partners.

With the aim of observing to what extent intercultural contact is a predictor of cultural intelligence, and the relationship between cultural intelligence, type of intercultural contact, gender and education, descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were conducted using the ANOVA and t-test. With a sample of 661 individuals, results show that intercultural contact is a predictor of cultural intelligence and that men and individuals who possess superior level studies present higher cultural intelligence means. Those who maintain intercultural contact with friends or family present superior cultural intelligence means in metacognitive and motivational dimensions and individuals who maintain an intercultural contact in professional environment present high score at the level of cognitive and behavioral dimensions.

Based on an interview study of neonatal nurses, this article sets out to explore the management of emotions within a work context where their suppression is a professional requirement. Drawing on Bolton’s (2000a, 2000b) identification of different types of organizational emotionality, in particular prescriptive and philanthropic emotion management, the article seeks to demonstrate the complexities involved in the performance of emotional labour. It does this by first exploring the times when a nurse chooses to perform one form of emotion management over another (e.g. prescriptive over philanthropic). Second, the article examines the relationship between these two forms of emotion management, taking into account their gendered nature and highlighting the existence of any tensions between them. Lastly, it considers how nurses create informal communities of coping (Korczynski, 2003) as a means of dealing with the consequences of having to move between these two different forms of emotion management.

Abstract — This study aims to investigate the relationship between the sociocultural adjustment and cultural intelligence in Indonesian students who study abroad. Sociocultural adjustment is the ability and competence to adapt in a new environment by facing everyday life difficulties in different cultural contexts. Cultural intelligence is an individual's ability to learn, manage, and interact in order to work effectively with culturally different societies. Cultural intelligence has two dimensions: internalised cultural knowledge intelligence (ICK) and effective cultural flexibility (ECF). Participants in this study were 105 Indonesian students who studied abroad at the time they participate. The data was processed with partial correlation by controlling for sex and the use of English. The results showed that ICK has a significant relation to sociocultural adjustment, while ECF is not significantly related to sociocultural adjustment. The findings highlight the importance of students to deepen the cultural and all aspects of the destination country in order to adapt well.

The objective of this study is to compare the levels of cultural intelligence (CQ) and multicultural personality (MP) of expatriates and non-expatriates, according to the degree of intercultural contact, and to observe the predictive effect of CQ and MP in passion for work and satisfaction with life. Through a sample of 97 participants, a study with one-factor design 3 (intercultural contact degree: expatriates, non-expatriates with maximum intercultural contact and non-expatriates with minimum intercultural contact) was conducted. CQ and MP levels were compared, according to the degree of intercultural contact resorting to ANOVA one-way. The predictive effect of CQ and MP in passion for work and satisfaction with life was also evaluated by means of regression analysis. Expatriates, compared to the non-expatriates had higher levels of CQ, MP, passion for work and satisfaction with life. Multicultural skills such as CQ and MP were predictors of passion for work and satisfaction with life. As limitations, we can point out the small size of the samples and the fact that there is no control of individual variables. Passion for work and satisfaction with life are essential to promote individuals’ positive functioning, so the identification of their predictors is of utmost importance, both at individual and organizational levels. Understanding the impact of intercultural contact, CQ and MP on the performance of individuals, teams and organizations in multicultural contexts is an asset to global organizations and societies.

This article sheds conceptual and empirical light on the ways in which urban physical space and homelessness intersect by considering three focal questions: (a) What are the key spatial concepts necessary for understanding the relationship between urban space and homeless survival strategies and routines, (b) what are the central strategies used within communities to control the homeless spatially or ecologically, and (c) how do the homeless respond to these constraints and impositions? These questions are explored conceptually and empirically with data on spatial contestations drawn from the local newspapers of a southwestern city between 1992 and 1997. The findings illuminate the sociospatial dynamics of homelessness and underscore how a thoroughgoing understanding of the everyday routines and adaptive strategies of the homeless requires consideration of how different types of urban space affect the homeless and of the ways in which the homeless negotiate and respond to the spatial constraints with which they are confronted.
