The Dinosaur Park Formation (DPF) of Alberta, Canada, has produced one of the most diverse dinosaur faunas, with the record favouring large-bodied taxa, in terms of number and completeness of skeletons. Although small theropods are well documented in the assemblage, taxonomic assessments are frequently based on isolated, fragmentary skeletal elements. Here we reassess DPF theropod biodiversity using morphological comparisons, high-resolution biostratigraphy, and morphometric analyses, with a focus on specimens/taxa originally described from isolated material. In addition to clarifying taxic diversity, we test whether DPF theropods preserve faunal zonation/turnover patterns similar to those previously documented for megaherbivores. Frontal bones referred to a therizinosaur (cf. Erlikosaurus), representing among the only skeletal record of the group from the Campanian–Maastrichtian (83–66 Ma) fossil record of North America, plot most closely to troodontids in morphospace, distinct from non-DPF therizinosaurs, a placement supported by a suite of troodontid anatomical frontal characters. Postcranial material referred to cf. Erlikosaurus in North America is also reviewed and found most similar in morphology to caenagnathids, rather than therizinosaurs. Among troodontids, we document considerable morphospace and biostratigraphic overlap between Stenonychosaurus and the recently described Latenivenatrix, as well as a variable distribution of putatively autapomorphic characters, calling the validity of the latter taxon into question. Biostratigraphically, there are no broad-scale patterns of faunal zonation similar to those previously documented in ornithischians from the DPF, with many theropods ranging throughout much of the formation and overlapping extensively, possibly reflecting a lack of sensitivity to environmental changes, or other cryptic ecological or evolutionary factors.

<p>Espiritu Santo is one of the 82 islands of the archipelago of Vanuatu and is the largest, highest, and most biodiverse of the insular country. Climatic changes linked to El Niño and extreme events such as cyclones and volcanic eruptions are a daily challenge in this remote area. These events can be recorded in sedimentary archives. Here we present a multi-proxy investigation of sediment cores retrieved from two small lakes located on the West coast of Espiritu Santo. Although the records span the last millennium, high-resolution radiocarbon dating of macrofossils reveals a rapid accumulation of sediment in the past 100 years. The high accumulation rate coupled with the high-resolution dating of freshwater sediments allows us to compare the <sup>14</sup>C bomb curve with the biogeochemical proxies of the sedimentary records. The results can then be validated against written and oral historical records linked with the societal perception of recent environmental changes in this vulnerable ecosystem.</p><div> <div title="Translate selected text"></div> <div title="Play"></div> <div title="Copy text to Clipboard"></div> </div>

AbstractGeomorphological mapping revealed five terminal moraines in the central Verkhoyansk Mountains. The youngest terminal moraine (I) was formed at least 50 ka ago according to new IRSL (infrared optically stimulated luminescence) dates. Older terminal moraines in the western foreland of the mountains are much more extensive in size. Although the smallest of these older moraines, moraine II, has not been dated, moraine III is 80 to 90 ka, moraine IV is 100 to 120 ka, and the outermost moraine V was deposited around 135 ka. This glaciation history is comparable to that of the Barents and Kara ice sheet and partly to that of the Polar Ural Mountains regarding the timing of the glaciations. However, no glaciation occurred during the global last glacial maximum (MIS 2). Based on cirque orientation and different glacier extent on the eastern and western flanks of the Verkhoyansk Mountains, local glaciations are mainly controlled by moisture transport from the west across the Eurasian continent. Thus glaciations in the Verkhoyansk Mountains not only express local climate changes but also are strongly influenced by the extent of the Eurasian ice sheets.

Abstract. The Permian–Triassic boundary section in the Aras Valley in NW Iran is investigated with respect to carbonate microfacies, biostratigraphy (particularly conodonts, nautiloids, and ammonoids), chemostratigraphy (carbon isotopes), and environmental setting. Correlation of the data allows the establishment of a high-resolution stratigraphy based on conodonts (with four Wuchiapingian, 10 Changhsingian, and three Griesbachian zones), ammonoids (with nine Changhsingian zones), and carbon isotopes; it forms the base for the reconstruction of the environmental changes before and after the end-Permian extinction event at the studied locality. In the Aras Valley section, there is no evidence for the development of anoxic conditions, associated with the end-Permian mass extinction.

<p>The Jurassic was punctuated by several episodes of abrupt environmental changes associated with climatic instabilities, severe biotic crisis, and perturbations of the global carbon cycle. Over the last decades, the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (Early Jurassic, ~183 Ma) and the early Bajocian Event (Middle Jurassic, ~170–168 Ma) have attracted much attention because they represent such episodes of global and severe environmental change. Bracketed in between the Toarcian and the Bajocian, the Aalenian stage (Middle Jurassic, ~174-170 Ma) has received less attention, although there is some evidence from Tethyan and Boreal records that it was a time of environmental changes marked by marine biotic turnovers. The lack of knowledge about the Aalenian palaeoenvironments leaves a gap in our understanding of the wider context of the Toarcian and Bajocian events and hence of environmental feedback mechanisms surrounding Mesozoic carbon cycle perturbations. In this study, we provide a high-resolution, biostratigraphically well-defined carbon isotope records (<em>δ</em><sup>13</sup>C<sub>org </sub>and <em>δ</em><sup>13</sup>C<sub>carb</sub>) combined to Rock-Eval data for the upper Toarcian–lower Bajocian interval from two expanded marl/limestone alternation successions from France (French Subalpine Basin) and Chile (Andean Basin). The comparison with available records from the Tethyan and Boreal domains highlights that medium-term <em>δ</em><sup>13</sup>C fluctuations are reproducible across different palaeoceanographic settings from both hemispheres and between different carbon substrates. The new high-resolution dataset highlights the complexity of the Aalenian <em>δ</em><sup>13</sup>C record, including previously identified <em>δ</em><sup>13</sup>C shifts and hitherto undescribed fluctuations. This study provides one of the most expanded high-resolution chemostratigraphic reference records for the entire Aalenian stage, and shows compelling evidence from both hemispheres that it was a time marked by recurrent perturbations to the global carbon cycle and environmental changes.</p><p> </p>
