The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of anti-Neospora caninum antibodies in cattle from milk producing farms of the microregion of Batalha, state of Alagoas, Brazil, as well as to identify the risk factors associated with the infection. Blood samples were collected from 1,004 cattle of 17 farms for the serological investigation regarding the presence of anti-N. caninum antibodies by the Indirect Immunofluorescence Reaction Technique (IMRT). From the total amount of samples analyzed, 77/1,004 (7.67%) were positive and 927/1,004 (92.33%) were negative. The logistical regression identified that cattle from farms without consortium breeding have an infection risk 6.33 (p<0.001; C.I. 2.89-13.10) times higher than cattle from farms with that type of breeding. Cattle from farms where the aborted fetuses are not adequately buried have an infection risk 3.04 (p<0.001; C.I. 1.64-5.63) times higher than cattle from farms with adequate destination of these fetuses. Infection by N. caninum occurs in cattle of the investigated region. The factors identified in our study can be used as risk indicators, so that control measures could be implemented to avoid infection by N. caninum in the herds of this region.

We used ELISA and PCR for laboratory verification of West Nile fever (MUC 4.2.3009-12). We analyzed serum and whole blood samples which had been sent to West Nile fever reference monitoring centre in 2018–2019. A total of 270 blood samples obtained from patients with presumed viral encephalitis of unknown etiology, acute respiratory viral infection, acute respiratory viral infection, meningitis, acute gastroenteritis were analyzed. Antibodies against WNV were detected in 193 (71,4 %) blood samples, while 146 samples were found to be capable of developing an immune response with viral RNA not being detected in them. Both WNV antibodies and viral RNA were detected in 47 (17,4 %) samples tested. WNV RNA was detected in only 14 (5,1 %) cases. Thus, laboratory confirmation of WNF was obtained in 76,6 % of cases (207 out of 270).

Objective. To describe clinical and laboratory features of COVID-19 in children admitted to the hospital.Children characteristics and research methods. The authors carried out a retrospective observational study, which included 204 children admitted to the Kazan hospital with a diagnosis of “new coronavirus infection” in the period from May 1 to October 30, 2020.Results. It was revealed that all hospitalized children had RNA of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (100%) in a smear from the nasopharynx and oropharynx detected by PCR and only 50% of patients were diagnosed with lung tissue lesions by computed tomography. The clinical picture of COVID-19 in children most often corresponds to the classic manifestations of a respiratory viral infection. Risk factors for the development of severe forms, described in adults, were recorded only in isolated cases in our study.Conclusion. The clinical picture of COVID-19 in children most often corresponds to the classic manifestations of a respiratory viral infection. AbstractThe fundamental dose-response relation is still missing for better evaluating and controlling the transmission risk of COVID-19. A recent study by Chu et al. has indicated that the anticipated probability of viral infection is about 12.8% within 1 m and about 2.6% at further distance through a systematic review and meta-analysis. This important information provides us a unique opportunity to assess the dose-response relation of the viruses, if reasonable exposure dose could be estimated. Here we developed a simple framework to integrate the a priori dose-response relation for SARS-CoV based on mice experiments, and the recent data on infection risk and viral shedding, to shed light on the dose-response relation for human. The developed dose-response relation is an exponential function with a constant k in the range of 6.19×104 to 7.28×105 virus copies. The result mean that the infection risk caused by one virus copy in viral shedding is about 1.5×10−6 to 1.6×10−5. The developed dose-response relation provides a tool to quantify the magnitude of the infection risk.
