Simulation in flight safety - what can we learn from the airline industry?

This article is dealing with airline industry standards regarding reliability reporting and with practical aspects of reliability program deployment within an operator’s organization. Reliability program is a tool for monitoring the effectiveness of aircraft maintenance program. Apart from being an effective tool for maintenance program development, the reliability program can bring to light flaws in aircraft design, discrepant operational procedures, discrepancies in line and base maintenance. Reliability program is also considered to provide very valuable means for achieving better operational performance (through decreased maintenance-related problems in operation) and increased flight safety. For this reason, reliability programs are mandated by the regulations for all commercial operators. Even though there is a general industry standard regarding maintenance reliability programs, it still has to be customized and optimized by each operator in order to gain the most out of it. Organizational procedures will vary significantly from one operator to another, reflecting the size and structure of the monitored fleet, size of the operator and its engineering power. As maintenance reliability program involves the application of statistic methods in finding systematic negative trends, the bigger the size of the fleet, the more accurate and reliable results can be achieved. This work is outlining the existing airline industry standards and good practice in carrying out maintenance reliability program. Since the Government of Indonesia made deregulation in several aspect of aviation industry early of this century, the development of airline industry shows thremendestly. There are many new Low Cost Air Carrier “growing up like mushrum in the rainy season”. Some of side effect of this fast growing are concerning with flight safety, especialy in maintenance, human resources and operational aspects. Flight Safety is mandatory in all aspect of aviation industry, there is no room for relaxation or dispensation regarding safety. Air crew especialy Pilot has huges responsibility in Flight Safety during flight, their healthy condition and eligibility of technical of flight should be maintain at all times. Missuse of narcotic will jeoperdize both healthy and ability in their profesional perform. In this journal we will focus on human resources aspect regarding legislation of missuse of narcotic among flight crew and implementation of safety management of aviation personel.

Purpose This paper aims to explore the effectiveness of children as advertisement endorsers in the airline context, including images of safety and reliability. Design/methodology/approach This paper is intended to examine the advertising effect of endorsers (celebrities, CEOs, experts, consumers and children) in the context of the airline industry. A factorial experiment was conducted to test the communication effect (CE) of ten groups of advertisement combinations (five endorser types – with/without safety attribute). Findings The results indicate that a child endorser yielded a better CE than celebrity, CEO or typical consumer endorsers. Second, advertisements that emphasized safety had better CE than those without this emphasis. The group combining children and safety generated a better CE than most of the other groups comprising different combinations. Practical implications A child endorser and a safety message are recommended to be used in advertisements for airlines because flight passengers place importance on safety. Fragile image of child reinforces safety of an airline. Originality/value The integration of advertising endorsement and message into a conceptual model allows the current results to provide meaningful theoretical and practical implications.

Abstract. Compared with other team settings, flight crew in air transport present a unique situation where the leader or supervisor regularly engages in active control. When the captain is assigned cognitively demanding pilot flying duties, the subordinate and often less experienced first officer must perform equally crucial monitoring and support duties. Using a systematic review methodology, this study reviews the reported effect of crew role assignment on flight safety outcomes. Our review identified 18 relevant studies and suggests crew performance factors linked to flight safety are affected by crew role assignment. Findings suggest a greater number of inherent obstacles may exist for optimal crew performance with the captain as pilot flying, raising the need for further specific research and policy review in this area.
