Although the concept of escapism is widely used in entertainment research, it lacks theoretical and empirical differentiation. Based on the transactional model of stress and coping, we extend previous attempts to conceptualize escapism as a form of emotion-focused avoidance coping. In contrast to the primarily negative connotation of escapism found in prior research, we propose that escapist entertainment use may be a functional coping strategy in some situations and may thus have beneficial effects on the well-being of media users. To develop and illustrate our perspective, we turn to binge-watching as a prominent example of escapist entertainment use. We show exemplarily how escapist binge-watching can contribute to recovery from stress and close our chapter with reflections on how to further develop escapism research.

Women constitute an increasingly large segment of the paid workforce. Nevertheless, investigators of work stress have focused predominantly on men and, largely, have ignored possible gender differences. This has led to findings, based on the study of male workers, being incorrectly applied to females. Further, the limited amount of research into work stress and coping that has been published has been vulnerable to criticisms. An analysis of research in this area suggested that gender moderates work stress in three ways: men and women are vulnerable to different stressors relating to work; they utilise different coping strategies to cope with these stressors, and they vary in their perceptions of the resources that they have available to help them to cope. It is important to direct research resources to further investigation of gender differences in these three dimensions. Such research is necessary for the development of effective preventative and treatment programs for occupational stress.

The purpose in this study was to evaluate the severity of stress experienced by student interpreters and the coping strategies that they employed. Our main interest was in determining how well coping strategies could explain the stress caused by interpreting. We used a survey method to collect data from 186 student interpreters at a university in Taiwan. We employed the Interpretation Classroom Anxiety Scale and the Coping Strategy Indicator. The results indicated that approximately 42% of the variance in the development of student interpreters' stress found in this sample could be explained by the coping strategies used. Among 3 coping strategies used, avoidance made the largest significant unique contribution to the explanation of student interpreters' stress.
