This article describes the history, development, and current position of Dutch foundations. In the past, the philanthropy sector and foundations initiated many nonprofit services in the Netherlands. Along with the growth of the welfare state, philanthropy was sidelined. Due to public funding, the pillarized Dutch nonprofit sector extended strongly. However, despite its large scale it shows a special feature. Most nonprofits are still privately governed institutions although publicly funded. In the 1980s, governmental budget cuts forced the nonprofits to embrace the market as income source. A dualistic model got dominancy or state or market. At the end of the 20th century, however, philanthropy revived and a new philanthropy sector emerged. The article addresses the issue of the role of philanthropy in changing (European) welfare states. Are we experiencing further marketization and privatization—toward a so-called Anglo-Saxon shareholder model—or are we seeing a continuation of the so-called Rhineland, multistakeholder model of government, market, and philanthropy?

Abstract Snow Fall in the polder. Interactive multimedia productions in Dutch journalism Interactive multimedia productions are a recent journalistic format. The format has been studied in the Anglo-Saxon context as digital longform and interactive documentary. Research has consequently focused on English language productions. This article presents an overview of these types of productions created in the Netherlands and also proposes an analytical apparatus and conceptualization that does justice to the main properties of this new genre; multimediality and interactivity. The results show that this journalistic form is mainly produced by established national newsrooms. Furthermore, the potential of digital media is used sparsely. Despite the use of complex narrative structures like multi-linear and non-linear stories, familiar media forms are used. Interactive features are mostly utilized to provide additional information to users.

Earlier than in the Anglo-Saxon world, Weber's sociological studies attracted attention among social scientists in the Netherlands. It was particularly in connection with the Southeast A sian world that parallels were suggested with the rise of capitalism in the West.

Italy, as many other countries, adopted the design–build–finance–maintain (DBFMO) Anglo-Saxon model to build new hospitals. This model proved to be rigid, nontransparent, nonvalue for money, and unaffordable. The aim of this article is to analyze the main drawbacks of the traditional DBFMO public–private partnerships (PPP) contract applied to the health care sector, by referring to the Italian experience, and to discuss the evolutions, conceived through an inductive/deductive approach, conducted in a context of deep collaboration between academia, health care authorities, and market players to make PPP contracts more value for money, flexible, and affordable. The article provides also an example of the role of academia in closing the rigor–practice gap by supporting and facilitating an institutional change.
