While earlier marital advice literature treated sexual intercourse as a matter of conditioned instinct, marriage manuals in the mid-twentieth century portrayed it as a skill, and one that was rarely cultivated adequately. The didactic, quantified, objectively examined and rule-bound approach to sex promulgated by these manuals parallels other ways in which Americans subjected their personal and intimate lives to the tutelage of experts. Anxieties about the stability of marriage and family life were both heightened and salved by the authoritative tone of scientific authority used in these books.

BACKGROUND Often, in biology, we are faced with the problem of exploring relevant unknown biological hypotheses in the form of myriads of combination of factors that might be affecting the pathway under certain conditions. Currently, a major problem in biology is to cherry pick the combinations based on expert advice, literature survey or guesses for investigation. The search and wet lab testing of these combinations costs a lot in terms of time, investment and energy. In a recent development of the PORCN-WNT inhibitor ETC-1922159 for colorectal cancer, a list of down-regulated genes were recorded in a time buffer after the administration of the drug. The regulation of the genes were recorded individually but for a majority, it is still not known which higher (≥ 2) order combinations might be playing a greater role in the pathway. RESULTS The pipeline provides a prioritised list of important 2nd order combinations of a range of family of genes involved in the Wnt pathway. More specifically, it reveals the various unexplored FZD-WNT combinations that have been untested till now in the pathway. In relation to ETC-1922159 affected combinations, the down-regulation of LGR-RNF family after the drug treatment is evident in these rankings as it takes bottom priorities for LGR5-RNF43 combination. The LGR6-RNF43 takes higher ranking than LGR5-RNF43, indicating that it might not be playing a greater role as LGR5 during the Wnt enhancing signals. These rankings confirm the efficacy of the proposed search engine design. CONCLUSION A pipeline has been developed to prioritise an nth order combination of factors that affect a signaling pathway. It takes into account the sensitivity indices computed from variance based (SOBOL) and density-kernel based (HSIC) methods to estimate the influence of each factor or combination of factors. These are then fed as feature vectors into a powerful support vector ranking algorithm that produces a ranked list of the interactions/combinations.

THIS BOOK CONSIDERS a complex artistic medium in a complex historical and geographical setting. It is about illuminated Islamic manuscripts produced in the Lands of Rūm between the 1270s and S1370s – a time of profound political fragmentation and frequent outbreaks of violence. In addition to analysing the manuscripts’ visual and physical characteristics, this study considers their production and patronage circumstances and what these may reveal about the wider contemporary artistic, intellectual and cultural context. Most of the fifteen illuminated manuscripts discussed are religious in nature and include Qur’ans and Sufi texts. However, advice literature and historical chronicles also form part of the corpus. All of the manuscripts are dated or dateable, and all are written in either Arabic or Persian. Most were produced in Konya, the former capital of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rūm, although some were copied in other towns, such as Sivas and İstanos (today known as Korkuteli)....

Evangelicalism has long provided American culture with the vocabulary through which to talk about sex and who can appropriately engage in it. This chapter briefly discusses six general presumptions of evangelical thinking about sex, gender, and race inspired by feminist theorist Gayle Rubin; these elements help frame specific excerpts of evangelical marriage and sexual advice literature, which naturalize hypersexual men and their passively sexual women. The chapter discusses the substantial racial subtexts at work in these excerpts that tacitly connect whiteness (and white sexuality, in particular) with moral virtue, and describes how these have become American ideals. To see these ideals at work, a case study compares the scandals of Anita Hill (versus Clarence Thomas) and Paula Jones (versus Bill Clinton). Both Hill and Jones were deemed sexual failures by the American public according to the evangelical standards for female sexuality that were used to define their credibility.
