This article reviews computer-aided engineering software that is used to boost productivity ranges from computer-aided design (CAD) systems to product data management and visualization systems. MacDon Industries used a Solid Edge product to merge CAD and product data management (PDM) systems to give engineers easy access to already created designs. MacDon tracks its tens of thousands of part designs by use of Solid Edge so engineers do not have to spend considerable time searching for the designs. Bayside Automation of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, which makes automated assembly systems on which fuse boxes, valves, and the like are made, has discovered another area where technology—in this case, simulation software—can cut costs and increase productivity. CAD and PDM software from Alibre of Richardson, Texas, help the supplier and manufacturer pass translated design information back and forth quickly.

Product data management (PDM) systems have been successfully applied to maintain product-related information as well as to integrate different applications for design, process and manufacturing throughout the product life cycle. However, the issues on how to use the PDM system to enable design automation have not been adequately addressed. This paper proposed a framework to enable product design automation by employing the web-based PDM system and the Computer-aided Design (CAD) platform. The components of the framework include a feature-based parametric template module, 3D and 2D auto-generation modules, a web-based PDM system, and the data communication protocol between PDM and CAD platform. The features and relations for product families can be defined with the parametric module. 3D and 2D modules help to auto generate the solid and 2D drawings based on the features and relations of the product. The web-based PDM system provides the easy access for designer to create or edit or store the product feature information, and manage the workflow process. The illustrating example demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of this proposed framework for design automation.

Discuss the design of product data management (PDM) system based on Solid Edge Insight: Managed the different user roles by using the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0; Informed file changes to related staff timely by mail server to achieve the collaborative work between different designers that greatly improved design efficiency; Realized online browsing the Solid Edge files and their properties and BOM list via web part provided by the Insight, which made the system more humanized and visualization; Realized document libraries search by using its search view; Introduced the secure sockets layer (SSL) to encrypt network transmission system, which made the system safer and more reliable. Practice results show that this PDM system is able to fulfill the demand of online browsing and managing CAD products or related documents in minor enterprises.

Computer Aided Industrial Design System is a key component of the product digital design platform. It is equally important to control its design process and manage its data and documents effectively to share the data generated in the whole design process. Based on the analysis of the basic functions of the product digital industrial design platform, this paper presents the general model and function frame of product data management system oriented to computer aided industrial design according to its data composition character, integrative method of application software and industrial design flow in the process of computer aided industrial design. In addition, with the industrial design of the pneumatic tools as the object, this paper presents the product data management system to achieve the system integration of computer aided industrial design, 3-D structure design and CAE analysis and the data share.

According to the the characteristic of tower structure and manufacturing property, the tower components are divided into the purchased (CP), the cooperative (CS), the inherit (CL), the key (CK) and so on. In order to ensure the product data integrity, consistency and correctness in chemical tower, different processing rules are adopted to CP, CS, CL, CKin mapping from EBOM(Engineering BOM) to PBOM(Proeess planning BOM). Based on EBOM view in UG, the mapping function from EBOM to PBOM is established to process all BOM data. PBOM view is created accordingly, to achieve computer aided design on BOM in the data management for chemical tower.

A product configurator is a system providing questions and sets of possible answers about products with sets of possible answers. This paper proposes a new idea for a configurator in which information about products are expressed as a structured net of interconnected classes of different types. Classes hold information about assemblies, product structural links, and logical constraints. Some classes have references to technical data on a product data management (PDM) system. Such a system allows flexible representation of knowledge about product configurations for production of aviation equipment. Santrauka Gaminio konfigūratorius yra programinė sistema, pateikianti klausimus apie produktą su galimais pasirinkimų variantais. Šiame darbe pasiūlyta nauja konfigūratoriaus idėja ir pateiktas konfigūracijų aprašo modelis. Šis modelis buvo kuriamas taip, kad juo būtų galima aprašyti realius, dažnai tobulinamus ir sudėtingos sandaros gaminius. Modelyje informacija apie gaminį pateikiama kaip tarpusavyje sujungtų įvairių klasių tinklas. Modelio klasėse saugoma informacija apie gaminio junginius, komponentų ryšius ir loginius apribojimus. Siūlomas konfigūracijų aprašo modelis leidžia lanksčiai perteikti inžinerines žinias apie įvairių gaminių, tarp jų ir aviacijos reikmėms skirtų gaminių, variantus.
