Wire and nonparallel plate electrode-type electrostatic air accelerators have attracted significant interest. The physical process involved in using accelerators is complicated. Moreover, mechanisms are unclear, especially for accelerators with double- and multiwire electrodes. In this study, the two-dimensional (2D) model of a wire–nonparallel plate-type accelerator validated by experiments is established with a finite element method. Onset voltage, average current, and outlet average velocity are analyzed with respect to different parameters. Onset voltage is derived by the proposed quadratic regression extrapolation method. Moreover, current is affected by interference and discharge effects, while velocity is also influenced by the suction effect. For the single-wire electrode, high wind speed can be obtained by either increasing channel slope or placing the wire near the entry section. For the double-wire electrode, velocity can be further increased when one of the wires is placed near the inlet and the distance between the two wires is widened. Comparatively, the velocity of the three-wire electrode is higher with larger gaps between wires and stronger discharge effect. The highest velocity is obtained by the four-wire electrode. Comparisons indicate that higher velocity can be obtained with weaker interference effect, stronger suction effect, and intensified discharge effect. Optimum parameter combinations are considered by the Taguchi method. Consequently, velocity can be enhanced by more than 39% after optimization compared with the reference design.

The three-dimensional viscous flow characteristics and the complex vortex system downstream of the rotor of an industrial exial fan have been determined by an experimental investigation using hot-wire anemometer. Single-wire slanted and straight type probes have been rotated about the probe axis using a computer controlled stepper motor. Measurements have been taken at four planes behind the blade trailing edge. The results show the characteristics of the relative flow as velocity components, secondary flow and kinetic energy defect. Turbulence intensity and Reynolds stress components in the leakage vortex area are also presented. The evolution of the leakage vortex flow during the decay process has also been evaluated in terms of dimension, position and intensity.

In this study, laboratory tests were used to determine the deposition characteristics (runout distance, lateral width, and deposition area) of debris flow and their relationships with the flow characteristics (flow velocity and flow depth) according to the presence of a berm. An experimental flume 1.3 to 1.9 m long, 0.15 m wide, and 0.3 m high was employed to investigate the effects of channel slope and volumetric concentration of sediment with and without the berm. The runout distance (0.201–1.423 m), lateral width (0.045–0.519 m), and deposition area (0.008–0.519 m2) increased as the channel slope increased and as the volumetric concentration of sediment decreased. These quantities also increased with the flow velocity and flow depth. In addition, the maximum reductions in the runout distance, lateral width, and deposition area were 69.1%, 65.9%, and 93%, respectively, upon berm installation. The results of this study illustrate general debris flow characteristics according to berm installation; the reported relationship magnitudes are specific to the experimental conditions described herein. However, the results of this study contribute to the design of site-specific berms in the future by providing data describing the utility and function of berms in mitigating debris flow.
