Abstract A straightforward hydrothermal process followed by a controlled calcination technique is proposed for the synthesis of a Ni(OH)2 modified NiO nanohybrid structure. Conversion materials such as Li-ion battery anodes, NiO in this case, suffer from capacity fade and structural/morphological instability during lithiation and delithiation. The novelty of this work is in utilizing this hybrid configuration to increase the specific capacity and enable reversible electrochemistry. In the present work, we study the lithiation/delithiation process of NiO using a suite of spectroscopy and microscopy techniques from the atomic to electrode scale. We propose a mechanism for a reversible redox couple behavior of the NiO electrode by means of a hybrid Ni(OH)2/NiO structure. The ultimate objective of this work is to guide the development of anode with rationally designed heterogeneity to create high-capacity Li-ion batteries with excellent cycling and rate performance.

AbstractOne-dimensional (1D) α-LiFeO2 nanorods are successfully prepared via a low-temperature solid-state reaction from α-FeOOH nanorods synthesized by hydrothermal process and used as cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries. As cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, the nanorods can achieve a high initial specific capacity of 165.85 mAh/g at 0.1 C for which a high capacity retention of 81.65% can still be obtained after 50 cycles. The excellent performance and cycling stability are attributed to the unique 1D nanostructure, which facilitates the rapid electron exchange and fast lithium-ion diffusion between electrolyte and cathode materials.

Abstract The high-nickel cathode material of LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 (LNCA) has a prospective application for lithium-ion batteries due to the high capacity and low cost. However, the side reaction between the electrolyte and the electrode seriously affects the cycling stability of lithium-ion batteries. In this work, Ni2+ preoxidation and the optimization of calcination temperature were carried out to reduce the cation mixing of LNCA, and solid-phase Al-doping improved the uniformity of element distribution and the orderliness of the layered structure. In addition, the surface of LNCA was homogeneously modified with ZnO coating by a facile wet-chemical route. Compared to the pristine LNCA, the optimized ZnO-coated LNCA showed excellent electrochemical performance with the first discharge-specific capacity of 187.5 mA h g−1, and the capacity retention of 91.3% at 0.2C after 100 cycles. The experiment demonstrated that the improved electrochemical performance of ZnO-coated LNCA is assigned to the surface coating of ZnO which protects LNCA from being corroded by the electrolyte during cycling.

Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3(OH)2, a precursor of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 in new-generation Li-ion batteries, was prepared by a hydroxide coprecipitation method. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) micrographs reveal that the precursor particles thus obtained, show regular shape with uniform size under optimized conditions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicates that well-ordered layer-structured LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 was prepared after calcination at high temperature. The final product exhibited a spherical morphology with uniform size distribution (10 μm in diameter). At the terminal charging voltage of 4.3 and 4.5 V (vs. Li/Li+), the testing cells of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 delivered a specific capacity of 161.2 and 184.1 mAh g-1, respectively. The high capacity retention of 98.0 and 96.1 % after charging to 4.3 and 4.5 V for 50 cycles, respectively, indicates that this material displays excellent cycling stability even at high cut-off voltage.

Novelty Cu2O multi-branched nanowires and nanoparticles with size ranging from [Formula: see text]15[Formula: see text]nm to [Formula: see text]60[Formula: see text]nm have been synthesized by one-step hydrothermal process. These Cu2O nanostructures when used as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries exhibit the excellent electrochemical cycling stability and reduced polarization during the repeated charge/discharge process. The specific capacity of the Cu2O nanoparticles, multi-branched nanowires and microscale are maintained at 201.2[Formula: see text]mAh/g, 259.6[Formula: see text]mAh/g and 127.4[Formula: see text]mAh/g, respectively, under the current density of 0.1[Formula: see text]A/g after 50 cycles. The enhanced electrochemical performance of the Cu2O nanostructures compared with microscale counterpart can be attributed to the larger contact area between active Cu2O nanostructures/electrolyte interface, shorter diffusion length of Li[Formula: see text] within nanostructures and the improved stress release upon lithiation/delithiation.

Abstract Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have been considered to be one of the most promising energy storage devices in the next generation. However, the insulating properties of sulfur and the shuttle effect of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) seriously hinder the practical application of Li-S batteries. In this paper, a novel porous organic polymer (HUT3) was prepared based on the polycondensation between melamine and 1,4-phenylene diisocyanate. The micro morphology of HUT3 was improved by in-situ growth on different mass fractions of rGO (5%, 10%, 15%), and the obtained HUT3-rGO composites were employed as sulfur carriers in Li-S batteries with promoted the sulfur loading ratio and lithium ion mobility. Attributed to the synergistic effect of the chemisorption of polar groups and the physical constraints of HUT3 structure, HUT3-rGO/S electrodes exhibits excellent capacity and cyclability performance. For instance, HUT3-10rGO/S electrode exhibits a high initial specific capacity of 950 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C and retains a high capacity of 707 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 1 C. This work emphasizes the importance of the rational design of the chemical structure and opens up a simple way for the development of cathode materials suitable for high-performance Li-S batteries.

ABSTRACTLi2FeP2O7 is a newly developed polyanionic cathode material for high performance lithium ion batteries. It is considered very attractive due to its large specific capacity, good thermal and chemical stability, and environmental benignity. However, the application of Li2FeP2O7 is limited by its low ionic and electronic conductivities. To overcome the above problem, a solution-based technique was successfully developed to synthesize Li2FeP2O7 powders with very fine and uniform particle size (< 1 μm), achieving much faster kinetics. The obtained Li2FeP2O7 powders were tested in lithium ion batteries by measurements of cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic charge/discharge cycling. We found that the modified Li2FeP2O7 cathode could maintain a relatively high capacity even at fast discharge rates.
