A method is presented for efficiently calculating the damped natural frequencies of complex rotor bearings systems. The procedure is applicable to the repeated reanalysis of rotor systems during the search for an optimal design. The generalized receptances used in the method are calculated with a series of formulas that improves the convergence characteristics when only an incomplete set of modes is available. A nonsynchronous gyroscopic rotor example is examined to illustrate the reanalysis procedure.

Combi-bearing is a combined thrust-journal bearing design used in vertical hydropower rotors. The dynamic characteristics of this component (combi-bearing) were analytically modeled by Luneno et al. (2011, “Model Based Analysis of Coupled Vibrations Due to the Combi-Bearing in Vertical Hydroturbogenerator Rotors,” ASME J. Vib. Acoust., 133, p. 061012). This analytic model was inserted into a finite element model of a vertical rotor rig and numerically simulated. In this paper, the simulated vertical rotor-bearings system is a small-scale vertical machine constructed to validate the analytically derived combi-bearing model. Good agreement was found between the simulation and experimental results. The simulation and experimental results showed that the journal (radial) bearing's position relative to the contact point between the combi-bearing's collar and the rotor influences the rotor system's fundamental natural frequencies. Therefore, the combi-bearing model needs to be included into rotor dynamic models. Neglecting the effect of this component may cause significant errors in the predicted results.

The focus of this literature survey and review is model reduction methods and their application to rotor dynamic systems. Rotor dynamic systems require careful consideration in their dynamic models as they include unsymmetric stiffness, localized nonproportional damping, and frequency-dependent gyroscopic effects. The literature reviewed originates from both controls and mechanical systems analysis and has been previously applied to rotor systems. This survey discusses the previous literature reviews on model reduction, reduction methods applied to rotor systems, the current state of these reduction methods in rotor dynamics, and the ability of the literature to reduce the complexities of large order rotor dynamic systems but allow accurate solutions.

A new quantitative method of estimating steady state periodic behavior in nonlinear systems, based on the trigonometric collocation method, is outlined. A procedure is developed to analyze large rotor dynamic systems with nonlinear supports by the use of the above method in conjunction with Component Mode Synthesis. The algorithm discussed is seen to reduce the original problem to solving nonlinear algebraic equations in terms of only the coordinates associated with the nonlinear supports and is a big improvement over commonly used integration methods. The feasibility and advantages of the procedure so developed are illustrated with the help of an example of a typical rotor dynamic system with an uncentered squeeze film damper. Future work on the investigation of the stability of the periodic response so obtained is outlined.

It has been a well-established fact that dynamic systems in motion experience critical speeds, such as rotating shafts and geared systems whose undeformed reference geometry remain the same at all times. Their critical speeds are determined by their natural frequencies of considered type of free vibrations. Linkage mechanisms as dynamic systems in motion change their undeformed geometries as function of time during the cycle of kinematic motion. They do also experience critical operating speeds as rotating shafts and geared systems do, and their critical speeds are determined by the minima of their natural frequencies during a cycle of kinematic motion. Such a minimum occurs at the critical geometry of a mechanism, which is the position at which the maximum of the input power is required to maintain the instantaneous dynamic equilibrium of the mechanism. Actual finite line elements are used to form the global generalized coordinate flexibility matrix. The natural frequencies of the mechanism and the corresponding mode vectors (mode deflections) are determined as the eigen values and eigen vectors of the equations of instantaneous-position-free-motion of the mechanism. Method is formulated to include or exclude the link axial deformations, and apply to any number of loops having any type of planar pair. Critical speeds of planar four-bar, slider-crank, and Stephenson’s six-bar mechanisms are determined. Experimental results for the four-bar mechanism are given. Effect of axial deformations and link rotary inertias are investigated. Inclusion of link axial deformations in mechanisms having pairs with sliding freedoms is seen to predict critical speeds with large error.

Abstract Modern turbomachinery is used to provide power for a wide range of applications, from steam turbines for electrical power plants to the turbopumps used in the Space Shuttle Main Engine. Such devices are subject to a variety of dynamical problems, including vibration, rotordynamical instability, and shaft whirl. In order to properly design and evaluate the performance and stability of turbomachinery, It is important that appropriate analytical tools be available that allow for the study of potentially important dynamical effects. This research effort is concerned with developing a procedure to account for disk flexibility which can readily be used for investigating how such effects might influence the natural frequencies and critical speeds of practical rotor systems. In the present work, a transfer matrix procedure is developed in which the disk flexibility effects are accounted for by means of additional terms included in the transfer matrix formulation. In this development, the shaft is treated as a discrete system while the disk is modelled as a continuous system using the governing partial differential equation. Based on this governing equation, an equivalent inertial moment Mk*, which is the generalized dynamic force coupling between shaft and disk, is then derived. Analysis shows that only the disk modes of one nodal diameter contribute to the inertial moment, Mk*, and thus influence the natural frequencies of the rotor system. To determine the Mk*, the modal expansion method is employed and the governing partial differential equation of the disk is transformed to a set of decoupled forced vibration equations in the generalized coordinates. The Mk* are then calculated in terms of modal shapes, natural frequencies, and material and geometric parameters which can be found in the literature or can be obtained from experiments. Finally the Mk* are incorporated into the point transfer matrix. By so doing, the properties of quick computational speed and ease of use are retained and the complexity of solving partial differential equations is avoided. This allows the present procedure to be easily applied to practical engineering problems. This is especially true for multiple flexible disk rotor systems. As an example, three different cases for a simplified model of the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) High Pressure Oxygen Turbo-Pump (HPOTP) rotor have been studied using this procedure. Some of the more interesting results obtained in this example study are enumerated below. 1.) Disk flexibility can introduce additional natural frequency(s) to a rotor system. 2.) Disk flexibility can cause shifting of some of the natural frequencies. 3.) As disk flexibility is increased, lower natural frequencies of the rotor system will be influenced. 4.) At certain rotor speeds, disk flexibility may cause the disappearance of a natural frequency. 5.) The axial position of the disk on the rotor shaft has a significant effect on the degree of this influence.

Abstract This paper presents the development of two tapered finite elements for use in torsional vibration analysis of rotor systems. These elements are particularly useful in analysis of systems that have shaft sections with linearly varying diameters. Both elements are defined by two end nodes, and inertia matrices are derived based on a consistent mass formulation. One element assumes a cubic displacement function and has two degrees of freedom at each node: rotation about the shaft’s axis and change in angle of rotation with respect to the axial distance along the shaft. The other element assumes a linear displacement function and has one rotational degree of freedom at each node. The elements are implemented in a computer program. Calculated natural frequencies and mode shapes are compared for both tapered shaft sections and constant diameter sections. These results are compared with results from an available constant diameter element. It is shown that the element derived assuming a cubic displacement function offers much better convergence characteristics in terms of calculated natural frequencies, both for tapered sections and constant diameter sections, than either of the other two elements. The finite element code that was developed for implementation of these elements is specifically designed for torsional vibration analysis of rotor systems. Lumped inertia, lumped stiffness, and gear connection elements necessary for rotor system analysis are also discussed, as well as calculation of natural frequencies, mode shapes, and amplitudes of response due to a harmonic torque input.
