Few-mode erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (FM-EDFAs) are one of the most important optical subsystems for successful space division multiplexed transmission systems. In this paper, we propose a new FM-EDFA designed to achieve significantly reduced differential modal gain (DMG) via strong mode coupling. Using a new numerical model based on a fiber transfer matrix, the DMGs of FM-EDFAs are systematically investigated and two different types of six-mode fiber amplifiers are analyzed, as exemplar demonstrations. In a uniformly doped step-index fiber, the DMG can be reduced from 9.3 to 1.1 dB (i.e., 8.2 dB reduction) and further reduced to 0.5 dB in a dual-layer doping structure.

The work approaches new theoretical and experimental studies in the elastic characterization of materials, based on the properties of the intrinsic transfer matrix. The term ‘intrinsic transfer matrix’ was firstly introduced by us in order to characterize the system in standing wave case, when the stationary wave is confined inside the sample. An important property of the intrinsic transfer matrix is that at resonance, and in absence of attenuation, the eigenvalues are real. This property underlies a numerical method which permits to find the phase velocity for the longitudinal wave in a sample. This modal approach is a numerical method which takes into account the eigenvalues, which are analytically estimated for simple elastic systems. Such elastic systems are characterized by a simple distribution of eigenmodes, which may be easily highlighted by experiment. The paper generalizes the intrinsic transfer matrix method by including the attenuation and a study of the influence of inhomogeneity. The condition for real eigenvalues in that case shows that the frequencies of eigenmodes are not affected by attenuation. For the influence of inhomogeneity, we consider a case when the sound speed is varying along the layer’s length in the medium of interest, with an accompanying dispersion. The paper also studies the accuracy of the method in estimating the wave velocity and determines an optimal experimental setup in order to reduce the influence of frequency errors.

Abstract An exact analytical model of charge dynamics for a chain of atoms with asymmetric hopping terms is presented. Analytic and numeric results are shown to give rise to similar dynamics in both the absence and presence of electron interactions. The chain model is further extended to the case of two atoms per cell (a perfect alloy system). This extension is further applied to contact electrification between two different atomic chains and the effect of increasing the magnitude of the contact transfer matrix element is studied.

Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) is prevalent in aircraft hydraulic pipes due to high-pressure fluid pulsation, complex pipe path routing and boundary constraints, which pose a serious threat to the safety and reliability of the aircraft hydraulic system. This paper focuses on the FSI response of aircraft hydraulic pipes with complex constraints. A comprehensive fourteen-equation model for describing the FSI of pipe conveying fluid with wide pressure and Reynolds number range is proposed. The excitation models and complex boundary constraints of liquid-filled pipes are established. Moreover, based on the transfer matrix method (TMM), combined with the time discreteness and analytical integral method, a discrete time transfer matrix method (DTTMM) for solving the FSI fourteen-equation model in time domain is presented. Then, the numerical solution and experiment of an ARJ21-700 aircraft hydraulic pipe with complex constraints is carried out with four working conditions. The obtained results verify the correctness of the proposed model and solution method, and reveal the universal laws of the FSI response about aircraft hydraulic pipes, which can also provide theoretical and experimental references for modeling, solutions and verification in the FSI analysis of pipe conveying fluid.
